Fuck this shit. I've decided I'm going retro with my skin care.

It occurred to me the other day that I like Steam Cream because it's like a cold cream, but lighter.

I used cold cream (Nivea) every night throughout my teens and early twenties.

It's occurred to me that I've only ever adapted my skin care when stuffs been discontinued or because I've got older and you are supposed to change and you age.

In all honesty my skins no different to it was 15 years ago apart from the odd wrinkle.

I picked up some Nivea last week pm in pound, and and I had forgotten his much crap it gets off my face and how nice it leaves my skin.

So I thought back, and I've spent the last 10 years trying to find a cleanser as good as Himalaya cleansing milk, and non have been, not even close. Even Lancôme and Clarins. You could see the grime come off your skin, and it melted make up in seconds (stung the eyes though so used Nivea to remove eye up).

So I've ordered some on Ebay that is imported.

And ditto for Ponds Vanishing Cream. That was so good in the mornings that I could go without make up and it kept my shine free all day. And when I put make up no primer was required.

So I've sourced that too. Up till now never occurred to me to see if they were still been manufactured else where in the world.

I am happy and excited, and can't wait till they come Grin

What other products were really brilliant that you just can't get in the UK anymore?

I have given myself a body scrub with olive oil and salt! Made me skin feel great but it is dangerous as I slipped in the bath!

Sangria.....yes the Captivation was in a bright pink spray, I loved it!!

Also a fan of the Revlon Flex shampoo and conditioners, then the Salon Selectives which popped up in Savers not so long ago. Boots Naturals did an apple shampoo which was lovely and I liked the Body Shop seaweed stuff too as it was meant to make your hair grow quicker!!!

Update

Himalayas is as good as I remember it, and that's pretty damn good. Smells gorgeous, you only need a tiny amount and leaves your skin feeling really "soap clean" iyswim? But smooth and soft rather than really tight and dry.

So as long as I can still get it places I'm sticking to it.

And Nivea of course.

And carmex.

Now who remembers the Club Des Creaturs Beaute?

I always bought Agnes B from it- the first nail polish remover in a pen, the apricot colour correcting cream in a jar, the purple cream that corrected sallow skin and the green one for high toned complexions.

I also bought little black and white pots of Agnes B lip gloss and tubes of gel blush.

Gorgeous.

mignionette I do!!

I had some brilliant products from Agnes b, one eye shadow pallette in particular was wonderful and I remember they had a bronze lip lacquer -I loved it.

You are the first person to recall these Aylesbury. You can still buy some of them via the Agnes B stores and in France.

brilliant thread!

totally agree with the Boots cucumber simple range. This stuff was my basic during uni when I was poor but knew that I needed to take care of myself. I still buy this stuff today as backup, nice and creamy for night time or when staying indoors

Dunno, it's just called moisturiser. It's in a white jar, next to the Cucumber stuff. I used to use Cucumber moisturising cream, but they changed it, and it wasn't as heavy. I have quite dry skin, so need quite a thick one.

It's just called Traditonal Skin Care Moisturising cream.

Yardley used to do a brilliant mascara (I tried the replacement one but it wasn't the same)

Topaz - shampoo / conditioner, really concentrated

A dark green plastic bottle of Henna Wax- had a drawing of an auburn haired grinning woman

Henera shampoo/ conditioner if I was feeling flush

Body Shop Salad Oil conditioner

I came on to mention the createurs des beaute. I loved the Agnes B, especially the apricot cream! They always sent loads of free samples and wasn't everything always half price?

Brabra

Yes they used to send loads of little foil sample sachets and there was always an offer on. Used to work on me as I always felt i got something for (nearly) nothing.

I put my sensitive skin through hell in my teens and it was hard to get cheap products that weren't harsh, in the 80s
There was some lemony paint stripper that Superdrug did (or Medicare? who remembers them) called Aronde
I hadn't discovered face powder so used to cover my greasy nose with Witch stick (the solid stick) it didn't do much and when i used too much it had almost a green glow Hmm and i would literally chip bits of the stick and slap them on, hoping it would tone down my natural glow !
Ten o Six burnt me for weeks
I remember a cheap and nasty moisturiser from Medicare that every girl my age had. It smelt weird and was in a brown plastic bottle with a grid pattern on it. They did a matching cleanser which I swear was exactly the same product
I had to buy a lot of nasty Constance Carroll cosmetics off the market as couldn't afford much with my 75p a week pocket money (odd figure, that, mum!) The lippies would wear into a thin point (if they hadn't broken off before then) Their nail varnishes were fine, I remember lovely metallic blues. Small metallic purple and blue eyeliners.
Miners was shocking. None of it ever stayed put. Disgusting shades and 'natural' foundations that were pure wotsit.
I loved Boots 17 and the little single eyeshadows they did, I remember a yellow one called Bananarama and a surprisingly pretty pale blue although it's not a colour i'd go for now!
I also remember a particularly grotty habit I had, which at the time I thought was admirably economical… I would drench a cotton wool pad in toner or cleanser, apply to face, then squeeze it back into the bottle! be it Body Shop's honey water, Anne French etc.. didn't matter how dirty it was.. it could be re used! Shock
I bought some AF recently and it burnt my skin. Either the formula's changed or i've got more sensitive in my old age...

oh yes Agnes B and the apricot cream! i remember receiving a big rattling box full of samples...

I remember a beauty club you joined up to (in the 80s) and paid monthly and got sent a box each month. My friend had a black mascara from it that had a dial on it which you turned and the dial determined how thick the mascara came out. I remember being really envious of this hi tech product!

i would LOVE to smell the Body Shop pineapple wash again! that bean one was a 'mare… took off the sides of my nose skin, then all down the plug hole! Looked like a load of large ants. Elderflower eye gel did nothing but smelt lush…
The best hair conditioner I have ever used in my whole life was the body shop's henna one, the thick one in the tub. I used to bulk buy it and sleep with it on. Always complimented on how shiny my hair was. I was furious when it was discontinued in the 90s. In the 80s when I had perms I would literally leave it on for days after the perm (usually school holidays and refusing to leave house!) so it would restore my hair. And it did. Miracle product. BRING IT BACK, BODY SHOP!!

I used to use the Body Shop henna in the extra red and intensify it with vinegar, beetroot juice, anything to change the pH and make it work more .
Painted on an left for 4 hours Shock it was a day's work but amazing results

Orangeanddemons, thank you for the baby lotion idea, I bought some in the 99p shop and my skin feels lovely and soft and it didn't sting my sensitive skin.

Does anyone rembember the Anne French sensitive version? It had a peach lid and I could use that but not the blue lidded one which I tried recently and binned!!!

A beauty expert I worked with years ago told me that the Clinique three step stuff was as harsh as hell and to be avoided.

I remember the peach lidded Anne French; it was the unfragranced version. Used that for a while and went back the blue one which I've mostly used since 1978!!!
