Anyone know much about hair dying?

Hi all,

So my DD (17) has decided she wants to dye her hair pink over summer. I was a bit [shocked] when she first said it but she showed me this pic and I actually sort of like it..definitely think it will suit her.

She is naturally mousy brown but has been getting blonde highlights since she was 14, so is completely blonde now. Would they strip the blonde out of her hair then put the pink in? Or put the pink over the blonde? And when she has to go back blonde for school in September, would she have to go through the whole getting hightlights process again over the pink? Or would they strip the pink out? She dyed her hair dark brown when she was 16 and hated it after a few weeks and it took her forever (and a LOT) of money to get back to blonde. Hairdresser said it would be a bad idea to put a full head of blonde straight on top of the brown, so she got it done gradually with highlights.

I know the hairdressers would be the best place to ask! She only just (about 30 minutes ago) came to me with this and all the salons shut at 5 so been unable to call.

Don't know, but this will bump it for you at least. If her hair is quite long, is dyeing the bottom part of it (dip-dying?) an option, so that the coloured part cut be cut out to go back to school?

if all her hair is blonde (like nearly whit) she could have a toner, these last maximum a month then wash out. or try a crazy colour you can buy these in hair and beauty trade shops, marshmallow is nice subtle pink (again Hair has to be really light)

When I had mine done my hairdresser bleached my hair then put the pink on top to get a bright pink.

It fades really quickly to a bubblegum colour though, and then took ages to strip back to blonde.

Im very darl brown naturally last summer I stripped my hair then used swartzkopf live for the pink. It went from bright pink to vary pale in about a week despite it being a permanent colour. Hwd to dye my hair brown to fet rid of the blond afterwards though

You will only get light hair to go that shade of pink, the highlights will take ok but the rest if the hair will need to be bleached first.
To cover it after it will have to go back to mousy brown then re highlighted if she wants to.
I'd see a good colour technician don't do it yourself.

I dyed dsd2s hair pink for her at the weekend. She has naturally light brown hair but has been having highlights and blonder slices put in for a year or so now, so it was multi toned before we started.
I used two boxes of Ultra Bright Live XXL in shocking pink as she has quite a lot of hair and I wanted to be sure there was enough to cover it all!
This is a semi permanent colour that says it will wash out in 6 - 8 washes...previous experience means that I know it will last a bit longer than that...particularly on already bleached hair, but it does keep it in pretty good condition and it will be out totally within a month.
Her hair looks fab - the blondest streaks are now the brightest pink, and it has obviously taken slightly differently on all the different shades of brown/blonde that were there previously. It was very pink initially, but has already faded a bit, and she is delighted with it Smile
I had hair every colour of the rainbow when I was growing up, and have settled on pillar box red with some black for a good few years now. I think experimenting with colour on your hair is a rite of passage almost, and would never discourage anyone from giving a "crazy" colour a go - especially now that there are chalks and wash out colours that mean you can just do it for one night if you're not keen to go the whole hog!

Check out helenmelonlady on YouTube. And get some direction hair colour.
If her hair is bleached It will take the colour. For pastels, I mix directions with white conditioner (any- cheap and cheerful because you will use a lot) and you will get a similar colour to the picture. You can also mix the shades. Providing her hair is light, the colour you mix in the bowl is what you get.

Hopefully that picture shows up. I played around with pastel hair all last year- pink, lilac, silver bright orange briefly on purpose. Had to take a break because of the bleaching so beware.
