Help me give up wearing powder

I have always worn powder over foundation because I don't want to look shiny. I have been told by a make up counter assistant that I'm not but if I ever go without powder and catch a look at myself I don't like it. I'm not sure that powder ever actually looks that great in itself, so is there a way to do without and not look shiny?

I have very sensitive skin. I usually use a La Roche Posay moisturiser and a max factor foundation, with powder on top. I did try that L'Oreal Skin Perfection cream that was released a few months ago but I found it just made my face look caked with crap (which it is, really but it's not the look I'm gong for!)

You need Mac skin finish powder - wonder product and barely noticeable. Or MIneral Veil by Bare Minerals.

LaTrucha · 26/05/2014 13:22

I did used to use those sheets. I can't remember why I stopped.

Thanks for the powder suggestions? Are they translucent by any chance? I have very pale skin and am not near any nice shops that might have them.

The mineral veil is translucent but the Mac skin finish comes in colours.

I've managed to pretty much stop using powder since using this as a primer:

Thanks Dame. I shall have a ook onloine.

swingonastar - do you wear foundation over that? does it cake, if you do? (p.s. sung that song to my kids at bed last night Smile)

Lucky kids :-)

Yes I use LRP Effaclar Duo, then that matte stuff, then foundation. All goes on well, even if I'm chucking it all on quickly in the morning! Sometimes doesn't look like it's sunk in, but always fine. It's been quite a revelation as I'd always wanted to use cream blushers, but found that I couldn't with powder, always caked.

Also makes touching up/reapplying later in the day a lot easier as I find that if I'm wearing powder it can only take so much before it looks/feels a bit yuk. I've never got on well with the wee blotch papers, so applying more powder is generally what I would do!

I recently had very little time after work to get home and back out for dinner, and knew I'd not have time to redo make-up properly - ideally I would have liked to have taken it all off there and then but instead mixed some of the primer with foundation on a sponge and used that to touch up a little. It worked well, and I know that if I'd been wearing powder I'd have felt a bit of a mess as the night went on.

Bit of an essay, but I wouldn't have thought that I could go without powder, and had tried a few other primers to no avail!

I love a light dusting of powder, looks very polished.

Like previous commentors I would say use blotting sheets (give them another try!) You can get good ones from The Body Shop, they used to do a tea tree one (possibly now discontinued?) and I think they still do a mineral one. They're relatively cheap, and are good for when you catch sight of yourself looking a bit shiny! You say you use La Roche Posay - have you tried their Effaclar Mat: www.boots.com/en/La-Roche-Posay-Effaclar-Mat-40ml_1338916/ I think it's really good...And definitely gives a matte finish, even if it's only for the first half of the day (nothing seems to last that well sadly!) I've got further advice on skincare routines, makeup etc. on my blog: daisydabbles.blogspot.co.uk. Anyway, good luck with your search! Daisy xxx

Thanks for the ideas. Swingona - yes, that's exactly the kind of thing that puts me off it. That and reading that powder just collects in your wrinkles. I'm not actually sure that's true but it is such an off putting image!

daisydables - Thanks I didn't know they did one. I used to use a Clarins one. I can't remember why I stopped that either. I'll have a look at it and your blog too.
