hair dilemma - general gurus of style advice needed

please help

I need a style overhaul and some ideas on what to do with my hair

it's currently long but VERY dry at the ends

it looks thick but it isn't really, I just have absolutely loads of it

it is fairly frizzy but doesn't really form curls unfortunately

it's red-brownish with grey at the temples which I could do without

currently just long without much shape, I wash about once a week and let it dry naturally with some serum on- normally looks nice the day of the washing, shiny and wavy

after that I tie it up or back or straighten it, which also looks nice, although it is getting too dry at the ends now so I can't keep doing this which is what's prompted my plea for help

not sure what shape my face is, square or round probably, quite wide, quite nice cheekbones but fairly nondescript eyes, non-button (!) nose, wrinkly old forehead but otherwise ok for my years

I need something easy to manage, definitely NO hairdryers as I have so much hair it takes ages and my arms threathen to fall off

would consider a fringe

something funky would be ok, tho' I find funky and frizzy are a bit of a tricky concept for the one head. otherwise classic glamour would suit.

not asking for much really am i?

am in London, so tips for good salons in central or se london also useful

thank you gurus of style

How long is long? If bra-strap or longer, just getting 6in cut off the ends will make a world of difference to the condition and make it easier to handle without a radical style change.
Beyond that I'm straying beyond my expertise as my hair is shoulder length and straightish and has been since I was 6, although the one thing I would say is if your hair looks nicest the day it's washed could you (gasp) wash it more often? Using a good shampoo and an intensive condtioner on the ends means that washing needn't dry it out.

it's really long - almost down to my bum when straightened so you are right, 6inches off would probably make huge difference

I guess I was just fishing about for ideas for a complete transformation

of course you are right, if I weren't so lazy I could just wash it a bit more often and that would help

(in my (fairly pitiful) defence, there is so much of it it does take ages to wash, and then ages to dry also, and I have two small kids and am ALWAYS in a rush...)

thanks tho'

down to your bum?!
make that 12in off, or possibly 24!

will draw this thread to Malory and AnnieMac (genuine style gurus)'s attention too.

MrsBadger · 31/08/2006 14:35

aha I see Anniemac found it all by herself...

Agree with Mrs B and Anniemac, get some cut off the length, if the ends are dry this is the best solution, and will also minimise the frizz. I would also agree with going for some layers, which again will help define your hair texture. I find that if you mix a bit of leave in conditioner with some styling cream like Frieda Frizz Ease wind down cream, and rake it through the hair with your fingers, it helps to calm down fluffiness and define the waves.

ah now I am not so tall that my bum is 2 feet away from anywhere sensible to have as a hair length!!!
I like it long as I like to do things with it, plait it,ponytail it, wear it in a big bunch on top of my head with a scarf around it. O dear, I am starting to sound quite quite mad now.

anyway, yes,I need to get it chopped a bit and I need to wash it more often and I will try the tip about the leavein conditioner and cream stuff

now, can I really wet and condition every day without shampooing? won't it just get laden down with product?

and should I get a fringe?

If hair is wavy and frizzy, and you don't want to use a hairdryer then I would say no, it will just be wavy and frizzy around your face. If you want some softness around the face, I would get the hair around the face cut a little shorter, and graduated.

hmm, mightn't mind if only had to blowdry a fringe, and it would hide the wrinkly forehead, however you are right, it does need further thought...

I am feeling inspired now, might just have to go to hairdressers on way home from work...

Snap Anniemac!

According to many great and good Celeb hairdressers, the best length for 'long hair' taking account of a persons height, is to have hair no longer than to the middle of the back, i.e bra-strap length. It is then not too long and straggly, should't weigh you down or get too out of condition, and still looks very long.
