I gave up cigarettes a week ago, since then my already dry skin has got so much worse. My make up now looks patchy at best and i seem to havel red spots almost like a rash under cheeks.

Any advise welcome. Budget is tight.

Marking place. I get really dry skin around my eyes this time of year

Neal's Yard products are so rich and non greasy. I love their stuff.

I'm always on here saying this but I find oil works best, especially if your skin is sensitive too. I've used coconut, wheatgerm, almond and I'm trying grapeseed at the moment - they've all worked well and they don't irritate my skin like a lot of creams do.

Eucerin! Just wonderful stuff.

I would drink loads and loads of wáter.

Do you think it is possible it is toxins coming out? I gave up booze a couple of months ago and the first month my skin went to pot, then was all lovely! I drank masses of wáter to flush everything out.

Well done on the giving up, that is my next aim!

oohnewshoes · 19/04/2014 18:09

Floisme can I ask how you use the oil. Is it to cleanse, moisturise or both?

hoppergraas yes. I think alot of it is toxins, I do agree I need to drink more water. It so hard though.

Dry or dehydrated? This might help. They're similar but different and I suspect you might be dehydrated if it's a sudden change. I didn't realise I was dehydrated not dry and once I did, and tried different things, I saw big changes in my skin.

Hyaluronic acid helps. Try to find it in moisturisers, serums etc. Hydraluron (you can buy it from Boots) is great for me.

Drinking lots and lots of water should help too. I really notice the difference on my skin.

Clarins blue orchid oil at night instead of or just before moisturiser had also become a necessary product for me. I ran out a week or so ago and haven't repurchased yet - skin looks worse, and I need to buy it soon!

It was the patchy make up that made me think dehydration BTW - that's not really a dry skin thing.

Re dry skin, body shop camomile cleansing butter and Vitamin E night cream are both lovely (I too am dry, but the discovery of the additional dehydration was the key to great skin). Now the 4 products I mentioned here and in previous post make my aged, late 30s skin look very clear and lovely and younger than my age.

I suffer from excema on my face and use bephathen on the most dry bits at night. I use vasaline essential moisture for the day. Any 'fancy' cream just makes me go scaley and red.

Sorry for not replying sooner, op, I didn't spot your question. Yes, I use oil for both cleansing and moisturising. I started because my skin turned massively sensitive and oil was the only thing that didn't make it flare up. It's calmed down now (e.g. I can wear make up and sunscreen) but I'm sticking with oil as my skin feels really soft, even though I'm in my fifties. I also save a fortune because, (except for Wheatgerm oil, which I get from Holland and Barrett) I buy from the grocery counter at a billionth of the cost of some poxy little jar of slap. It's left me with a very low opinion of the cosmetics industry!

SnakePlisskensMum · 20/04/2014 21:19

Like Floisme, I also have a low opinion of the industry having worked in it for a while. I suffer from peri-oral dermatitis (red, dry patches round mouth and nose) and find Nivea or astral just as good for keeping it at bay as more expensive options that IMO, certainly don't warrant the price tag.
In fact, eating well has the best effects on dryness I find.
Hopefully this will just be a temporary problem for you and well done Smile
