Leggings at work?

Just wondering. Years ago, when leggings were "in" I was banned from wearing them on the grounds of tmi. It was an office environment, but the leggings were good quality, not the glorified tights of today.

Going back to work in a semi-formal environment and at the moment live in leggings. Can I continue to wear them? And if so, with what?

There is a call centre downstairs from me.

Some of the sights you see... Well you just wouldn't.

Lots in leggings uggs and short t shirts. It's camel toe and cottage cheese arses a plenty.

If you are going to wear make sure they are 100% not see through..and you don't wear a white thong under Shock

springchickennolonger · 19/05/2014 21:21

Yikes, red that's just the look I was hoping to avoid..

Cigarette pants seem a bettrr idea.

What happened to slouchy, unstructured trouser suits? Very nineties, but foolproof office wear.

Oh lord, the 'forgot to put your skirt on' leggings look has no place anywhere, unless everyone keeps their eyes shut.

Otoh, thinner leggings are fine with skirts and boots, if you do it well. Nothing looks (or feels) worse than sweaty, snaggy 20 deniers on sausage legs.

PurplyBlue · 19/05/2014 22:18

I remember the 90s trouser suits! I did attempt the look with a large floppy polyester jacket once, but probably looked a complete numpty. But then again, probably no more of an inelegant lump than I looked in my navy / black polyester skirts and snaggy, sweaty nylons.

I think if you are very slender and wearing leggings underneath a long chiffon type blouse with loafers/pumps it might be okay.
Or you might look like peter pan.

Skinheadmermaid · 20/05/2014 09:08

When i worked in an office i wore blouses/shirts with dark denim or black jeans and the occasional dress. The other woman used to come in in what looked like a sack-a potato sack with leggings. She never even brushed her hair or put make up or nail varnish on ever. Sometimes she wore this furry sack on top of the other sack.
Sorry thats completely off topic but i still get nightmares thinking about it.

SuperFlyHigh · 20/05/2014 09:35

what about when the chiffon shirt just about or doesn't skim the buttocks area?!

In fact I know another woman who wears this - she's in her mid-late 30s and is a good 12-14 - but now her legs from behind look distinctly chunky and it's not a good look.

springchickennolonger · 21/05/2014 19:01

Ah! The Peter Pan look! That's bloody everywhere!

I do that, but not to work in an office.

springchicken - yes the Peter Pan look. This woman I know teams it with open zipped ankle boots.

I mean it's not terrible but I fail to see how it looks professional!

Greengardenpixie · 21/05/2014 20:23

I am a teacher and i wear them!! However, apart from denim, mostly anything goes. Agree with the comment about judging what others wear in the first week. I started at a new school and didnt wear them and looked at what others did as dress codes can change depending upon the actual place.

springchickennolonger · 21/05/2014 20:28

I suppose it depends what is meant by "professional". I'm often surprised at the way people dress for work. I see workers in (I assume) social services and the third sector who look as if they've been dragged through hedges on the way to work. Imo, not professional, but not "cool", or edgy, or arty either.

Maybe your Peter Pan woman thought she looked cool?

By "professional" I think I mean groomed, neat and quite formal, and suited, not separates.

I'm in adult education but used to dress differently ie in mainly trouser suits pre-dc.

Now I'm not so sure!

green I've been on supply and had the comment "Miss, why are you wearing a suit?" from the children.

And there's me thinking I was appropriately clad! I must've looked a right knob!

Just no. I can't believe some of the sights I have seen. I wore a simple shift dress and jacket the other day and everyone asked me if I was going for an interview thats how unusual smartish clothes are.

Greengardenpixie · 25/05/2014 23:30

Yes, no-one wears a suit apart from management at school. I do think the children at the school i teach would thing it a bit odd and may also ask me. No-one really tends to wear suit trousers either!!! Its mostly skirts, leggings and tunics or a wideleg trouser but not a suit type, more linen or even floral!! I would look really out of place. I agree that 'smart' clothes for women are really becoming a thing of the past. Not even if i go to the doctors do they dress in this way...but men tend to wear a shirt and tie! In my job esp with infant classes, its really impractical anyway.

Greengardenpixie · 25/05/2014 23:32

..and spring chick even our headteacher had a jumpsuit on!!! and a flowery one at that! Definetly not formal!!

BikeRunSki · 25/05/2014 23:34

Not unless you are a fitness istructor.

LauraPashley · 25/05/2014 23:36

The school next to mine has "banned" leggings for staff. I still wear them with what I hope are formal enough dresses/tunic tops and smart ankle boots, or knee highs in the winter. Arse always covered!!

Greengardenpixie · 26/05/2014 16:53

If i wear leggings i always cover my bum! Most of the things i wear are more like a short dress. I would NEVER dream of wearing anything short! I am even fussy what i wear with my jeans!

happyyonisleepyyoni · 26/05/2014 19:59

Urgh. Leggings should never be worn without a top that covers crotch and arse. Just don't. Unless you are less then 5 years old. OP is it that difficult to get a pair of plain black work trousers if you are totally stuck for ideas, then regroup after your first week.
