Has anyone grown their hair long as an adult?

I've had a short bob for years and want to try long hair again, for one last time before I am too old to pass it off!

But it seems to be taking forEVER! I have only had it trimmed twice in a year and it's still only sitting around my shoulders, not even long enough to flick back and rest over the back while I brush my teeth etc.

Someone tell me how long it too them to get to about breast length? And is there a good way to style it when it's at that awkward in-between style?

I'm 49 and my hair grows fairly quickly. I had it cut to about chin length (it is curly though) last May and then didn't have it cut at all for a year and it had grown to about breast length. Just had it cut to chin length again, as I was tieing it back all the time for work anyway.

I'm not an expert on styling, hopefully someone else will come along with advice.

I had a short bob for a few years and decided to start growing it out in late 2012. I have decent, thick, straight hair but it has never seemed to grow so quickly since I had kids (dont know if thats hormonal, age etc...but definitely noticed it).

18 months later it is breast length. I have had it trimmed every 3 months or so and some layers cut in during that time. I want it a few inches longer, too...impatient!!

My new hairdresser was telling me she gets people's hair to grow long that usually can't by cutting off a lot less than your average hair dresser but regularly.
She literally cuts off a centimetre.

revolutionarytoad · 30/05/2014 12:09

Maybe you should concentrate on taking good care of your scalp? Not saying it's not fine at the moment, but it's something to think about. Something to do with follicles getting clogged up and the hair shaft getting minituarised and stuff.....
You could try a clarifying shampoo, vitamins....

My hair grows at an exasperating rate and I wish I could slow it down. I hate getting it cut by someone else and it's permanently wonky cos I trim it myself so much!

VenusDeWillendorf · 30/05/2014 12:12

What age are you OP.
Sometimes hair growth slows as we age- dependant on your hormones.

That's why long luscious hair is an indicator of youth and fertility.

Are you talking multi minerals and vitamins? Eating a bit more protein may help too.

Youdontneedacriminallawyer · 30/05/2014 12:18

Bodicea with all due respect, that's rubbish. Think about it logically. Your hair grows from the root, cutting the ends will make no difference to how quickly it grows.

mumster79 · 30/05/2014 12:21

Same here! I'm 34 and am trying to grow my hair. Pah! Nearly ready to give up and go short again. The grim inbetween stage is grating!

Mynewone · 30/05/2014 12:30

I grew mine from just above shoulder length to long (halfway down my back now) when I was late 20's. I had regular trims- literally the very very ends every 8 weeks and I deep conditioned it every month or so

BranchingOut · 30/05/2014 12:32

I think that hair also has an optimum natural length - mine never really gets past a certain point on my shoulders before the ends keep getting frazzled.

HeyBungalowBill · 30/05/2014 12:35

I've got a pixie cut and I've just started to grow it now, I'm dreading every stage until it had grown longer than my shoulders Grin

My hair looks awful already, I keep being tempted to cut it all off again but I want long hair again! Sad

VenusDeWillendorf · 30/05/2014 12:42

Hair grows for three months then rests for three months, and then it may fall out.

If your hair grows quickly and is thick on your head you're going to be able to grow it long presuming you have all the nutrition available for the follicle, and enough growth hormone, and depending if your testosterone isn't hydrotestosterone (this will cause male pattern balding)

If your hair never gets longer than shoulder length before it goes all wispy you'll never be able to grow it long, sorry, as it's not growing enough in its three month growing cycle, and the hair is too fine and weak, and keeps breaking.

Regular trims may help this wispy hair to LOOK longer, as it's not all straggly, but it's an optical illusion, as the hair isn't actually longer, the edge is just more defined and looks stronger than a wispy one.

If you really want to grow your hair long, don't get it cut and treat it nicely when it's wet, so it doesn't break. Take multi minerals and vitamins, up your protein intake, take testosterone in HRT if you're menopausal.

But the most important thing is not to get it cut if you want to grow it!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 30/05/2014 12:55

before I am too old to pass it off!

If you want long hair, at any age, grow it. I say bollocks to all these rules about what women are 'allowed' to be and look like at certain ages.

MyrtleDove · 30/05/2014 13:18

Until I had it all chopped off, mine was past my bra strap. I can get it to waist-length. It's very thick though and it's just far too hot in the summer, so had it cut to just above chin length.

Bodicea · 30/05/2014 19:50

It's not rubbish. It won't make it grow any faster I know. But it stops the split ends in their tracks. The reason most people can't grow their hair is they leave it too long between cuts and it starts getting scraggy so the have to lob a load off.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 30/05/2014 23:37

I've got long hair at the moment and have had all lengths from short bob to almost waist over my adult years. I'm 43 and haven't noticed any difference in growth or healthiness... I do worry about getting too old for long hair but so far I think I'm still ok.

Coumarin · 31/05/2014 02:56

Early 30's. Mine is bra strap length at the mo and takes about two months to grow an inch and a half. I take vitamins and eat a lot of protein which I think has made it stronger and thicker but doesn't effect growth rate.

I was actually contemplating chopping a couple of inches off. It's very thick so tends to hang heavily. Not sure it's that flattering anymore tbh.

I wouldn't get it cut short yet though.

Coumarin · 31/05/2014 02:58

By 'growth rate' I mean length wise. It definitely grows thicker when I eat right.

SecretWitch · 31/05/2014 03:19

I am 49 and have long hair. It has been long since I was 40. I get a tiny trim every three months, eat a good amount of protein and take a boatload of Biotin. I feel lucky to have thick auburn hair. I won't cut it until I decided it suits me.

Hazchem · 31/05/2014 03:49

I've been growing mine for about 12 months. It was mid length before. It finally got a length I like but the condition was so shit I had to cut loads off. I think I will aim to get a trim every 4 months rather then every 8 months and see how I go. It does require more care and I'm not sure how to sleep with long hair. It kept getting trapped by my head, shoulder or in my armpit!

burnishedsilver · 31/05/2014 08:07

I think hair and nail vitamins help. My gp recommended that I take selium because my hair was falling out. My hair was lovely after it and it seems to grow faster.

Melonbreath · 31/05/2014 08:09

Mine is tit length right now, this time last year it was just bouncing on my shoulders and i had a fair few cuts to keep it that way. My hair grows fast but it needs a Damned good chopping now

SquidgyMummy · 31/05/2014 08:49

That selenium tip is great. I had elbow length hair when I was 40 - boosted by pregnancy (has been longish since my late 20's). In january, I cut it into a chin length angled bob, as I was sick of constantly tying it back. got lots of compliments, but it didn't feel like "me", so am currently growing it back to at least shoulder length.

After that I can leave it, I usually only had it cut twice a year when long.

only downside is the gray hair coming through - don't want to look too "witchy" - had the roots done for the first time last week - but will probably have to resort to doing it at home, once hair is long....

mumster79 · 31/05/2014 10:52

Sod it - gave up and chopped it all off today!

Coumarin · 31/05/2014 12:47

Good tip Burnished Mine fell out after ivf. I wish I'd known that then. It grew back grey thank goodness but it was worrying at the time.

Thanks
Coumarin · 31/05/2014 12:48

Do you like it Mumster ? How short have you gone?
