Is 30 too old to do the vintage goth style for the first time?

Hello Smile

I have always loved the vintage/romantic goth style, but never had the courage to do it.

I have pale skin, very long(middle of my back) dark brown/black hair and whenever I've played around with the look, it does suit me, but I always chicken out leaving the house.

I love amy lee's style and actually get told a fair bit that I look like her, which is nice Grin

The problem is as I said, I'm 30 and whereas, I know that's not old, I'm just not sure I can get away with this kind of style.

Am I right in being cautious?

Ta ladies.

Go for it! I think '70s/'80s 'trad.' style goth is more stylish than the Victorianesque/ Steampunk look which is popular today. Each to their own though!

Also, this lady's blog mothmouth-throughthelookingglass.blogspot.co.uk/ is fantastic as inspiration for doing goth subtly and beautifully.

Google Whitby Goth festival and check out what people in their 40s and 50s are wearing to see how splendid someone can look at any age. You're not quite a baby-bat at 30 but you will be younger than most trad-goths.

A lot of goths reference an historical period that suits them and then goths it up whether it be medieval or art deco or whenever. You could go for clothes in a shape that has always suited you and concentrate on interesting fabrics and goth colours.

It sounds like you love the late 80s romantic goth stuff which took influences from High Victoriana (but not steampunk) and the hippy/pre-Raphaelite era. In the late 80s, most of us couldn't get goth clothes from a goth shop.

We had to adapt from what we could get on the market or High Street. You could make friends with a dressmaker or try customising stuff yourself (i.e. adding lace ruffles to things). You were lucky if you got to shop at Kensington Market or Carnaby Street on a school trip for your PVC/lace/velvet trouser needs. Plus there were always the more punky ones wearing bin bags. Bin bags are probably not an option for you!

I suspect the majority of us ended up wearing a band t-shirt and jeans/swishy skirt most of the time except for gigs when our best frilly velvet clothes were worn. Luckily you have way more options. There are a lot of goth boutiques online these days.

I am sure you will look lovely and if you don't like it, it is a pretty easy style to reverse.
