Need an eyelid primer for oily skin that isn't like foundation or brown eyeshadow

Finding the right one seems to be like searching for the holy grail for me
I've tried so many that go on muddy or nude like foundation, or brown like eyeshadow, which is useless if I want to wear eyeshadow!. This makes it too thick for me and prone to creasing, as you end up with double layered products (and can change the colour of the eyeshadow)
I really want something thin , virtually or completely invisible
Although I'm oily, too much product can reveal fine lines and look too heavy on me and the whole point is to keep makeup looking 'young' and fresh and keep it in place. I can't wear eyeshadow normally as it creases and smears so bad
I've also tried the regular face primers but it's made no difference….
I had a Mac one but it just went on like foundation, was way too thick and actually made the situation worse! Gloopy and creasy.
Tried Urban Decay but I bought it brand new and then lost it in all my rubble and found it and tried a year later! and it went on all blotchy and patchy.. maybe it needs to be new and fresh to work?
Am i asking for the impossible? Just want eyeshadow to stay put and stop drifting
Recently purchased Benefit's Creaseless Cream eyeshadow and all it does is crease terribly!

has anyone tried Benefit's Stay don't stray?

Laura Mercier do a good one. I don't like the benefit one as it's too much like a concealer IMHO.

alltoomuchrightnow · 16/04/2014 23:35

is the LM one clear? i had one of theirs I got on eBay but it went on like greasy brown cream so i had to chuck it. Would their oil free face primer also work on the lids i wonder...

I guess I want one like an invisible cream or gel, and not concealer like

I'll join you in the hunt ,thought I'd craked it with mac pain pots in painterly but it looks quite dry when applied and emphasises lines and still settles in creases. If applied thinly it doesn't do anything.

I hated the urban decay one..looked dry and cakey and mine was new.

Maybe try dabbing a makeup settng spray onto lids with a brush would work?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/04/2014 23:39

Oh,I used to have a fab one but I can't remember what it was Sad I shall rack my brains and think, but it really was fab and not too expensive.

I just tend to use concealer for the job during the day now though.

Will get back to you when I can remember!

darksideofthemooncup · 16/04/2014 23:40

It was more of a liquid, very pale/ pinky colour. I had a sample of it so not sure if it was a limited edition (which doesn't help I know!) I reckon face primer would work fine though

alltoomuchrightnow · 16/04/2014 23:44

normal concealer is way too greasy for me. I have to powder it to death after using it under my eyes (e.g. Laura Mercier;s concealer) Except for one by Boots 17 which has the most INCREDIBLE staying power (obviously meant for teenage skin) .. it's just a bit too drying and way too heavy for eyelids. For under eyes that have rings but are greasy it's unbeatable, and for broken veins and blemishes. I keep stocking up on it!

On the plus side, have just turned 43 and have no crows feet, just very fine lines. But it would be nice to wear shadows every now and then. I can't wear pencil or gel liners (smeary gloomy mess or all gone within five minutes) liquids are ok(the long last ones) but have to keep retouching the outer and inner corners

Yes Painterly. That's it.. horrendous. Might as well use a bad cheapie foundation instead

I use Benefit Lemon Aid, I know that's not what it's meant for but it works. If you pat it on thinly the yellowish colour sort of disappears and it acts as a colour corrector anyway. It creases very slightly but is vastly better than not using anything.

I think you have to be a bit creative. Use a good foundation which does fill in the pores, and then use a dusting brush to set the face. Then use another brush to dust eye shadow powder on I guess. The blocks may not work for you any more as they could be too creamy. I also have a Korean "creamy eye shadow pen" which supposedly should work on good skin. But I do notice that my skin is starting to dry out too. I also use LM as a foundation as well. I never had to use concealers before, but I do now. I notice my pore holes are getting bigger. Omg. These days I try to get back to a good facial routine, and use lotions to treat the blackheads, and they are minimising the pores a little bit. So it does help then to use better and lighter cream foundation.

darksideofthemooncup · 16/04/2014 23:54

You sound similar to me, I have to be very careful not to use anything too heavy or oil based. Do you use powder shadows? I can't wear gel or liquids as they crease within minutes and slide off.
I always apply a base layer of ivory powder shadow over my whole eyelid up to the brow with a large sponge applicator (body shop about £10.00) so that I have a smooth canvas to work on. My eyeshadow stays put no problem at all.

darksideofthemooncup · 16/04/2014 23:57

The 3 second blur primer by garnier is excellent in disguising open pores (of which I have many)

FreeButtonBee · 17/04/2014 10:40

The Urban decay primer potion is skin toned (on pale face me) but it v v good. I never have a problem putting any shade of eye shadow over the top of it. You get it in Debenhams

I love too faced shadow insurance

Whitershadeofpale · 17/04/2014 11:23

Nars pro prime. Goes on invisible, lasts well. Lisa Eldridge always uses it .

CMOTDibbler · 17/04/2014 11:39

I've been using the No7 eyelid prep for the last few weeks, and its been brilliant - not heavy, and eyeshadow and liner has stayed rock solid for 12 hrs+

libertytrainers · 17/04/2014 11:42

second nars

alltoomuchrightnow · 17/04/2014 15:20

thanks for the tips , think I'll try Nars if it goes on invisible. Tried Lemon Aid years ago, they actually sold it to me as a lid prep though it's not. I might as well have put butter on. Slid off taking the makeup with it in about half an hour. not good putting grease on grease. Tried to take it back saying they'd misold it to me but they were having none of it.
Yes i use powder shadows but they crease and slide so bad even with a neutral base this is why i need something to lock them into place

Whiteshadeofpale That is a fantastic link ! :) It makes me wanna play with my Bare Essential kit again. I like how she uses a concealer or a face powder to reset and smooth back the look. Hm... the concealer really works like an eraser.
