Lightweight nightwear for young children

Wasn't sure if this is the right place for the thread, sorry if it's not.

DD1 is 4yo, tall for her age and very slim*. She runs very hot, the rest of us can be shivering in our winter woollies and she will be in a short sleeved t-shirt.

I've been buying her slim fit pyjamas but even the shorty versions are causing her to overheat in bed. I'm trying to find pure cotton nightdresses for her now as I think that will help her keep cooler in bed than in t-shirt style fabric, but I can only find cotton jersey nightdresses in the shops. Am I just looking in the wrong places?

I don't want to spend £££ as she grows so fast, I measured her the other day and she's grown over an inch in the last 3 months (no wonder she's got growing pains).

Any ideas, please?

*Yeah, sorry, I know, sounds like a stealth boast right? Luckily the child doesn't take after me, otherwise she'd be short and rotund.

Bump.

Totally shameless, like.

I'm not sure her nightwear will make enough of a difference if she's already in shorty pjs.
Is she just under a sheet or empty duvet cover? I would lighten her bedding if you can.

MrsCosmopilite · 20/05/2014 13:11

Hmm, don't know. DD is three and fairly tall. We've just moved so she's now in a 'big girls room' with her cot adapted into a bed (until we can afford a bed!) - and she's got a new duvet.

Night before last she was boiling hot in her PJ's - I just took off the duvet and put on a lightweight cover. If she carries on I'll have to see if she'll sleep in shortie PJs or in her underwear.

ScrambledSmegs · 20/05/2014 13:13

It's as light as can be, tbh. She's under a sheet at the moment, but tends to kick it off.

It's just in my experience, if I wear a cotton jersey vest and pants or shorts to bed in hot weather, I swelter. If I wear a crisp cotton nightdress then I'm much more comfortable. In fact, even more so than if I'm naked.

Hence the idea of getting her some proper cotton nighties. Thought I'd start with one (if I can find it) and if it helps, get some more.

Have you looked at The White Company?

RoganJosh · 20/05/2014 13:20

Sorry, you said you don't want to spend too much. A nightie would last a while though as it can be a bit short and still wearable.
I think proper non jersey cotton is going to be expensive.

TheWorldAccordingToJC · 20/05/2014 13:21

can she not just wear nothing? my ds usually does half the time or I pop him in a fresh pair of pants to sleep in with nothing else

ThePerfectNegroni · 20/05/2014 13:24

Powell craft so pure cotton nightdresses. Super cute retro styles made out of proper cotton material rather than tshirt material.

ScrambledSmegs · 20/05/2014 13:27

I've tried suggesting she wears nothing but she refuses to go to bed naked. It's ridiculous but she screams and cries her head off, I don't really have the energy for a fight at bedtime. I've tried making a game of it and other gentle methods, no dice.

Yes, I saw the White Company but I can't afford £30 on a child's nightdress. Thanks anyway.

Currently googling. Some very old fashioned websites coming up!

Nightdresses have to be flame retardant, so cotton ones will be more expensive.

Could you try getting her a cotton blouse/dress/tunic instead? There'd probably be more choice that way, and it would be cheaper.

ScrambledSmegs · 20/05/2014 13:34

Oh, Powell craft looks good. Ok, so not supermarket-cheap, but I've found a lovely sleeveless one that looks ideal. Thanks!

In the meantime I may put her in last year's h&m cotton blouses, good idea thank you.

How about just a pair of cotton knickers and a cotton vest? That's what my DD wears on warm evenings as she doesn't like to go to bed naked either (though she's quite happy running around the house with no clothes on, work that out Confused)

Sonotkylie · 20/05/2014 14:53

Ds also refused to sleep 'bare' so it was just a cotton vest and pants for him, which seemed to do it, with an empty duvet cover over the top

Modan · 20/05/2014 21:43

I would second Powell Craft, also www.minivanilla.com have some cotton nighties as do www.andsotodream.com

not that cheap though but as has been said before, at least with nighties they will last as they can be worn short
