Redheads and grey hair..

Is it right that red hair goes grey a lot later in life? I've been colouring my (natural) red hair for a while. Weirdly the roots are coming through so light now that I'm almost strawberry blonde Shock
Was bright almost fluorescent orange when I was younger but it's looking lighter and lighter Confused

I think I agree with the veins to some extent - but only on one arm! My left arm is a definite "fuck off with that needle it's getting nothing out of me" but my right arm usually lets them have some. Grin

Mine are both crap. One doctor said "do you actually have any blood. Or veins?"

Yep the phlebotomists are the only ones who manage to get mine too, I've had some determined to get it and ended up with a massive bruise, some are more considerate and don't like to try more than twice.

Don't know about the pain threshold, both of my labours I didn't have pain relief aside from gas and air and coped OK yet I could squeel in pain if I hurt my toe...Hmm

Yes, I've been sent home when surgery nurses couldn't get blood from me. I just go and wait to be seen at the hospital unit now, they never fail and are much quicker (even if it is sometimes a longer wait.) If it's not a fasting test i buy a coffee from the cafe on the way in. Seems to help the circulation a bit!

another red head here.

When I was younger it was very orange and has lightened over the years to a strawberry blond. Some of my underneath hair is quite orange still though.

I highlight it blonder now just because it's very short and adds some texture.

I'm 43 and still no sign of any grey hairs but my roots don't show very much at all so I think it's just fading gradually.

blood - I have collapsing veins so quite difficult to get blood from me and I also heal very quickly which can be a pain as i've twice had problems with stitches because of quicker than normal healing.

Pain - I have no idea about pain threshold. How do you know if yours is high or low. I think mine is low but I only took paracetamol for 5 days after a c-section so I don't know.

cold - i am ALWAYS cold, always. It's May and I'm still wearing bed socks at night otherwise my feet are cold enough to keep me awake.

My Gran still had a touch of her original red hair when she was in her 90s. It looked lovely.

CoconutAmericano · 29/05/2014 16:40

im a red read too! getting loads of white hair in the front now. I've been getting it blended in the hair dressers for a few months now but even though its permanent colour it still washes away. can anyone recommend me a permanent box colour i could try? my hair is strawberry blonde to orange in colour. you'd never miss me in a crowd put it that way!
oh and i am always cold too. always.

rightsaidthread i hadnt actually considered henna. I might talk to someone in lush tomorrow, ill be in town. I dont know anything about it really other than it's a natural dye, but i do have a vague memory of my mam using it in the 80's. I remember the smell!

Ive just seen some tutorials online. Man oh man it's a big job!! But i think i will still try it tomorrow night. The lich caca rouge looks fab. I might stand in the bath until i have it all wrapped up on my head in cling film.

DMILs was still pepper and salt white and ginger when she died (age 77), but she was wonderfully eccentric and I suspect it got a bit of henna washed through it now and then.

She'd never have said, because she wore ancient clothes and wouldn't have admitted to such vanities.

grumblepuss · 29/05/2014 20:30

Red hair doesn't normally go grey as it doesn't have the pigments to go grey.
My grandad didn't go grey, he just faded. I expect I'll do the same.

I'm another who struggles to give blood, one arm is ok, the other is rubbish.

Lilbup · 30/05/2014 07:31

I had red hair as a child which has got darker as I've got older so that people tell me it now looks brown. I've been getting white hairs since my late 20s around my temples. I also feel the cold and am impossible to get blood out of.

CoconutAmericano · 30/05/2014 17:32

Well the caca rouge henna is in! What a faff that was, and I'm not even sure i got the whole head. Im worried it's going to be patchy but i think i can just buy another bar tomorrow and do the bits I've missed. So I'm feeling worried and excited at the same time! Plan to wash it off at 9 pm gulp

I used the whole block rightsaidthread on the advice of the lovely lush lady. I have really thick hair. It's starting to get heavy now!

CoconutAmericano · 30/05/2014 20:53

Well i washed it off a tad earlier than planned due to the weight of it! I love it! It turned out great and it is even thank god. It's very very bright (think florence and the machine) but i think i can carry it off! Grin. Thank you rightsaidthread for suggesting it.
