The new no7 serum

I'm thinking of trying the new advanced protect and perfect serum after reading some very good reviews but I've seen there is the "normal" advanced serum and an "Intense" version. Does anyone know what the difference is and how do I know which I should get? Thanks

The last one brought me out in a rash. I have never had a rash before. I am quite old.

jenniuol · 28/05/2014 21:47

I think the normal one is for ages 25-35 and the advanced/intense one is for 35+. I've never tried protect and perfect before but I bought a tube of the new one last week. I'm 26 so got the normal one. Seems fine so far but I don't actually have any lines or wrinkles, so not sure what I'm actually waiting for it to do Confused

jenniuol · 28/05/2014 21:48

There's a £5 off voucher just now too so I wouldn't buy it without that.

Wenchelda · 28/05/2014 22:03

Hmm I'm 35 next week so I guess I need the intense version, lol Hmm

I've been using the Intense one and like it. It hasn't visibly improved lines/wrinkles but I think my skin tone is very slightly better. I didn't use the last version as I didn't like the texture but this is much nicer.

An alternative is the new updated Olay Regenerist Super Serum. I think for drugstore serums you probably won't do better than these two.

Wenchelda · 29/05/2014 09:33

Thanks - I might look at the olay one too then .... My mum used to use oil of Olay but I've never tried it myself. I tried the original protect and perfect when it first came out and didn't like it (seemed to make my face sting a bit if I remember rightly) so not sure if the new one would be the same. Can you get samples of them, does anyone know?

L'oreal youth code is the same formulation as Lancôme Genefique

FluffyDucky · 29/05/2014 13:31

The Intense is aimed at 35-45 & deeper lines. It has got hyaluronic acid in it plus the Matrixyl 3000 Plus. The P&P has salicylic acid in it plus the Matrixyl 3000 Plus.
Go by your lines. If they are not too bad, go for P&P. You can ask for samples! Just bear in mind you are not going to get a massive amount, so you probs won't see a big difference with the sample.

None of these products actually remove wrinkles, you know.
If they did everyone would be unlined.
At best they plump up the surface for as long as you use them and if they contain high amounts of retinol or retinol derivatives they might help resurface a little bit but they'd then be classed as medication/drugs and not cosmetics.

tak1ngchances · 29/05/2014 14:10

That's true lazysummer. It's mostly about genetics isn't it, and then you can influence things somewhat with lifestyle factors - most importantly limiting sun exposure, wearing SPF every day and not smoking.

But the products, as you say, can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles while you are using them. Which is something!

Lazysummerdays · 29/05/2014 14:40

TBH lifestyle can take 10 or more years off you in the long run if you use sunblock daily, don't smoke, don't drink, eat fresh healthy food, keep your weight down to avoid the heavy jowly look, and get plenty of Omega 3 oils and good fats.

Captainbarnacles1101 · 29/05/2014 14:43

I'm 39 and I bought the intense one. As someone up thread said it didn't help with the wrinkles (I don't have many) but it made a noticeable difference to my complexion. It's brighter and my skin looks smoother. I'd defo give it a go. X

Justgotosleepnow · 29/05/2014 14:46

Please wear SPF in top if you use these creams in the daytime! Or you will get sun damage. Best to use them overnight instead.

Lazysummerdays · 29/05/2014 15:26

I think they have a smoothing effect and also a slight exfoliation effect which might work for some but can also be irritating.

It's not actually wrinkles that make people look old IMHO-it's uncared for skin, pigmentation, sagging and several chins. Almost all of these are down to lifestyle ( sun exposure) and weight.

Sugar is one of the biggest skin destroyers as it causes inflammation which breaks down collagen which supports the deep layers of skin.

Scarletohello · 29/05/2014 18:55

Slightly off the point but I really hate the ad for this! I find it really patronising and has actually put me off buying it. The only thing I have ever noticed making a real difference to my skin ( to the extent that people actually commented on it), was when a few years ago I was doing the Atkins diet, so eating lots of fat and my skin actually did glow! It's strange how we put oils and butter ON our skin but don't want to eat it!

merlotguzzler · 29/05/2014 20:59

Scarlet me too! It's bloody awful! How do you remove ALL mirrors from your life for a month?! It actually probably would have put me off buying it too, but I bought it before I saw it.

I have to say though, I'm really impressed. It took 2 weeks maybe before I could tell a difference, but when I did notice, there was quite a big difference. Not sure what really. I just look better. I'm 30, so don't have loads of lines and wrinkles, but the ones I have, I think do look a little softer.

I posted on style and beauty the other day, but think I came across as smug Grin

merlotguzzler · 29/05/2014 21:02

Hadn't actually finished....

Anyway, I got IDed for the first time in nearly 2 years 2 weeks after I started using it, so that's enough proof for me that somethings working.

Scarletohello · 29/05/2014 21:28

Oh I so want to believe but there's so much snake oil out there and I have never found anything that makes a difference. However I am lucky enough to have inherited good genes so look a lot younger than many of my friends the same age. ( sometimes feel a bit like the Portrait of Dorian Grey, there must be a hideous portrait of me in an attic somewhere!)

Advice to younger ladies - stay out of the sun!
