Myth? You need 8 glasses of water a day

Marie Claire states, " 8 glasses of water is too much. Given the human stomach is the size of a fist it overloads and puts a strain on your gut. Constantly sipping acts like a diuretic and flushes the body of the vitamins it needs. Guzzling in short bursts can cause kidney strain".
Oh dear, and here was me congratulating myself on my water consumption!
My mother used to say drinking a lot of water stretched your stomach and made you hungrier. I thought she was talking nonsense but was she?

Everyone's potassium and sodium levels are different and you can hang on to excess water and chemicals even with good function. Dilute urine less likely to cause stones and get uti.

No with new kidney was absolutely normal. Without exception my consultants recommend increased water. It is when your kidneys are under par you need less as you can't process it. Not excessive amounts btw and not from plastic bottles

ha!
We laugh at work at all the youngsters permanently gripping water bottles as if we work in the Sahara

Being hydrated plumps skin nothing to do with toxins at all. Lots of dialysis patients look plump skinned as they have excess water in their systems.

I drink about 3 - 4 litres of fluid a day, I always have done - I feel,thirsty if I don't. I look at least 10 years younger than my age.

Kidneys can comfortably cope with 1 litre of fluid an hour.

Tbh if you are drinking and peeing and feel well and not swollen up or feeling shit then you have a lot to be grateful for.

It's pretty much a myth for normal people, although if you're drinking water rather than anything else calorific, and having a glass with each meal to fill you up a bit then it probably will help a bit with weight loss. I think it's sometimes a problem with little old ladies who eat such small amounts that there's less water contained in food.

There is one case of a woman who died on a bonkers excess water drinking diet, and of course lots of inexperienced marathon runners fall into the hyperhydration trap.

I drink 2-3 litres a day. Always have done. I was ID the other day for a 15 movie! ( I'm nearer 30)

My dh and children also drink a fair amount. Dh about the same as me, children less as obv smaller but roughly everyone drinks a glass at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then mid morning, mid afternoon, and evening. For adults that's min 6 large glasses of water, kids 6 small glasses

We are never ill. I wonder if that has anything to do with it? Ds1 is 4, he had toncilitus age 2 but otherwise the most he's had is a slighty running nose for a day or so. Ds2 is 2, he's never even had a sniffle!

If something is up that requires consultant care and individual medical advice, then none of the reasons here apply to you

The consultant said that was the advice for everyone for good kidney function.
