Got my hair cut for the first time in over a year and it looks fecking awful. Awkward length at my shoulders so it flicks out and then messy layers springing up everywhere. It's like a really bad Rachel. What the hell can I do? Washing it this morning hasn't helped. Am I just going to have to tie it up until it grows out?

Have you tried straightening it a bit? Does anybody else think it looks awful or just you? It might just need a nit of getting used to tbh.

burnishedsilver · 26/04/2014 10:20

Maybe get a bit more off the length to tie it together better.

itsbetterthanabox · 26/04/2014 10:24

Go to a better hairdressers and ask them to fix it.

CleanAllOfTheThings · 26/04/2014 10:28

Straightening hasn't helped. I'm gonna have to go somewhere else I think! This haircut was meant to make me feel like less of a frumpy mum ffs.

Clean I am you.

I had a long all one length bob (got bored) vcut into layers with a heavier fringe and feathered round my face. Looked gorgeous when it was cut and blow dried.
When I did it ( I had to resort to straighteners) I looked scruffy, Mumsy and like a bad cartoon character (or something out of Benny Hill when he's a woman Sad )

So, it's gone
Cropped.

Love it.
I have good cheekbones (preen) and an oval face.
Only downside is I need to wear make-up and proper earring or I look a bit 'blokey'.

burnishedsilver · 26/04/2014 11:39

Sorry to hear that. Its so disappointing when you build yourself up for a change and it's not done right. In theory you're supposed to go back to the same hairdresser and get then to fix it for free but that's a risk when you've no faith in them. I'd go somewhere else.

CleanAllOfTheThings · 26/04/2014 12:58

You are braver than me, 70! I do have good cheek bones when I'm not carrying excess baby weight but not sure a really short cut would suit me. Would probably be better than this though. Might try playing with the tongs late.

Definitely not going back to the same place!

CuntyBunty · 26/04/2014 13:06

Could you put some clips in to pin the sides back a bit?
I love a "Rachel" still to this day and have had a long version since their 90s with various adjustments

As long as it's more mushroom than bell-end, you'll be fine.

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 13:07

Definitely pixie it. What shape face do you have? Do you have a large, average or small forehead and how are you fixed chin wise? Grin

There is a pixie shape to suit most people.

CleanAllOfTheThings · 26/04/2014 14:13

It certainly makes me feel like a bellend Grin

Heart shaped face, pointy chin and quite a sizeable forehead. I've got a full side swept fringe, which I do think suits me! I'm just a bit podgy at the moment though so not sure if short will just emphasise the fact?! Willing to be persuaded though!

OP posts:
Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 14:19

A good pixie will flatter. If you have a heart shaped face a long side swept fringe is good when combined with a large forehead but keep it close to the sides of the head with longer layers over the crown for a more flattering/face thinning look if you are feeling podgy.

LadySybilLikesCake · 26/04/2014 14:22

Could you get it cut again?

I'm thinking of having this cut.

I had mine cut too short, just above shoulder & hated it. Look too middle aged mumsy. Have always straightened it too. But got a gift of one of those Babylis curl things & when it's curled it looks really nice & my hair is really straight normally & difficult to curl.

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 14:34

Something like this but a bit messier is what I'm trying to describe
here

LadySybilLikesCake · 26/04/2014 14:37

I had my hair cut that short when I was 18-24. It's hard work as it needs gunk and styling every day or else it looks like a mess.

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 14:39

Doesn't all hair need styling everyday? My hair takes five minutes to dry and style so not a biggy everyday.

LadySybilLikesCake · 26/04/2014 14:45

It took longer to style short hair as the gunk that had been slapped on it to keep it tidy the day before, mixed in with a crazy nights sleep resulted in chunks which stuck up in the air etc. I had to wash it, dry it, style it la, da, da. With longer hair you can use straighteners or whatever, whack some hairspray on and it's done. Wash every couple of days (I'm a slattern).

Sicaq · 26/04/2014 19:19

You sound like you would suit a 20's style Louise Brooks bob; that would also cut out all the layers so you grow it out more stylishly if you wanted.

(wonders why "Pixie cut!" is always the default MN advice of late. Other haircuts exist!)

Milmingebag · 26/04/2014 19:31

There are MANY variations of pixie cut.....

I think that the idea that you 'need' long hair to look 'feminine' is now recognised for the croc it is - hence all the recommendations. It's probably a confidence thing too that when you are happy in your skin you can pull it off with ease.

1920's bobs can be a hassle too because they go all kinky when slept on so they need washing and drying everyday to look good. Can veer into WI territory too if too safe a cut.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/04/2014 19:41

Mine is much easier to style now than it was when it was long. It takes five minutes, at most.

DachshundGirl · 26/04/2014 20:31

I cut my hair into a pixie cut. But although I definitely enjoy having short hair it just doesn't seem to sit right on me. It does only take a few minutes to style but I do have to wash it every morning, whereas when I had longer hair I could just throw it up into a pony tail.

Sicaq · 26/04/2014 21:15

Fair enough Milmingebag! I'm probably biased towards the blunt bob as it works well on my wavy hair. Not suitable for everyone, I agree.

I rarely see anyone with a pixie cut in real life though. I can imagine it being high-maintenance.
