Debenhams personal shopper - tips?

I'm going for a two hour "wardrobe update" tomorrow morning. I'm slightly dreading it - not sure what to expect or whether it'll be any good! For anyone who's done it before - what can I do to get the most out of it? Normally when I hit the shops I spend about six hours trying things on, I buy a few items, and change my mind when I get home, and end up returning things. Hence why my wardrobe is pitiful and almost empty. I've had two DC quite close together so I would say I've been buying "that'll do" clothes for the past three years.....

I did this and it was great. Was very honest about how much I had to spend and what my budget would buy me in an ideal world!

And I was honest with myself about what I would get most use out of and so didn't buy everything they recommended... There's still one top I mourn, but I didn't have the money and it was a want not a need!

I did it and it was helpful. I thought it would be terrifying but the shopper was lovely and I didn't feel odd. I bought a few things, and returned one later, no problem.

Oh phew, that sounds good! I think I don't like the idea of sitting there just passively waiting for the personal shopper to come back with armfuls of clothes that I would never normally go near - I'm worried I'll be too polite to disagree if he/she says something suits me and I don't like it. I do need to be forced out of my current style rut, though. I don't want to come across too negative and not be open to change. But I also don't want to buy lots of things that I feel daft in!

I have done a wardrobe update and also a mini update as I was starting a new job after moving back to the UK and needed work clothes. I think you need to be very clear about what you are looking for - for example, if you don't like wearing skirts, or you hate a particular colour, say so. At the same time, stay open to ideas - I tried on a few things I would never normally have picked up, and they suited me.

There was no pressure from the personal shoppers I saw, they were lovely and very helpful.

I did this with debenhams personal shopper a couple of weeks ago for a wedding and she was really lovely! She brought things I wouldn't have thought about which were a pleasant surprise when I tried them on. I ended up buying three dresses she was so spot on, one for the wedding, one for nights out and aNother for more casual summer wear. I would definitely do it again.

Do you mind saying how much your budgets were ? Id love to do this but I would only have maybe £200 I could spend . Sorry for hijack . He's some Wine

Thanks everyone. That all sounds really positive - just what I need! I'm looking forward to it now. Olaf I don't have a massive budget, really. If I end up with some amazing outfits I guess I'll be willing to fork out for them, but I'm hoping not to have to spend more than £350-£400. Ive been shopping in Sainsburys/New Look/Dorothy Perkins for the past few years, and haven't had a splurge in a while, so I can sort of justify it. I don't like spending loads of money on clothes. But I do need lots of new stuff, so needs must.

The cheapest dress she brought me out was £40 and the most expensive £149. I didn't give her a budget. The three dresses I bought were £199 altogether including Coast one and she gave me 15% off discount.

JenniMoo · 09/05/2014 13:11

I wasn't asked for a budget but as it was fairly soon post-baby I said I wasn't wanting to spend too much and she brought quite few sale bits in.

lovingmatleave · 09/05/2014 18:19

okilydokily - would love to hear how you get on, and pass on your tips.. I'm trying not to buy anything for a few months, then go to a personal shopper to get some co-ordinated outfits as I am fed up of having nothing that goes together.

okilydokily · 09/05/2014 22:50

OK - I shall report back tomorrow. It's a bit scary being post-maternity and having to rediscover a "style". I'll see if I can try to get sale items too. I really don't want to spend a fortune.
