Handwashing bras

This is probably a silly question but I was just wondering how you wash your bras? I have a large chest and have always just put my bras in the washing machine at a 40 degree wash with other clothes but they do come out with the straps twisted and I know that this is not good for them.

I have this week bought myself two new bras at a cost of £30 each! I was professionally fitted at Bravissimo and am very pleased with the bras and obviously want to keep them in good shape for as long as possible.

So do you hand wash your bras and if so do you physically wash them by hand? I do have a hand wash feature on my washing machine but it seems silly to put it on for only a few items. Thanks Albaba.

I put mine in a padded net bag that is cup shaped ( tuck both cups inside each other, fold the straps in and zip up.
My bras are 36D so only one fits each bag,

(And it stops the risk of underwiring escaping into the machine)
I do a 30c colour wash and they are fine

Oops forgot Blush

Bags from Lakeland Limited

Clargo55 · 27/04/2014 17:28

Yep I also use zip up bra bags from Lakeland. I always fasten the hook and eye thing on the back up before washing too.

AnythingNotEverything · 27/04/2014 17:30

I hand wash in Woolite or similar. Not as regularly as most of you, mind. I dry them quickly on a clean tea towels then leave them to dry nearish (but not on) a radiator or on the line.

I ought to get one of those bags ...

starfishmummy · 27/04/2014 17:35

I handwash. I keep a bottle of a gentle washing liquid in the bathroom for that purpose, and then hang to dry over the bath

ggirl · 27/04/2014 17:36

I just wash in sink with handwash liquid and squeeze dry on towel and hang up.
I wear primadonna bras at £70 each and I did put one in normal wash by mistake, I think it shrunk a little bit around the chest strap so am not risking that again.

I have 36 JJs and always shove everything together in a 40degree wash. I've never handwashed. (with 4 kids don't have time) and all my bras come from bravissimo.
They say hand wash them but you'll never get them really properly clean imo. I did have one bra were the wire wore though the underside of the cup and I got told off by Bravissimo for not hand washing !!! it was relatively new and they very kindly replaced it. The replacement has been machine washed (again shoved in with everything else and no special treatment) and it has lasted YEARS and YEARS. So I think it was a faulty bra not my washing style.
I have the odd wire poke up but never jammed a washing machine with one.

SorrelForbes · 27/04/2014 19:20

I wash all mine on a 40 degree cycle inside a net laundry bag.

thevelvetoverground · 27/04/2014 19:24

I mean to hand wash and I often do when I first get them new but then I resort to throwing them in the machine.

When I do hand wash I put some detergent in hot water in the sink and then soak the bra. Nice woman in Rigby and Pellar told me you really don't need to scrub it lots. I swoosh it about a bit and use a nail scrubber thing on the wires, where it can get a bit sweaty (nice). Again, R&P recommended this. Then I hang them up in the bash on a wall rack thing and blast them with the shower head to rinse.

ilovepowerhoop · 27/04/2014 19:29

I use a net laundry bag and wash at 40 degrees with other clothes

thenightsky · 27/04/2014 19:33

I do them in the machine on the quick wash 30%. Only use a tiny amount of woolite liquid and never use conditioner as it rots the lycra.

I dry them on a clothes horse in the garage or on the line outside.

thenightsky · 27/04/2014 19:33

30%?? I mean 30 degrees!

NearTheWindymill · 27/04/2014 19:45

Love the sound of the Lakeland bag. I usually bung mine in the machine - white one's on a light wash, black ones on a dark wash. The white ones could remain a slightly better colour - but I still get a good four years out of them.

rainreversal · 27/04/2014 19:47

I handwash mine, usually just use any liquid detergent around, hand soap or shower gel. Should probably get proper hand washing detergent! I leave them to soak in hand-hot soapy water, agitate them a bit, rinse and squeeze out some of the water and peg them over the bath.

Fairylea · 27/04/2014 19:50

I'm a 30gg and buy all my bras from bravissimo (or the same brands on ebay) and I always just bung them in the wash like everything else at 40 degrees. Never had any problems... touch wood anyway! They have lasted for ages and ages.

Bunbaker · 28/04/2014 21:38

I never handwash mine. I just stick them in the washer. White ones go in a white wash, and skin coloured go in a coloured wash. The wires in mine never get detached. How does that happen?

gamerchick · 28/04/2014 21:41

You're supposed to hand wash them as they don't like heat.. but then you're supposed to buy new ones every 3 month or something and who does that? Grin

goodasitgets · 28/04/2014 21:42

I handwash... Until the guarantee runs out (6 months I think with bravissimo) Wink

rookiemater · 28/04/2014 21:44

I handwash most of the time, but for light coloured ones then I bung them in the wash every month or so to supplement the handwashes.

Coveredinweetabix · 28/04/2014 21:51

The woman in Bravissimo told me she had a bottle of Woolite or similar in the shower & washed & rinsed the previous day's bra whilst in the shower & then left it in there to drip dry.

Mintyy · 28/04/2014 21:54

Astonished at the number of handwashing devotees!

I never have done and never will do. They go in the machine in a net laundry bag. But then I wouldn't ever spend £70 on a bra, so it figures that I'm not so precious about mind Grin.

Pandsbear · 28/04/2014 22:07

I hand wash in sink in hand wash liquid, then rinse, then roll in towel to blot excess water then hang on washing line. I do have about 15 bras though so only do them every couple of weeks. I don't mind the 20 mins it takes to do this to keep them in good condition. But then I also don't mind hand washing woollens etc!

thevelvetoverground · 29/04/2014 19:20

The thing that worries me most about putting bras in the machine is the wire dining out - I've had to call the repair man before. Oh how I Blush when he pulled out a J cup size wire!

Would the net laundry bag help with this do you think?

ilovepowerhoop · 29/04/2014 19:27

yes a bag should help stop the wire from getting caught in the workings of the machine
