DH looks like a bag of washing on holiday...

BagOWashing · 28/05/2014 22:31

Just need suggestions really. Please.

We have had lots of casual holidays abroad when DC was small. We stayed in private villas and never really ventured out in the evenings.

This year we are are going to a lovely hotel with a 'long trousers' dress code for gents.

DH's current evening wear consists of 3/4 length trousers, t-shirts with fading logos of previous holiday destinations or chinos with 'work shirts' albeit undone at the collar.

He is happy to revamp his holiday wardrobe but I don't quite know where to start. Holiday destination will be hot so cool, casual(ish) and stylish trousers and tops??? Any suggestions for shoes?

Boat shoes

In leather they are smart enough for evening

DippyEggNSolders · 28/05/2014 22:34

Can he wear smart shorts? Dp got some lovely ones from French Connection and Tommy Hilfigure about 3 years ago, still smart now and were worn on evenings at a posh hotel we went to.

ginmakesitallok · 28/05/2014 22:35

Boat shoes? Only if he's in his 70s, though I don't have any other suggestions....

LaurieFairyCake · 28/05/2014 22:38

Both french connection and tommy hillfigger do boat shoes Grin - most common men's summer shoe

BagOWashing · 28/05/2014 22:49

Boat shoes might be a possibility, I will have a look, thank you.

But what about trousers and tops (I suspect his chinos and greying Metallica tee-shirts aren't going to do it!). Has to be long trousers rather than shorts I'm afraid.

He's in his 50's by the way so perhaps not too trendy?

Chinos are good but up to date ones - not ones baggy with turnups at the bottom - I think the current look for chino types is narrower leg while avoiding the skinny jean look

A short sleeve shirt would be better than a t shirt, linens a hit in a nice colour . I think long sleeved is really quite formal unless you're staying at Raffles.

Passthecake30 · 29/05/2014 07:46

Beige or grey chinos and checked waffle type shirts and boat shoes would be dps choice

What about m&s and next?

notnowImreading · 29/05/2014 07:50

Watch Mamma Mia. Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth both have nice holiday clothes in that, although less nice singing voices. Don't model him on the other one!

Artandco · 29/05/2014 07:55

Tan or navy chinos
Few casual linen or cotton shirts ( long sleeve, look casual if open at top, can smarten if needed and stop insect bites)
Moccasin shoes ie tods as an example
Few Plainish t shirts. Look better than loads I logos and prints

MissScatterbrain · 29/05/2014 08:19

Slim chinos & short sleeved cotton shirts (checked/plain) - much more flattering than t shirts and 3/4 trousers.

Bonsoir · 29/05/2014 08:21

Go to somewhere like Aigle/Gant/Lacoste and buy polo shirts and long trousers. Do not buy boat shoes (not at all suitable for a restaurant that requires long trousers).

QueenQueenie · 29/05/2014 08:57

Does he not have his own ideas about what sort of clothes he wants to wear /are appropriate? Is he a toddler in a grown man's body? Why does he need his dwife to take charge of his wardrobe?
I really couldn't be doing with a partner who is either so hopeless or so wiling to be infantilised. Yuk.
And STEP AWAY from the "boat shoes"! Also Yuk.

Artandco · 29/05/2014 09:56

Bonsoir - why not boat shoes? These are what I call boat shoes and I think go nice with a pair of fitted chinos and long sleeve white linen shirt for example

carrie74 · 29/05/2014 12:23

H is younger, but he would wear chinos or jeans (Boden has been a hit for this), fitted polo tops (he favours A&F/Hollister or Superdry as they fit him well) or check shirts with rolled up sleeves (A&F again - good fit). I actually think Boden have nailed this look fairly well. I like boat shoes/driving shoes for casual summer wear as well (seems split opinion on this!).

Bonsoir · 29/05/2014 14:19

Those are car shoes not boat shoes!

MrsMillions · 29/05/2014 14:45

Is it the sort of place where restaurants are likely to have air conditioning turned up to the max? (Always annoys me as makes the food cold.) If so long sleeved shirts that he has the option of rolling the sleeves up on would be a good choice.

DH has slim fit chinos from Gap in a couple of colours. They work well for him on hols.

specialsubject · 29/05/2014 15:15

'a bag of washing???' Hope he isn't reading this!

careful with deck/boat shoes. They have no grip, are really hot and tear your feet to ribbons. And yes, it was an expensive pair as part of a uniform. Terrible things.

Decent flip flops and clean toenails. Presumably you don't want to go all the way somewhere hot and then be stuck indoors in ghastly aircon, so he'll need to dress for the heat.

and a loose cool cotton shirt. Perfect.

John Lewis & Co is a fantastic brand, we've found dh lots of clothes that look age appropriate - no brand logos and smart casual rather than scruffy white stuff. Would get desert boot style shoes. Jigsaw for men is also lovely, sale section is worth looking at.
Boat shoes are my shoe hell!

Artandco · 29/05/2014 16:31

Bonsoir - true it says in website, but in selfridges yesterday they label the same ones as boat shoes. Either way they are they type I meant

sourdrawers · 29/05/2014 17:31

I loooooove men in nice linen trousers (navy blue), and shirts, oh and Camper sandals.

Msvenus · 29/05/2014 21:35

a trip to the John Lewis stylist might be helpful, they could put together a capsule holiday smart / casual wardrobe which will save money on expensive mistakes.

Thank you for all of the suggestions, I needed a bit of inspiration and some ideas. Going to start looking for slim chinos and some nice shirts.

Honestly, DH isn't hopeless - he's just not that interested in clothes. The rest of the year he dresses pretty smartly but has accumulated a very, very casual/comfortable collection of 'go to' holiday clothes that were fine in the past but won't work this year Grin

Passthecake30 · 30/05/2014 19:22

Sounds like my dp...though as a builder never looks smart, he's either in filthy building clothes or his clothes he's accumulated over the last 10 yrs, and he is uninterested in clothes I would have to dress him for such a holiday tbh.

Good luck!
