Help me find this perfect jacket

I'm looking for the impossible probably - in fact don't really have an idea in my mind of what it will look like but know what it needs to do! Anyway I'm looking for a jacket which is casual but could go with smart outfits. Quite warm and waterproof but doesn't look as if I'm about to go on a 10 mile hike. Washable, and which goes with both trousers and skirts. Any ideas?

I think a mac fits the bill quite well unless you go for something like this , which might be a bit frumpy.

Sorry, sorry sorry, was posting request just as packing car to go away so have only just had time to check now after our arrival. Thank you for your suggestions. Mrs Badger - you are closest to the mark but something with a little more get up and go perhaps?

Don't worry - I'm terrible for starting threads and going off to do something else, or else I end up refreshing every 5 seconds hoping for replies and wailing 'why does no-one love me!'

Practical coats are v hard to find as anything that's actually waterproof looks like a hiking jacket and anything vaguely attractive lets in the rain. Millets had one in their sale in a passable stone colour, but it was very much the same deal as the first Boden jacket Malory posted - hooded and fleece-lined but not what you'd call stylish.

The only other thing I can think of are those trenches / macs from, erm, cheaper places (mine was from Additions when it was still Argos) that are actually made of rubber/plastic stuff and so are a) truly waterproof and b) v warm. They can be a bit shiny though - DH calls mine my boyband mac because it's slightly reminiscent of 90s Boyzone outfits...
Can't find anywhere that's doing them at the moment but will keep my eyes open - Primark, Peacocks, Matalan etc all worth a try.

YOu might find one in ZARA, they have fitted short coats that are waterproof. They also having a lining that you can take out. In black and beige

MrsBadger · 29/08/2006 09:25

dh whisked me out of Zara at great speed on Saturday - will have to go back now

beetroot · 29/08/2006 09:28

they have some great stuff at the moment. I bought two pairs of boots. and their jeans are a really good fit. and the coat is going to be fantastic for winter

waterfalls · 29/08/2006 09:41

this maybe?

CheesyFeet · 29/08/2006 09:45

Some nice macs in Dorothy Perkins

here

Loving the red mac myself but am large of nork so can't do double breasted. Thinking about the £30 one (fourth one in) instead.

MrsBadger · 29/08/2006 09:49

all v nice but all cotton hence not waterproof...

waterfalls · 29/08/2006 09:52

Thank you for your suggestions. I went into Primark and have bought a hip length jacket in dk brown - quite puffy with high collar (v cosy) for the unbelievable bargain of £8.00. Now, I feel I need to get another one which is a bit posher and perhaps more formal!!! Cheesyfeet - the Dorothy Perkins ones look great - esp belted mac's, so will have a look next time I'm at the shops. Again, thanks for all your very stylish help!!!
