Anyone gone from long to really short hair?

And did you regret it?

I am bored of my hair. Its a pain and I hate it. Its thick and wavy and it gets wavier as it gets longer.

Am thinking of a short pixie crop but dont know if the change will be too drastic?

I have done this several times and never regretted it.

On me, longer hair is more ageing, as well as being more of a faff in general.

FragglerockAmpersand · 10/05/2014 22:23

I've fairly recently had a pixie cut (I mean REALLY pixie) after a lifetime of long Victorian hair. Best thing I ever did - aesthetically, stylistically, practically, politically - the lot Grin

Am now total evangelist and have to prevent myself from hauling pals into salons. It's been 5 months and have not regretted it for one moment since.

LadySybilLikesCake · 10/05/2014 22:26

Oh, I love this one too

Michelle is definitely my hair idol.

MrsDiesel · 10/05/2014 22:29

I went from waist length to chon length bob but I had to go to two separate hairdressers. The first refused to go that short incase I regretted it, I let her talk me into a shoulder length layered do instead, woke up next day knowing I defo still wanted the bob so went to another hairdresser. I wish I had been more assertive in the first place.

LadySybilLikesCake · 10/05/2014 22:31

The last time I went to Toni and Guy they did that, MrsDiesel. I was well pissed off. I know my hair, I know what I wanted. Angry

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 10/05/2014 22:32

LadySybil the second one is much nicer the first one is a bit 'safe'

FragglerockAmpersand · 10/05/2014 22:33

I have this. Pretty much this colour too. I look just like that too obviously

I love it. DH is getting sick of me wandering around the house crooning about how GAWJUS I am Grin

Sometimes keeping a longer fringe is a good transition

Ds has just told me that I'd look lovely with Michelle Williams's hair (the second one)

Pinterest is great for looking at hairstyles.

LemonBreeland · 10/05/2014 23:23

I did a long time ago. Turned out really short didn't suit me, but I don't regret it as I needed to try it. I do agreee that the biggest difficulty is convincing a hairdresser to do it.

Just last month I went from below bra strap length to bob, and that got quite a big reaction. I love to do big changes, it's fun.

Eyelet · 10/05/2014 23:38

I've done this twice.

Reregretted it I must confess. I'm trying to grow it long again (it was almost waist length) and it's taken three years to get past my shoulders.

Onsera3 · 11/05/2014 06:06

I did it in stages rather than drastically and I wouldn't do it again.

I found it much more maintenance than longer hair. As others have mentioned you have to style it. It just looks like a boys haircut without product so I used that everyday and that requires washing out.

Also you have to get it cut religiously or it can look pretty bad so I found I spent a lot more at the hairdressers. And you have only one look- this is why I won't even do a fringe again.

I have thick wavy hair like yours so it's wash and wear. I never need to use hair dyer or straighteners and don't have to use product. I can go as long as is convenient btw cuts.

As others have mentioned there are lots of pros to having a short cut but I just wanted to give you some cons so you can weigh it up!

ivykaty44 · 11/05/2014 06:25

Yes I used to have long hair and got a short bob and now have a pixie cut.

I wash it every day, I have to as I have bed head hair

It takes me just a few minutes though and I love it.

WowOoo · 11/05/2014 06:36

One of the school mums recently went from hair almost at elbows to something similar to LadySybils' photo.

I don't know her all that well, but I had to tell her her new hair looked fantastic. It's taken 5 years off her and is so much more flattering.

ThreeBecameFour · 11/05/2014 06:50

In my Uni days in the early 90's I had long blond straight hair which I thought was boring. I cut off into a Gwyneth Paltrow Sliding Doors cut...

I did like it for about 2 days.

Then spent years growing it back again...It has been various lengths since, but never shorter than shoulder length..

BikeRunSki · 11/05/2014 07:01

I 've done this and regretted it. Spent the next 5 years growing it back. But, my hair is very very curly, and is rather Jackson 5 circa 1974 when short. Length gives it enough weight to fall into ringlets.

SummerRain · 11/05/2014 07:05

I do this fairly often, not a pixie, I usually say I want it just about long enough to tie back and let the hairdresser do whatever she wants.

I always love it, then miss my long hair, grow it, get annoyed by it and have it all chopped again. My hair grows stupidly fast so it's about an 18 month cycle each time Grin

Change is good for the soul, and hair grows so it's the easiest thing to change as if you don't like it you won't have to live with it for long!

KatieKaye · 11/05/2014 08:46

Did this a couple of months ago and love it.
I'm over 50 and found my straight, fine hair was looking very thin in my long bob, the fringe especially.
Got it all chopped off into Jamie Lee Curtis style do and love it. My hair looks thicker, is in great condition and it takes minutes to wash and style.
Just love it.

Cockadoodledooo · 11/05/2014 09:04

I did. Below bra strap/ lower back length to a pixie crop. Hairdresser asked me if I was sure more times than Dignitas would have!

Didn't regret it as such but had a massive crisis when I realised how much more like my mum I looked! I mean, my mum's amazing and awesome but 30 years older than me..

It's shoulder length now and suits me much better. I'm 37

Sunnyfeet · 11/05/2014 09:12

I like the idea of really short hair ..... And it looks fab on lots of people. But I find that somewhere between jaw length and just above the shoulder works best on me.

ThatIsBoring · 11/05/2014 09:13

I have short hair and hardly have to style it. I do a three minute blow dry of my fringe area so it doesn't curl and that is it. It thick with a slight wave. My biggest issue is that I sometimes leave it too long between cuts but generally it looks fab.

I do a lot of sport and can shower several times a day so I would never consider longer or high maintainence hair.

I think I have had all the styles shown in the photos on this thread.

Lonecatwithkitten · 11/05/2014 09:16

I did last year. I had had 20 years of long (to my bum) thick hair and had it chopped off last year. First my hair dresser went to just above my shoulders which I lived with for 6 weeks, then I had the bob. I love it much less time to wash etc, I look younger I am told.
My ExH never wanted my hair cut, it was very cathartic cutting it off.

ilovepowerhoop · 11/05/2014 09:23

I did it gradually - went from below shoulder length to a short bob in January and then got the rest chopped off in March this year. It is so quick to wash and dry and I like it. You need it tidied up more often though.
