Anyone else find facial oils actually ageing?

Hi ladies

I bought some rose hip oil, as recommended by several on here, but have to say, apart from the first couple of days, where I woke up with a bit of a glow, I've found it has made my 'problem areas', well.....more of a problem.

With me, it's the nose to mouth lines that I was trying to improve, or at the very least, stop them from getting worse for as long as I could. However, after a few weeks now of using it, I'm pretty sure my lines or more visable.

I massage it into my skin for a few minutes, then wipe it off with a muslin cloth and very warm/hot water.

Am I doing something wrong? Or has anyone else has a similar experience?

Thank you!

Don't think you're meant to wipe it off - I just massage a couple of drops onto my face before bed..

I use the Sanctuary facialists oil and enjoy the moisturising effect but it won't fill out actual lines

peachdaiquirionmytoes · 24/05/2014 10:58

I just thought it was me! Whenever I have tried oils at night, I wake up covered with lots on tiny fine lines all over my face.

Hopefully · 24/05/2014 10:59

I wouldn't use rosehip oil as a cleanser (which is essentially what you're doing). I use about 4 drops as a moisturiser at night after cleansing, and massage it in well. I alternate with night cream - I find oil and cream makes me break out a bit (although makes the skin in between the spots look v glowy - I can't win!)

Hopefully · 24/05/2014 11:01

Ps using the hot cloth to remove might be throwing your skin even more out of whack - it can be quite drying IME if the water is too hot.

WildBill · 24/05/2014 12:39

I think the cloth and wiping off with hot water is the problem. I put a couple of drops in my palm. Rub hands together to warm it then press hands on face and massage a little, done.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 12:54

Hmmm, maybe that's where I've been going wrong then.

I do add a serum afterwards (EL ANR) which, on it's own was actually good, but I'd been wanting to start facial massages for a while, so thought I'd do it before I applied the serum. Maybe it's all too much for my skin. Too much of a good thing perhaps Hmm

Can you massage your face without oil? I am tempted to stop using it and go back to the serum, followed with astral cream at night.

I tried facial exercises, concentrating again, on my problem areas, but also found that that was, if anything, making it worse.

A bit stuck really.

I would just use one thing - skin can react as much from too much being done to it as it can neglect. I would use something if you are going to massage your skin as it may drag otherwise.

seasalty50 · 24/05/2014 13:16

Can you maybe do the massage part at the cleansing stage using a cream cleanser? For massage you just need enough 'slip' so that you don't drag the skin.

I agree about the hot water part, it's really drying. Also, a serum after an oil sounds wrong. I would use a serum then an oil. Lighter texture first.

To compromise how about using the oil a couple of times a week on its own and the serum/astral combo on other nights.

I use Alpha H liquid gold every other night and an oil on the inbetween nights - it's a good balance for my skin and the Alpha H keeps me spot-free as a bonus!

squoosh · 24/05/2014 13:30

No. I love facial oils and think they have made a hugely positive difference to my dry and dehydrated skin.

Maybe it's specifically rosehip oil that doesn't suit you. Why don't you try the Boots Botanics one, it's about a fiver. Just massage a few drops into your skin. Don't wash it off though.

AwkwardSquad · 24/05/2014 13:40

Rose hip oil did nothing for me, either. My skin became dehydrated. I've had better results with jojoba oil so maybe it's just that specific oil.

Floisme · 24/05/2014 14:32

I'm a big fan of oil for both cleansing and moisturising but some of the claims I've seen for Rosehip oil make me a bit Hmm

Oil makes my skin feel nicer, doesn't irritate like a lot of creams do and can soften up my lines but it doesn't make them go away. (Mind you neither, in my opinion, will any over-the-counter cream).

I've tried Rosehip oil and I thought it was over-hyped and over-priced. I find coconut/almond/grapeseed/wheatgerm or olive oil do the same job for far less money.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 16:36

Not sure what to do now

I didn't use it last night and have to say, my skin looks better for it.

Maybe I'll just do it a couple of times a week.

Quite interested in trying one of those rotating cleansing gadgets. Can't remember what they're called, but heard they were good.

If it looks better without I would stop using it. Add a drop of it to your handcream or neat on your knees/elbows to use it up.

All the stuff (and it's a lot) that I fall out of love with ends up on my décolleté or knees Grin

Georgethesecond · 24/05/2014 16:48

I have the Olay rotating cleansing gadget. It makes my skin very smooth and my makeup sit better but I still have blackheads.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 17:15

Sea, my skin initially looked really good, but then it started to look dull again. As I say, probably worse than before. It's bizarre.

George, so does that kind of massage your skin too?

As far as I'm aware facial oils are moisturisers not cleansers. I have the clarins blue orchid facial oil as use as follows:

Cleanse
Tone
Face serum
Oil mixed in with moisturiser

I used to do moisturiser then oil but found it was a bit too heavy and gave me spots. Oil on its on isn't moisturising enough for me so mixed together is the solution that works for me.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 18:16

Soda, thanks. Will give that a try

Has anyone tried Astral?

seasalty50 · 24/05/2014 18:33

Maybe you're dehydrated rather than dry.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 19:18

Sea, yeah I don't have dry skin. I have slightly greasy skin sometimes, but am lucky because I very rarely get spots.

seasalty50 · 24/05/2014 19:40

Generally dry skin needs oil, dehydrated skin needs water. Check out the hydraquench range at Clarins or choose an oil that addresses dehydration. Oils are sometimes used to seal in moisture if that makes sense.

merlotguzzler · 24/05/2014 19:48

Interesting. I think it's likely that I have dehydrated skin. I drink a lot of coffee and as the name suggests, I like my wine too.

seasalty50 · 24/05/2014 19:52

My skin is preserved because of my daily chardonnay intake so I do understand Grin
