Iffy highlights

LoveSardines · 20/04/2014 19:58

Background: Hair = natural blonde quite fair, I've had a few highlights over the years, think once a year or every 2 years, subtle, so only had it done maybe 6 times in my life.

What happened: Had them done, asked to go a bit blonder as bored. Was OK but subtle colour and a bit stripey around the parting.

So: Went to another hairdresser and said more more blonde please and I'm not keen on this stripey vibe.

Now: Have kind of some super-blonde bits and while it's fine from about 2 inches down (where the old roots were) it's too stripey on top and some is mega white and a bit of an odd colour.

Problem: Not keen and am VERY bored and feeling a bit reckless. Also having just done £££ on 2 different hairdressers I am not keen on going to yet another one!!!

Question: What will happen if I put one of those Boots box nice n easy or whatever things on it? Will that tone the too-light bits down a bit and even it out on the stripey bits? Will it go weird and all fall out? Any other suggestions?

I have never done a box-thing before and am really quite a novice at hair dye / bleaching so am probably making all the mistakes most people make at 20. I am however 40 Grin

Any ideas or warnings? TIA Smile

Hey Lovesardines

I have been training to be a hairdresser for the past 2 years. They should have prewarned you that there would be colour variation.

You are within your rights to go back to the hairdressers and for them to do a colour correction. They might put low lights in to blend the blonde.

If you put a box colour over it now there will still be colour variation im afraid.

Sorry, there's never an easy option with colouring hair im afraid!

Thanks for posting Muffalo Smile

I think I'd be too embarrassed to go back TBH, I know that's a cop-out buy I already told them I wasn't happy with one place IYSWIM and I was probably a bit vague as I don't have much experience to know what to ask for.

If I do a box thing might that tone down some of the brighter bits? I could probably live with the stripeyness. It won't make it go green or anything?

I had highlights that were half grown out ,and I put a nice and easy on in a very light brown which went a little dark at first but then things settled down. I was pleased with the result, you couldn't see where the lights had been and I was almost back to my natural mousey colour. I guess I was lucky Smile

ask them to put a toner on the highlights, i've used niceneasy over highlights and it looked good at first but it pretty much ruins your hair after a while

Thank you all for the advice. It is all good. I am feeling a bit reckless though and want to run to boots and get an exciting box of dye and do that. Will I regret it? I read on other threads to get lighter than your color as they come up dark. Maybe dark would be a change though? Like I say feeling reckless. I am going to mess it up and be met with a horrified silence at work tomorrow aren't I!!i

I did the box thing and it has toned down the mad bright bits and also evened out the line where my old roots were. Phew! Am a happy and very relieved person right now!

Thanks all Smile

What brand of box dye did you use OP and what shade? Just out of interest, as your result from hairdresser sounds very much how mine ends up annoyingly often! Smile

LoveSardines · 21/04/2014 21:25

It was this john freida 9N

The only thing was that all the threads I looked at said boxes come out a lot darker than the picture. I wanted to go a bit darker (for a laugh ?!) and so got one close to the colour it is usually. It came out the colour on the box, not darker at all! Which is fine, and good from a product accuracy point of view - but worth mentioning I guess given what I've read about other brands Smile

Also I probably did a pretty shite job of applying it, as I've never done it before and was a bit wary, and it came out even and fine. So another positive.

I have nothing to compare it to though so bear that in mind Grin

Thanks for link Smile Glad you're happy with it now, having stripey hair is rubbish and I know exactly what you mean about having created a scenario where you can't face going back!
