If you have very fine, poker straight hair...

What style do you usually have it in? I'm thinking of having a restyle next week but I always have the same problem:

Too short (ie above my shoulders/collar) and it makes my face look fuller, and needs styling every day with straighteners or my Babyliss Big Hair. I don't have time for this with two young dc.

Too long and it looks straggly.

Anyone else in the same boat? It's highlighted blonde, and I'm mid thirties if that makes any difference.

I really fancy a change but something which is low-maintenance.

I have a super short bob - as in Louise Brooks short. My hair just falls that way so although I do have to dry I it for some volume , I can just leave it to dry by itself and it hangs well. Have tried many many hairstyles but this works best for me.

SlinkyB · 27/05/2014 17:50

Ah. I'm guessing you're slim then Pands? And have a fringe? I'm a size 16, and haven't had a fringe in 15 years as the last one was such a disaster.

I have super fine hair that is poker straight and recently noticed my bob was looking thin and straggly. Probably an age thing Sad

SO I've had it cut into a short crop- think Jamie Lee Curtis or Annie Lennox. My hair looks much thicker and it only takes a few minutes to dry and style. Very liberating!

Hiya slinky

I have a Pob, no fringe, side parting, trim evey month to keep it sharp

TheTerribleBaroness · 27/05/2014 17:57

Mine is long and I usually wear it up in a bun on top if my head. It's elegant, makes you look taller and slimmer, and stays tidy all day. Also good if you haven't had time to wash it. Wink Get a donut and give it a go.

Sometimes I plait it or wear it in a ponytail or to one side. It's really very versatile.

SlinkyB · 27/05/2014 19:28

Katie sympathies, my youngest is 4mo and my hair has been falling out in clumps these past few weeks Sad

Forgettable a trim every month?! Shock You've just reminded me why I've probably not had short hair in a long while; I can just about afford/find time to go every 10-12 weeks. My hairdresser lives 30 mins drive away and I have to find childcare for two dc's.

A side parting might be do-able and easy, thanks for that tip. Not sure I can do a pob as my shortest front layer is at my jaw.

Baroness I've never tried a donut, but my 11yr old niece has one I could try ! When I have my hair in a pony tail though, I always get those whispy bits of hair all round the hairline and the back of my neck. Sigh.

One-length bob somewhere between chin and shoulder length. It's too fine to hold layers and if it gets any longer than shoulder length it turns into Split End City.

When I was younger and thinner I flirted with a pixie cut which was great at the time but wouldn't work these days.

WildBill · 27/05/2014 19:44

Hair is fine and dead straight - I have it slightly below shoulders with long layers, no fringe but a little shaping around the face. An inch or 2 too long and it's quickly goes ratty,
Dry with my head upside down and leave it messy as it looks thicker.

SlinkyB · 27/05/2014 19:54

I'm thinking one-length might be the way to go. I've had layers and feathering for donkeys thinking they made my hair look fuller and added "movement" (that's what the various hairdressers say) but maybe I should try growing them out.

I basically just wanna look like Gwyneth Paltrow, is that too much to ask?! Grin

stick with shaping and NO layers....if you are staying short.

Mine is fine and straight, I have had it short, but any layers and I just look like a dishevelled teenage paperboy

IME you need an EXCELLENT cut, not too long or it looks witchy and rat-endy and just hangs there like a damp curtain.....if you are going longer then maybe some long layers, but don't let them at you with the thinning scissors!

Catsmamma · 27/05/2014 20:13

just saw thr bun/donut tip.....Poundland have some really great "things" for buns

i think they are called hair snaps, much easier to use than a donut and they really stay put...I used to buy the dear ones from Hair-a-gami for dd years ago when she was at school, they never move. But the Poundland ones are great!!

Hair-a-gami thing...but buy in Poundland!

or these...I thought these had vanished from the face of the earth ....they were well fab!

SlinkyB · 27/05/2014 20:17

WildBill that sounds exactly what I've got now, and what I do with it. Drying upside-down and using a Big Hair at the roots keeps it full looking and bouncy for a couple of hours tops.

Cats your description of when you had yours short with layers made me grin! When mine is like that, I have one side that sticks out at the ends, and the other tends to curl under. Not a good look.

SlinkyB and WildBill I have pretty much the same hairstyle as both of you, it seems.

My hair’s so fine it’s pretty much impossible for me to get it to stay up and look good in any type of style (plus tying it up is uncomfortable) and I don’t have the right face shape and features for short hair. My jaw is quite weak and having a fringe makes my face look even fatter.

I’ve pretty much had the same hairstyle for the past 10 years – in a kind of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” way, or should that be a “I don’t know what the hell else to do with it” way?

I find having a side parting suits me and I have it trimmed every 10 weeks or so, otherwise I find that it gets ratty on the ends.

The best thing I’ve found to give my hair more body is Babyliss root boost, a micro crimper which you use at the roots of your hair to lift it.

Pandsbear · 28/05/2014 14:00

I found that when my hair was longer it was stringy (despite my best efforts) and so fine that I couldn't use a donut thingy as I didn't have enough hair to cover it and then the pins would pull my hair out! Yes OP I am short & slight re: Louise Brooks hair.

The most useful product i have had in ages was a recommendation on a similar thread on here a few months ago- Toni & guy sea salt texturing spray.

Lazysummerdays · 28/05/2014 14:15

I think you need to differentiate between fine hair and thin ( not much) hair.

The texture of my hair is fine so I am told but I am also told that there is a lot of it- ie hairs to the square inch if you like!

So fine hair per se doesn't affect styles so much as volume.
I wear my hair just touching my shoulders in a slightly layered bob- the sides and back are roughly 2-3 inches shorter than the longest parts and I have a side parting and a full fringe.

I can either flick the ends up or turn them under like a classic bob.

If it gets too long the shape is lost and is just hangs which is not flattering.
