The solid coconut oil that people use

I was in Costco t'other day and saw a big jar of the coconut oil near olive oil , so I'm taking it that it's edible rather than cosmetic.(I didn't check the size/price, I just thought ooh, coconut oil )
Can that be used?

What can it be used for? (Apart from eating, I'm guessing this is to cook things )

How long does it keep for - rancid coconut doesn't sound nice.

I'd try a smaller jar first - where could I get this from? Would Holland & Barrett sell it?

TIA

I have a small jar of boots own one - love it! I do think the cooking one and eating one are the same though.

Doh cooking and cosmetic - excuse wine!

I love it. I bought mine online. You need the extra vigrin, unrefined stuff, so double check as I'm not sure you'd find the quality stuff in the cooking oil section at Costco.

I use mine all over body, hair, in cooking and even used it to oil my bicycle chain once. I put it in the DCs' bath, they try and eat it before it melts!

Hi, have just looked on the label, ours from Holland and Barratt.
for use on and in your body, stated on the front.

Directions: use in cooking and salad dressings, as a spread or in smoothies.

use for cleansing, moisturising, hair conditioning, massage oil.
I use it mixed with turmeric as a beauty product.
My dh has a skin condition and he uses it to mix with other things for medicinal purposes.

It's really great stuff and so go for you inside and out.

I have got really cheap coconut oil in Superdrug to use as a body moisturiser.

I get edible coconut oil from the usual supermarkets, it's about £6 for 300ml and is usually kept near the other cooking oils or by the allergy type foods. This can also be used as a moisturiser.

I use it as oil to fry foods. I put it in my coffee. You can use it as a mouthwash (oil pulling).

Holland & Barrett do sell it but at a higher price than the supermarkets. I'm sure you can get it off the internet cheaply and in large quantities.

I have the holland and barratt stuff to cook and also for cleansing and moisturising.

Any old coconut oil will do!

OneLittleLady · 04/05/2014 23:42

Asian food shops sell coconut oil really cheaply. it's where I get mine when I need it. DP uses it on his scalp every so often and it really helps clear up the sore patches and subsequent flakes that he gets

Scarletohello · 04/05/2014 23:46

It needs to be Virgin because of the way it's processed. Unrefined is not edible!

Scousadelic · 04/05/2014 23:47

I get mine from the World Foods section of the supermarket. It is the same thing but way cheaper than the one in the health foods section

I use it in cooking, for moisturising or makeup removal and I add a spoonful to coffee in place of milk or cream

WandaDoff · 04/05/2014 23:55

I usually buy this one with my online shop, best price I've found so far Smile

I tend to use it on my hair as a deep conditioning treatment, as a moisturiser, & I've used it a lot in baking instead of butter. Yum.

coconut oil superdrug, never used it for culinary though

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/05/2014 00:39

Scarlett,I think you have that wrong. Unrefined and refined are edible but the 'good stuff' is taken out of the refined stuff. Both can be used. Either is fine for cosmetic use.
