My sister is getting married in 6 weeks (13 June) and I am her matron of honour. Just over a week ago I found out that I was unexpectedly pregnant. Because it is unplanned I am not sure of my dates but think I am in my seventh week, so expect to be 3 months pregnant by the date of the wedding.

I really cannot remember how much I was showing at the same time last time around (7 years ago). It is now my second child, I'm 42 and I'm currently a size 12 (if that helps). But my tummy is already looking 'big' - eek!

It's a big wedding and she has a lot of bridesmaids so I thought I could wing it and make a decision closer to the time. I'm not really fussed about being a bridesmaid although she really wants me too (long story, had rows over it), and certainly not keen on being one with a visible bump. But what has really thrown me is that I remember now that I went to a wedding when pregnant the first time. I was only 4 months gone but had a visible bump even in a maxi dress (what I chose to wear).

This is what I am supposed to be wearing.

Hardly forgiving [hmmm]

Can someone with more clarity of thought than me help me through my options??

Have you worked out who you are going to tell and when? I'm sure your sister is a reasonable person, but I can't help of all of the bridzillas we hear about and how they respond to "the limelight being stolen".

Ladies thank you all so much for your advice and dress suggestions. It's a surprise pregnancy, I'm 42 and with first trimester symptoms as well it just feels TOO MUCH to have to think through all of this, so I'm very grateful.

The maternity spanx look great so will definitely be investing in a pair of those.

Re telling people, it is such a difficult one. I have a busy, social May, but don't want to have to tell many before I've had scan. Have told parents, and will need to tell my best friends this weekend as we are away and I they'll guess why I'm not drinking. I wouldn't dream of announcing it on the wedding day, and no, my sister is a bit immature and given my experience when I announced my last pregnancy, her reaction will be unpredictable. Plus I have my other sister to consider who had a recent, difficult miscarriage experience. Trust me, it's fraught (and probably needs a separate thread!) even before I take my own fears and concerns into account.

I think I need to look seriously for an alternative, and hopefully it's something that I can make a decision to buy closer to the time

Thanks again

Firstly, congratulations!

Secondly, realistically, you won't be wearing the planned bridesmaid dress. Even if you dont look obviously pregnant the dress wont fit.

Just to go against the grain - I didn't start to show with number 2 properly until closer to 20 weeks (am 37 so no spring chicken and not at all super fit after ds1)
What I mean is that you could realistically get away with spanx and the first dress, can you get a second one that is returnable? Then you have options.

Sorry meant to say could whatever "bump" you have now be bloating rather than baby?
