Will other kids aged 8 and 11 wear UV suits on a beach holiday?

Not been abroad for 3 summers and my brood are now 11, almost 8 and 6.

The wee one will wear her sister's hand-on happily but is it worth getting UV suits/a rash vest for my 8 year old dd and 11 yo ds?

We're going to S Spain in July.

Thanks

Next do nice ones for older boys.

BikeRunSki · 06/05/2014 21:18

Ds is 5, but in 7-8 clothes. Last year he graduated to a rash vest and board shorts. Both uv resistant. He is very fair skinned, I wouldn't dream of him being on the beach in the sun without some kind of uv suit as well as sunscreen.

Yes ds wore a rash vest (from next I believe) when we were last abroad and he was 8. Just asking really if fashion conscious 11 year olds wear such a thing?

I'll probably get for my dd and not give her an option...

Pumpkin patch had a lovely set reduced to about £10 which i bought online yesterday.

I got it for my 10yr old. She is too fair to go in a swimsuit without me sun creaming her every 10 minutes which is just no fun for anyone.

Boden have sent me a £10 voucher which is kind of them but I'm really not sure my 11yo will wear their rash vest (def not the one with stars on sadly!)

And I don't like the girl option, grrrr.

neither of mine have ever worn them. if they needed to cover up they put a t-shirt on

sometimessunshine · 06/05/2014 21:30

My older DC (13 & 12) both wear rash vests under their wetsuits and then keep them on with their shorts. Maybe look for a surf brand one for your
11yo?

hillyhilly · 06/05/2014 21:30

My 9 yr old has realised she's the only one wearing it usually and would prefer not to.
Out of the question.

tigerdriverII · 06/05/2014 21:31

I think you will seriously struggle with a fashion conscious 11 year old boy. Sloppy t shirt and shorts?

BadRoly · 06/05/2014 21:33

We're in Cornwall and mine very rarely go to the beach without a rashie. They are 12 and 11. The younger 2 (7 & 4) tend to wear the suits. I realise that for most if the year they are also wearing wetsuits but down here, most kids are wearing some sort of UV top.

HandbagAddiction · 06/05/2014 21:35

Check out www.surfdome.com - i use it for all sorts and you will likely pick up some branded stuff - i.e. billabong, o'neill, quicksilver, etc. at VERY reasonable prices. I have dds age 10 and 7, who whilst not particularly fair skinned, love wearing rash vests. It's cool if you can get decent ones cheap and steer away from the 'children's clothes' brands, i.e. Boden.

Artandco · 06/05/2014 21:39

A t shirt is fine. Honestly I think the whole uv suits are a bit ott. Having spent some childhood in Australia, and now with own kids having lived in Dubai/ Oman/ Cyprus etc... It's only ever British children wearing them!

My children are very pale/ typical white British skin, blue eyes, almost white bling hair. They have never burnt without one.

Use suncream where esposed. Don't sit out on the beach in midday sun ( 11-3), use this time to stay in shade/ eat/ rest. Floppy wide brimmed hat protects face. Add a loose casual shirt if you need to walk outside in midday heat. Add t shirt in pool etc if needed, but like I said I would avoid pool etc during midday heat

tigerdriverII · 06/05/2014 21:47

What is a rash vest?

hettie · 06/05/2014 22:06

Hi Art, actually the rash vest thing came from Australia. It may not have been a thing when you were a kid but having recently lived there I would say that nearly all kids wear them. The government had to run successive campaigns in the last 15 years as their skin cancer rates were going through the roof.
DC's would probably find rash vests better than a tshirt which gets clingy when damp? I would 2nd surfdome for cool options

JohnCusacksWife · 06/05/2014 22:08

Personally I've never bought them for my kids. We use good quality, high factor, once a day sun cream and they've never burnt, had red marks etc. for me part of the joy of a sunny holiday is getting some air about our bodies instead of being all bundled up in layers of clothes. Have no idea about the "coolness" or otherwise of them, though......
