Yes that is overpriced - as is most Mint Velvet and agree Whistles pricing is crazy.

SuperFlyHigh · 09/05/2014 14:19

it was the ONE thing I liked I saw in there...

got GC for Whistles but will wait for Grazia discount voucher or sale.

Even at the normal end of the high street - Top Shop, Warehouse, Zara etc - the prices for tops in poor-quality man-made fabrics really make my eyes water sometimes.

All Saints! Loved a silk top but it was £198.

I always think River Island is £10 too much.

itsnothingoriginal · 09/05/2014 20:28

Yes prices are becoming even more eyewatering for some things. Problem is that as retailers assume everyone is after a 'bargain', they are setting ridiculous prices for things in order to offer codes and flash reductions. Most of the time, the reduced price feels like the 'true' price for the item. Really annoying!

I used to love Topshop as a teen in the early 90s too but is way too overpriced these days and I feel too old for most of their stuff

wasabipeanut · 09/05/2014 20:34

I saw a lovely red floral dress in Top Shop this week. I really ummed and ahhed over it as it was a lovely print but still polyester/viscose type stuff. Would have paid £30 - it was £45. No deal.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/05/2014 20:41

MV stuff v overpriced. Some stuff in Whistles is good value at full price (ie the tube skirts) but most of it is stupidly expensive.

All Saints prices are insane - and the quality is poor.

Drywhiteplease · 09/05/2014 21:03

Hollister....as well as being a really unpleasant shopping experience they charge ridiculous prices for rubbish quality.

bouquetofpencils · 09/05/2014 21:20

Oasis have lots of lovely shell tops from 22 pounds, it is my go to shop now. Crew cut cardigans for 25 pounds in lots of colours. Well cut trousers between 30 and 40 pounds. And somewhere I haven't considered for ages also has some lovely new stuff for good prices... Red Herring.
Other stores seem to add at least 25 percent on for no reason. I think they think that we think that if it is more money it must be more desirable.

Saurus72 · 09/05/2014 21:20

Crap quality and sweaty polyester for stupid prices, crossed with indignant women - my favourite type of thread! I think Top Shop might be having a bit of an identity crisis - there are really cheap things, then there is this dress for example : www.topshop.com/en/tsuk/product/clothing-427/dresses-442/maxi-midi-dresses-558/strappy-back-silk-star-print-maxi-dress-by-unique-2874668?refinements=category~%5b209719%7c208523%5d&bi=21&ps=20

I get that it's silk, and made in England both of which are Good Things, but can you imagine ever paying £275 for something from Top Shop?!

Totally agree re: Whistles and Monsoon. Polyester a-go-go, and ridiculous prices.

Pompbear · 09/05/2014 21:50

yes! i love mint velvet and could just about stomach their prices with offer codes when they used lots of cotton and silk, but £90 for a polyester top?! having a laugh

SuperFlyHigh · 10/05/2014 10:24

bouquet you're right about Oasis - has been one of my go-tos only as work shopping centre has Next, H&M, River Island etc but nothing I really like like Zara etc.

I've been a bit miffed to see the odd dress reduced in their sale (Oasis in dept store as they have a shop too) so now will hold off again unless I see something I really really like.

I'm really impressed by Oasis at the moment too.

PastaandCheese · 10/05/2014 10:37

Yep. And the quality just gets worse.

I've sent tops back to Boden twice now for developing nasty little holes when washed only to notice they are made from man made fibres.

Cuteypatootey · 11/05/2014 02:52

Yep, but why shop there, there are plenty of budget options. The price of cotton has risen substantially and this does affect the clothing industry.

sleepdodger · 11/05/2014 12:38

Err have you stopped to consider WHY things cost more
You want a decent ethical factory
You want current trend- faster shopping costs more
Raw materials cost more
UK operating costs and rate at highest ever

We were conditioned to paying too little and buying too often

KosherBacon · 11/05/2014 12:45

I totally agree that decent materials cost money. There was a thread a couple of days ago about the Boden Ravello top, looking for cheaper alternatives. The boden one is 35% silk and viscose and with a code is usually £40. All the dupes were 100% polyester and £20-30. I'd rather have a natural material than polyester.

What I do resent is the many shops replacing natural materials for polyester and increasing their prices.

I wanted a new coat last winter. Trying to find one that wasn't polyester or with a low wool count was madness. M&S were advertising their "with wool" ranges, but they were nearly all 90% polyester 10% wool.

CointreauVersial · 11/05/2014 13:07

I think people are so conditioned to expect sales, 30% off days, voucher codes etc etc that the retailers compensate by overpricing to start with.

I rarely buy anything full price nowadays, I just wait for the deals.

Nocomet · 11/05/2014 13:19

10% Wool add £10 to the price Angry
White Stuff do it too!

DD1 and I are allergic to wool. DD to the extent she can't wear it at all, whereas I might risk it if the garment wasn't so over priced.

The number of tunic style jumbers both of us have decided not to buy is very good for our bank balances.

Nocomet · 11/05/2014 13:23

Wasabi I think.I know which dress in TS you saw, it's very pretty, but DD tried on a very similar on in Dotty P´s which was about £25

I bought a trouser suit in Next, in a rush for an event. It was £100 for polyester! I wore it for 5 hours and it looked like I had slept in it. I returned it Angry

DH can get a pure wool suit in M&S for the same money.
