Hairstyle to flatter a long thin middle-aged face?

Just what the title says really: any suggestions on what hair style would suit a middle-aged long thin gaunt face? My hair is below shoulder length, a non-descript long layered style (if you can call it that) that I've had for years. I feel it probably drags my already sagging face down and tbh I'm bored with it.

Hair is very thick (and coarse) and neither properly straight nor properly wavy, given to mushroom tendencies if it's all one length and sticks up like a scrubbing brush if cut very short Confused

I'm due a cut and it'd be great to go into the hairdresser's with a clue about what I want. TIA for any ideas Thanks

I just had my shoulder length, very straight, limp hair cut into a layered bob at chin length. My face no longer looks long and gaunt and I have had so many lovely complements about how much the cut suits me.

Get thee to a decent hairdresser, that is the most important thing.

Agree a bit shorter would be more flattering.

I have a very similar face shape and hair type; long thin face, thick (less so these days) hair that has a nondescript wave when it's in the mood. Had it cut short once and was utterly awful, hair stood up like a bog brush and the 'wave thing' became far more pronounced, generally in the opposite direction to the one intended!
So these days I have a long layered bob, stops a chin level at the front and graduates to just touching shoulders, can bung hot rollers in if I can be bothered.

Thanks for the ideas - I'm thinking a layered longish bob with a side swept fringe sort of look. Teawithlemon - I had the unruly bog brush too when I went short ... I swore never to have short hair again after that (spent a fortune on industrial strength gel to glue it down Grin). Like the idea of heated rollers to get a bit more width going on Smile

I don't know. I can't decide for myself! I have a long thin face, and had it cut into a chin-length bob, which is supposed to suit my face shape, a couple of years ago.

But then I got bored and grew it out, so it is now straight and shoulder length. Probably totally wrong for my face now.....

I would recommend a fringe, though.

What I don't want is one of those round bouffanty bobs Shock

Good point about the fringe - I also have a cow's lick at the front so I can't have a proper 'Winkleman' fringe but I think a side swept one will work!
