Scalp help please

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/05/2014 11:59

Horrible, dry, flaky scalp but no dandruff. What can I try next please?

Currently using the Body Shop Ginger. It's nice to use and my hair likes it but it has made no difference to my scalp at all.
T Gel is okay but doesn't really sort my scalp out and my hair hates it.
Have also tried:
the L'Oreal one that people rave about on here - no difference at all
Head and Shoulders - ditto
Cradle cap shampoo - okay
Eucerin - no difference
E45 shampoo - no difference
Various others.

Help please!

Have you been to the GP? You might need a prescription shampoo - I was prescribed one a while back and still have to use it every now and again but it works a treat.

This was after years of using T-Gel, Vosene, etc. Turns out I had dermatitis all along.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/05/2014 12:06

Not seen GP no. Need to go for another reason but tbh I rarely go, and when I do it's pretty much a waste of time.

My DS has really flakey scalp issues
I bought him T-Gel and it made the skin on his face really dry and irritated.

I biught him some Boots shampoo (Hair Expert or something - cream bottle, navy lid, sensitive and dandruff types to try)

It has made a huge difference to his hair (though washing a bit more often would help , DS ) Hmm

Just bought some Sebamed Daily Use (pH 5.5 ) from Costco, I'll do a report back once he's tried it,

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/05/2014 12:41

We have a history of psoriasis in the family so I reckon with DS it's that.
I'm going down the gentle route with his scalp rather than a trip to the GP who would probably prescribe something coal-tar like

The flakes might be from a fungal imbalance - it causes some types of dandruff - the fungus naturally present in your skin overgrows in a damp/alkaline environment.

It gets worse usually if you use a very alkaline shampoo (this is what triggers mine), so use a pH balanced one if you can or rinse your hair/scalp in something mildly acidic eg diluted cider vinegar.

And try to avoid eating a lot of sugar. Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide so shampoos with it in can help as well.

I've had scalp psoriasis for about 30 years and the ONLY thing that has worked is Aveda Scalp Benefits shampoo/conditioner/scalp treatment. I was unable to wear dark colours and the itch was driving me crazy. 3 months later I hardly have any flakes at all. It's very expensive but worth every penny to me (works out less if you buy the big litre bottles). I saw it recommend on here and after trying lots of prescription treatments and shampoos from Boots it was my last ditch attempt.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/05/2014 13:02

Aveda is one of the ones I've tried. It didn't help my scalp much, and made my hair really greasy.

There's no dandruff at all, so it's not that. Any recs for PH balanced shampoos?

Thanks everybody, too. :)

Haven't tried the Boots Expert stuff for a few years, so might give that a go.

Selsun was the only thing that ever worked for me. I tried pretty much everything available til someone recommended this and it worked first time. It does stink a bit though, so best to use it one evening before bed then wash again in the morning with normal shampoo.

As I've got older, I've had less of a problem with a flaky scalp and use Jason dandruff shampoo about once a month just to keep any flakes at bay. I have very dark hair so flakes are obvious on me.

Dead Sea Salt Shampoo is what you need - it's fab and no SLS or silicone too I think. Hang on and I'll find some.

CrazyLadyAtNumber31 · 03/05/2014 14:25

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B000KU934E?pc_redir=1398883863&robot_redir=1
This is it on Amazon.

CrazyLadyAtNumber31 · 03/05/2014 14:34

My sister had really itchy, red and sore scalp - she even had open sores on her scalp after colouring her hair and I got her the Dead Sea Salt one. Her scalp cleared up within a week. I use it now and my previously thin, lank, greasy hair is much fuller and healthier looking - I presume because no silicon or SLS.

Pumpkinette · 03/05/2014 14:43

I would say give SLS free shampoo a go. Body shop do trial size bottles of thier SLS free shampoos - rainforest rescue range (the body shop ginger one is not SLS free)

DH has a flaky scalp and he can use this without getting a flare up. He also pinches my L'Occitaine hand cream for his scalp when it feels really itchy as its the only thing that will soothe his skin.

MyrtleDove · 03/05/2014 15:19

I had an itchy, flaky scalp for years and it turned out to be an SLS/sulfate sensitivity. I use Palmers olive oil shampoo and Dr Organic (from Holland & Barrett) argan oil conditioner.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/05/2014 15:20

Thanks all. Will go either to H&B or to Body Shop, or get the Dead Sea one (although I have tried that before - can't have been too much of a revelation for me, as I didn't repurchase but seem to remember it being quite nice).

Bumble and Bumble do one and a spray in tonic that worked for me. Naked Neroli is also good. You can get both from Boots.

quirkychick · 03/05/2014 15:33

I use one from Organics Colour Systems which I get from my hairdresser called "Sooth Plus". On phone so can't link.

There is a shampoo, spray and conditioner. I only use the shampoo and spray now but my scalp has stopped flaking for the first time ever since using it. Pretty sure it's sls free too.

whereisshe · 04/05/2014 13:43

I use this, it's very good for grumpy scalps.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/05/2014 14:55

Selsun if the Loreal one doesn't work.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/05/2014 14:56

Proceed with caution with the Boots experts one-made my scalp a 100x worse!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/05/2014 16:00

I guess everyone is sensitive to different things too Dame - I tried the Dr Organics Vit E shampoo ( Holland & Barrett) and it left my hair matted and greasy,

DS responded really well to Boots Expert but not T-Gel.
Sainsburys Apple Shampoo (huge 1 litre pump bottle) works well on him (I think it's quite watery so it rinses out well )

Baby shampoo leaves my scalp really itchy (I'm sure people think I have fleas when I've used it) Sad

quirkychick · 04/05/2014 16:11

I also use dr organics argan oil conditioning treatment. I have got very dry, thick, curly hair so nothing will make it greasy. Not even oil.

Sooth plus has lots of stuff like tea tree oil. Although I get it from the hairdresser I'm sure you can get it online too.
