Why is my moisturiser not moisturising?!

Jemster · 29/05/2014 07:00

I have bought so many face moisturisers and none of them actually make my skin look and feel moisturised. My face feels dry and tight even when I've just put the cream on. The worst bit is my forehead, dry and the lines are setting in.
I'm 38 and when I look at other people my age they seem to have fresh looking moisturised glowy skin.
Why don't any of these creams work? I've wasted so much money. Any advice appreciated thanks.

Have you tried Avene?
Do you wash your face first with warm water so the moisturiser can sink in better?

Jemster · 29/05/2014 07:06

No not tried that one. I started using the hot cloth method a couple of months ago but my face got sore and lots of spots. Not sure if it was from the hot water, the flannel or the clinique cream cleanser but I had to stop. Now I just splash with lukewarm water.

I had that issue. The more moisturiser I used, the more it did nothing.

I eventually spoke to the Clinique lady who recommended their three step stuff for dry skin. Said the toner would remove the dead skin and let the moisturiser sink in. What a load of crap thought I but spent twenty on the starter pack...

Well it worked!!! Baby soft skin again. I DO NOT work for Clinique.

I'm kind of pissed off it worked as I prefer more natural products and the toner smells like paint stripper. But when I stop using it the dull, dry skin returns! It's only the stuff for dry skin that works for me btw.

Jemster · 29/05/2014 07:18

So do you wash with water before using the clinique 3 step?

OP posts:
oohdaddypig · 29/05/2014 07:41

Nope - although I remove makeup first with a basic body shop make up remover

I love La Roche Posay Cicaplast
It's soothing and has a luxurious feel but my skin absorbs it quickly. It makes my skin feel lovely and soft.

PinkandTwinkly · 29/05/2014 08:57

Do you exfoliate?

I have dry skin and unless it's well exfoliated my moisturises aren't effective.

Also, possibly your using a too heavy cream, and it's not soaking in. My skin is dehydrated and get better effects with a lighter cream amd serum.

thepurplepenguin · 29/05/2014 09:08

2 things that work for me

Eucerin cream. Very unglam but makes my skin soft. Not glowy though.

For glowy I need Clarins Hydraquench for normal to dry skin. It is expensive but is the only thing that works like that for me.

This is great. I think it's the hyaluronic acid stuff that makes it so good. I do also use hydraluron underneath which makes a difference

Try to drink more water, dry and dehydrated skin look similar, but if your moisturizer doesn't sinks into the skin, you need more water.

There was a similar thread the other week. I posted a link to this.

It is the best moisturiser ever. And so cheap compared to Elemis etc.

Read the reviews.

squoosh · 29/05/2014 11:36

You need to figure out your skin type. If it's lacking oil (dry), lacking water (dehydrated) or both. Mine is both dry and dehydrated but some people's can be oily and dehydrated.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/05/2014 17:16

Eucerin 10% eurea.

fuckinglondonballs · 29/05/2014 17:26

As mentioned above try using an exfoliating toner. Every morning I use one by Ren, then an eye cream, then vitamin C serum, then Hydraluron, then Estée Lauder moisturiser.

In the evening I use a face oil or a more intensive serum and then a moisturiser.

Perhaps try some new products, like serums and oils, rather than cream based moisturisers.
