My quest for lovely hair - buying sulphate-free

Greengardenpixie · 15/04/2014 18:02

Does it work? I just bought l'oreal everypure sulphate free shampoo and conditioner. I have quite dry hair after dying it repeatedly to chase away my forever grey roots. Are you using it? Whats your experiences of it? Am i wasting my money

I always use sulphate free because of my skin. Have tried 3 different types of loreal stuff but each formulation left my hair lank and greasy on the second day. Sorry. Everyone is different though.
I find organic better and the coconut one smells amazing. Using the cherry one just now for volume and it's working.

Neeko · 15/04/2014 18:11

Organix. Sorry my phone self-corrected.

Hanginggardenofboobylon · 15/04/2014 18:26

I've just converted to sulphate free following the curly girl method and ordered the Devacurl stuff online. Do far so good!

Greengardenpixie · 15/04/2014 18:28

Thanks for your feedback on it. Its always good to hear what others think. I will give it a go anyway as i do agree, it all depends upon the individual although knowing my luck, it will do the same to mine!! I hear people go on about treseme but i just dont get on with the stuff. It dries it beyond belief! and yet, it makes my dd hair super super shiny!!! so weird!

Organix and devacurl. I must remember both once ive finished the one i have! [ my dh says i already am developing a thing for hair products!]

I use Organix too, it smells so lovely and lasts for ages.

daimbardiva · 16/04/2014 19:42

I have to say I'm struggling - I've been sls/silicone free for a few weeks and my hair doesn't feel clean and doesn't appear to be in any better condition :(

Greengardenpixie · 16/04/2014 19:46

What type are you using daimbardiva? I would hate my hair to still feel unclean. I sweat a lot through my head tbh esp since i have been on medication, im warm all the time and cant stand it when my hair gets limp and dirty.

I've been SLS free for about a year and my skin and scalp are much improved. My hair doesn't quite get the lovely sheen I had for a while before regular shampoo made it lank and greasy. But I don't have to wash my hair every day anymore!

It takes a wee while but is well worth it. I use Lush or the Boots naked range mostly. Tried bicarb and apple cider vinegar for a while but it didn't really work.

Good luck!

ChishandFips33 · 16/04/2014 19:51

Daimbarduva me too!

Been silicone free for a while but hair seems dryer, straw like and lank...gave it a good shot but went back to my old shampoos - can't get back to where I was - wish I'd never done it (I have fine straight hair; not thin but not a huge amount of it)

I've been using the L'oreal sulphate free for about three weeks now. I've had a drastic haircut today, because it was in the worst condition it's ever been. I've had to go from below the bra-strap hair to above the shoulders and I'm buying some lovely Pantene again tomorrow.

Greengardenpixie · 16/04/2014 21:03

Thats good to know. Maybe its not a good idea as i too have fine hair. Its dry enough so i dont need to have it get any worse! Maybe i will use it every now and again.

Pantene always made my hair so shiny and it smelt lovely. Its very interesting to hear different reviews. Any positive ones?

ChishandFips33 · 16/04/2014 22:26

To be fair, the first two weeks were very positive and hair was sleek shiny and snag free but then it went downhill from there

I still used my treseme heat protector spray as I couldn't find anything else that did what it did, but figured a small amount of silicone was ok as I was using silicone free shampoo (and some still had sulphate in for the deep clean)

I'd also switched to ionic parlux hair dryer at the same time (that was a good decision; super fast drying time!) so thought it might have been too much change at once but after months of persevering (I even gave away my old shampoos and conditioners so I wasn't tempted to fall off the now non slippy silicone free wagon) I couldn't stand it any longer (I'd always had swishy, shiny, snag free hair though I had, and still have, to wash it every day) and returned to old shampoos thinking it would be all reversed very quickly

I have also tried reverse washing and that was horrible too!

Mitchell2 · 16/04/2014 22:43

I have highlighted hair ( dark brown to blonde) and the best shampoo I have used is pureology which is sulfate free. I had the loreal one and it dried out my hair after a week or so. The pureology one is the hydrate one and my hair is soft and shiny.

Marmaladecat1 · 16/04/2014 22:48

I don't think my hair ever recovered from silicone free.
Weird sections of seriously greasy scalp and the driest length.
I still use the conditioner, organix but only to use it up tbh. It doesn't condition enough I don't think.
I probably will go to Pantene conditioner next.

Sorry I couldn't give you a happy story!

crashbangboom · 16/04/2014 22:49

Faith in nature works for me!

cheekygeeky · 16/04/2014 22:53

Sls free left my hair dry and brittle and almost impossible to come through. I tried it as I have v v v stubborn greys and was told the sls shampoos were stopping the dye attaching to greys.

I'm back to my normal shampoo now. And bastard grey temples.

daimbardiva · 16/04/2014 22:55

I'm starting to think it only works for really thick hair? Mine is not thick but I have a lot of it, and it's wavy rather than curly

Greengardenpixie · 16/04/2014 23:37

Think i might sell my l'oreal shampoo and conditioner on ebay now! Seriously though, i really dont need my hair in worse condition! The whole reason that i thought i would try it was in the hope it would retain more moisture. Maybe it is the type of hair? There just seems to be a lot more negative reviews than positive ones. My hair is quite fine but i have been told i have quite a lot of it. The problem i have is i have shorter growth at the top of the hair that frizzes cause i have naturally wavy hair. It makes it look dry and frizzy. I have tried EVERYTHING literally and nothing makes any difference to it. It was a vain hope that this shampoo may...but maybe not :( Any suggestions about good shampoos to try for dry dyed and weak hair????

Marmaladecat...i want honesty! If its crap, id rather know before i use it!

BitchPeas · 16/04/2014 23:48

I have thick curly fizzy hair that's comes down to just above my waist.

I tried the curly girl method, Loreal sulphate free and reverse washing. They all fucked up my hair!!! I gave them a good go for about a month each time, but it was so dry and dull and even frizzier than before!

I had a kerasilk (sp?) blow dry for £150 to reverse some of the damage and have gone back to John Frieda frizz ease. Never again will I be a sheep Grin

Greengardenpixie · 17/04/2014 00:12

Right thats it...not going to try it. Bitchpeas, did the hairdresser say anything about the damage?

itsbetterthanabox · 17/04/2014 06:43

Those who find it drying which conditioners are you using?
