how to fade home hair dye without buying a kit ? any natural ways?

couldn't afford hairdresser
Dyed at home.. way too dark
I know you can get kits that strip the dye off but I just want it a less intense version, I like the colour, just not this heavy
Since doing it i've washed four times (on different days that is!) using really hot water, and washing up liquid. Not made any noticeable difference.
I can't get to the shops and as I said.. i don't want to remove the whole colour . Just fade it. Is there anything in the home i could use e.g. kitchen remedies??

Beetroot juice?

SkivingAgain · 01/05/2014 19:20

It may have been my imagination, but I tried the mn tip of conditioning my hair before shampooing it and I think my colour faded a bit. Worth a try?

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 01/05/2014 19:22

Joke, I'm not sure there is much you can do actually.

It will fade eventually

Bluebell79 · 01/05/2014 20:22

Swimming fades my colour and Pantene buildup remover shampoo. Have heard head and shoulders does too.

BikeRunSki · 01/05/2014 20:24

I think Tomato Ketchup is supposed to work.

napoleonsnose · 01/05/2014 20:30

Drastic - washing up liquid followed by LOADS of conditioner
Gentler - Pantene clarifying shampoo or Head and Shoulders

Source - own unfortunate home hair dye incident!

alltoomuchrightnow · 01/05/2014 20:40

thanks! have both head and shoulders and ketchup here
do you rub in ketchup onto dry hair first?

Baby shampoo allegedly works because its alkaline. It's supposed to open the cuticle of the hair which "encorages" fade.

MrsCocoa · 01/05/2014 23:35

OP, hope by now you are sorted?

If not, someone here recommended having good results with mashing up those big soluble Vit C on a previous thread. On the basis that my hair was already in poor condition and a commercial product would at least have some kind of conditioning treatment I ended up using this: www.dgjorganics.com/products/category/hair-colour-remover
It worked pretty well. I didn't do the strand test thing but think if you want to control the end result you really should!

Hope it works out.

alltoomuchrightnow · 01/05/2014 23:58

going to do it tomorrow but it will have to be with whatever I can find in the home
ahha i think DP might have some soluble Vit C somewhere

I think my hairdresser told me that Head and Shoulders takes colour down a notch or two

Trillions · 02/05/2014 00:37

Ketchup takes green tones from swimming pool water out of blonde hair. Don't think it fades hair dye though!

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/05/2014 00:40

i think i'll do the H&C and lots of conditioner. can't believe we've ran out of washing up liquid here :-(

Vosene is meant to be good.
Mix any of the shampoos with baking soda. It really strips. Use loadsa conditioner after!

Pumpkinette · 02/05/2014 10:14

Any anti dandruff shampoo. Baby shampoo. Washing up liquid. Swimming shampoo. Dettol soap (bar) and wash with water as hot as you can tolerate - warm water fades hair colour faster than cool water.

CeliaFate · 02/05/2014 11:05

Heat will remove colour. Wash your hair every day and blow dry it, the colour should fade.

Suzannewithaplan · 02/05/2014 11:08

Vegetable oil, comb it in leave for 30 mins to soak and wash out with head and shoulders.
Swimming in a chlorinated pool also works

Chocotrekkie · 02/05/2014 11:11

Washing up liquid worked on mine - wash it about 3 times and then loads of conditioner as many times a day as you can.

Took the bright red down to auburny in my mousy brown hair in about 6 sets of washes.

VenusDeWillendorf · 02/05/2014 11:13

I second baby shampoo- strips it right out - makes you wonder what's in it -is it safe for poor babe's head!!

TereseaGreen · 02/05/2014 11:56

Head and shoulders worked for me. Lather rinse and repeat a few milliontimes.

alltoomuchrightnow · 02/05/2014 16:07

no baby shampoo here. left H&S on for an hour on my fringe (i.e. the worst offender). then two washes with more of it. Waiting for it to dry but does seem a bit lighter

Seriously the Vit c tablets crushed & mixed with clarifying/cleansing shampoo really does work, google it/you tube it. I've done it several times without fail!
