Mid home hair dye - help!

Ok so I looked in the mirror and my hair had got so dark & boring with increasing grey ones... So I bought some hair dye.

Did the patch test and strand test yesterday and all ok. Strand was from darkest bit near neck. Realise I should have done a bit from up top now...

So it's 45 mins in and looking a bit orange. With an alarming lighter patch on my parting. The question is, do I keep going and hope it all lightens further? Or wash it out before my hair falls out? What if it stays orange?

It's Nice & Easy Summer Blonde 2 and I am usually mid-dark golden blonde. I've had highlights but not for over a year.

Any advice gratefully received!

How long is it supposed to be on for?
I would probably leave it on for specified time, then see what it looks like.
Home hair dye should come with a hat to wear when you have to run back to shop to get a darker colour. Hope you don't have to do that!

It said up to 45 mins but you're supposed to work out your own best time from strand test. Mine took the full 45 mins to make a noticeable difference but that was on the darkest bit of my hair underneath not the lighter bits on top iyswim so I am not sure whether this is the best it's going to get or leave it on longer.

In the hairdresser my hair usually takes longer than average to take highlights so I thought maybe I should risk leaving it beyond the max.

Mm I would probably rinse off now. It's maybe affecting your highlights and roots differently, and leaving it for longer won't even it up, it'll probably just damage your hair.

Perhaps you should have concentrated on the roots for 25 minutes, then combed it through for the rest of the time.

Well I left it about an hour and after washing it still looked quite orange but once dry it's really nice! Definitely still has golden tones rather than the cool blonde of my dreams but for £5 it is not bad, a lot lighter than before and some really fair highlights which lift it. A moderate success...

Now shall I try the Mumsnet haircut?!

Excellent - glad you're happy with it.
As tempting as the Mumsnet haircut is, I wouldn't.
I cut myself a fringe once and thought I looked shit hot. Looking back at the photos, I looked like Ricky Gervais' Derek.
Quit while you're ahead!
