As per title, I often 'smell' other people (eek I hope that doesn't sound too odd!!!) and wonder what washing products can really make your lovely clothes smell fab.

I tend to use powders that don't make my clothes smell too much, I fear it would clash with my perfume.

stardusty5 · 26/04/2014 21:10

I love the Persil colour capsules as i love the smell of them. I share your love of freshly washed clothes smells but i've come to think that you soon become resistant to whichever one you use.

I tried being really loyal to one forca while to see if the smell would get stronger as it got more ingrained (!Hmm) but i havent noticed much difference.

Katisha · 26/04/2014 21:12

I loathe all fabric conditioner smells and think people don't realise how synthetic and overpowering they are. Nothing better than clothes with no smell IMO.

TheJumped · 26/04/2014 21:13

I like Lenor Infusions - the Poison of fabric conditioners.

Bearleigh · 26/04/2014 21:17

I also loathe the cheap smells of fabric conditioners, but need to use it occasionally. I now use Boots conditioner for sensitive skin which is unscented and add lavender oil.

The small of Woolite is quite nice, as is Persil non-bio.

EyelinerQueen · 26/04/2014 21:18

I'm with TheJumped.

Lenor Infusions Gold Orchid or Ruby Jasmine.

They both leave clothes (and bedding) smelling gorgeous and are not at all overpowering. Lovely Smile .

itsnothingoriginal · 26/04/2014 21:19

I buy Fairy when it's on offer as I can't stand some of the really highly perfumed ones. I bought a Bold jasminey smelling one a few months ago and immediately regretted it - far too strong!

Otherwise I get Waitrose Essential stuff or Aldi Almat which are also inoffensive and the washing just smells clean!

DarylDixonsDarlin · 26/04/2014 23:29

Ariel Colour or Co-op Woolens wash yes really for washing, Ecover or Fairy for softener. I often get compliments on this. And it's not overpowering either, just a nice clean smell.

Line dry if possible (though we dry stuff/air it off in warm conservatory as well if rainy). The most helpful thing I have found is to keep laundry WELL away from the cooking etc., the number of people who don't realise they smell of chips or onions, and yet they spend a fortune on washing powder trying to make their clothes smell nice! (Also you need to make sure your machine is clean, mouldy machines leave very unpleasant aroma on clothes!) I know I should move to Housekeeping instead of S&B but I like it here

WildThong · 27/04/2014 00:11

I'm like you op, I enjoy the smell of freshly laundered clothes. The new Lenor Topaz and Magnolia is lovely, fresh and perfumed but not overpowering.

JohnCusacksWife · 27/04/2014 00:18

I love the smell of well laundered clothes/bedding but I've never been able to master the art. My mum's washing always smells wonderful and mine smells of nothing. But when i ask her she always seems to just use the same bog standard stuff that I do. I've no idea how she does it.....

StephenKatz · 27/04/2014 07:55

The only brand I'm loyal to is Comfort Exhilirations. It's just the bee's knees of softener. I just use the cheapo 2 in 1 washing powder from Aldi then I get the bottles of Comfort from wherever has them on offer when I need to stock up (they're always on offer somewhere, use mysupermarket to find out where)

I also find the smell is at its best when I dry things on the radiator, rather than the tumble dryer, I don't know why!

I must say however, I am a terrible Mumsnetter. Not only do I love the strongest smelling softener their is, and dry it on my raidiators, I also don't do much line drying in the summer because I hate the horrible outdoor smell! So maybe don't listen to me Grin

Deathraystare · 27/04/2014 08:43

Persil non bio capsules then either Waitrose or Tesco own or whoevers (Lenor??)tumble dry sheets (conditioner).

hollyisalovelyname · 27/04/2014 09:46

M&S Vanilla Clouds fabric conditioner is scent heaven.

Breezy1985 · 27/04/2014 10:07

I use Ariel and Lenor gold infusions, smells lovely.

PunchHouse · 27/04/2014 10:32

Shock @ horrid outdoor smell

My Mum's laundry always smells fabulous. She uses Fairy, I believe, and dries everything outside.

No fabric conditioner will ever beat a fresh line-dried smell. Unless you live next to a sewage works, perhapsWink

whereisthewitch · 27/04/2014 10:35

Blue comfort all the way or the lenor with febreeze. ...I can't use comfort exhilarations as it gives me thrush Blush

whereisthewitch · 27/04/2014 10:37

Oh and use bio powder instead of capsules or liquid! I use bold infusions!

HappyAsEyeAm · 27/04/2014 10:38

I love the smell of the bog standard blue Lenor. I buy whatever is on offer, but thats my favourite. I associate it with smelling clean. I buy Imperial Leather soap for the same reason.

I cannot stand clean clothes smelling of something. A friend washed ds's tshirt for me and I had to wash it 4 further times before I could get the heavy smell off it.

If I wash clothes on a 30 min economy wash, I don't get much smell, regardless of what products I use. If I do the 90 minute wash, clothes come out smelling beautiful.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 27/04/2014 12:52

I use halo sports wash liquid which does not smell of anything but gets out the sweaty armpit smell that DS's tops still smelt of faintly when ironed. I loved the yellow lenor or comfort that lasted 7 days or something, when you rubbed your clothes it used to smell like opal fruits but they don't do it now sadly. I sometimes put a couple of drops of zoflora twilight garden disinfectant in the final rinse which gives a subtle perfumed smell. I love the smell of dettol so use that instead of fabric softener when I wash towels and love the smell of line dried washing.

PigletJohn · 27/04/2014 13:00

Change the brand every few weeks. You clothes smell of it but your snout has become acclimatised so you aren't aware of the scent.

Obv do hot service washes with washing soda crystals as well, to clean the sludge out of the machine.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 27/04/2014 13:02

Fairy
Or Sainsburys own orange blossom conditioner which is much cheaper and lovely.
