What do you wear to disguise mumtum, I can't seem to get it right!

Last baby was 2 years ago but I have a definite baby belly still. I think it sticks out more as I'm quite short and small framed. I have lost weight round my waist and thighs but the mumtum is still like a little pouch!!
In winter I've covered up in jumper dresses & leggings but now trying to buy some clothes for spring and I'm so conscious of my tummy. If I wear boyfriend jeans and a fitting top I have a bump when I stand sideways on and look in mirror. But if I wear a loose top it is very unflattering on me and makes me look even more pregnant!

Any advice please. I want to treat myself to a few things to wear, just for casual wear but I don't know what to go for as I just feel I look an odd shape in everything.

Place marking too, I'm generally not happy with my body shape but I always had a flat-ish stomach and after two children it's awful now and the bit I try to hide the most. I spent last summer in baggy tops gathered at the bottom to try to disguise it but they make me look and feel a lot bigger than I am.

plentyofsoap · 11/04/2014 20:53

Dorothy Perkins high waist jeans are excellent and a good price too.

CuriosityCola · 11/04/2014 21:20

That's interesting about the high rise jeans. I do still wear low rise, but they aren't doing me any favours.

Jemster · 12/04/2014 08:07

Hi just bumping up to see if anyone can help us mumtum ladies!

On an exercise front I have started couch to 5k (on week 4) and just realised there is a strength and training exercise regime to go with it. Must stop 'rewarding' myself for running though. SmileGrin

Aked · 12/04/2014 08:39

I'm doing couch to 5k too Curiosity. Only just started week 2. I thought I might combine it with a bit of shred as I did that last year for a while and it did tone me up. Didn't keep it up though!

Aked · 12/04/2014 08:39

How are you finding it 4 weeks in??

TinTinsSexySister · 12/04/2014 08:48

Joining. I have this problem too, and I find it really depressing.

Might give the 30 Day Shred a go, already doing C25K, which is going better than I thought. I downloaded an app called Get Running though as you can't play your own music over the NHS one, which is otherwise excellent.

I have a handful of tops that look OK but have really struggled to find a new look since DD (2.5). I have lost all the weight but am a different shape and the mum tum remains.

Spanx are great for big occasions but they are too uncomfortable to wear everyday. I find Boden stuff generally quite flattering but it's not really my vibe so I struggle to find much I like there.

Sigh.

Timeforabiscuit · 12/04/2014 08:57

I have a belly so soft that it is my four year olds favourite refuge. You've really made it in life when your child's instinct is to greet you with "ahhhh belly, love your big belly mummy" while lifting your top up and burying their face into floppy skin.

Pelvic floor exercises helped a lot, concentrating on my posture even better, but my friends are tailored (not tight!) shirts and trousers with a bit of a heel. I still have tum, I doubt its going anywhere, but I'm an hour glass ...... from the back.

RollerCola · 12/04/2014 08:59

I'm the same shape as you jemster, 5ft3, pear shaped with a belly. The rest of me is ok, people say I'm slim but I don't feel it because when I look down my stomach is all I see and I feel wobbly.

I tend to wear long floaty tops that show off boobs and arms, worn with black leggings or skinny jeans when I go out. But most jeans and trousers I have dig in to my stomach and are uncomfortable. I'd love to wear more dresses as I'm sure they would be far more comfortable but I don't have much money and am never really sure what suits me.

MissMarjoribanks · 12/04/2014 09:02

John Lewis control pants and tights. I have had loads of compliments on going back to work about how slim I look despite two kids. It's all strapped in, that's why! Doubt they'd say the same if they saw me nekkid.

Also a 27lb non walking, non crawling baby does wonders for your upper arm tone. Wink

burnishedsilver · 12/04/2014 09:21

My fitness fanatic friend laughed at me but I swear the slendertone belt really helped my mum tum.

teta · 12/04/2014 14:18

I found some lovely t shirts in H & M of all places.Loose wide stripy ones (and grey) with a wide neck.I layered them over a very long vest top from Matalan ( they fall slightly off one shoulder ) and they are extremely flattering ( and tummy disguising).

PiratePanda · 12/04/2014 19:45

Sorry to have dropped off the planet ladies!

For work I live in LK Bennett dresses but last season Monsoon also did some very reasonably priced fitted dresses in heavy but stretchy fabric that were just awesome.

Also tailored trousers with side zips if you can get them, with a fitted fine knit with a deep V neck that distracts attention from my tum underneath a tailored jacket worn open. From the front it emphasises my curves and small waist. From the side the open jacket conceals the tum. Perfect!

Jemster · 12/04/2014 20:06

Well I popped into town today in the vague hope of finding some tops for work. Found some nice ones in H&M that had a draped neckline and kind of gathered at waist so perfect for hiding tummy. 12 was perfect on tummy but huge on shoulders and top half. 10 perfect on top but too tight on tummy. Similar problem in Next. Came home empty handed again. So fed up with this. I'm just going to have to diet I think.
Can any other short pear shapes with a tummy please tell me which shops you buy your clothes in so I can save myself some time?

Several yes on this thread helped me - M&S control vests, high waist jeans, control tights and the 30 day shred. 5'2, straight up and down // apple shape, quite slim size 10 but with weird porridge consistency tummy that needs tucking in!

Loveleopardprint · 12/04/2014 21:48

Primark do long vests with bra straps iyswim in loads of colours for £2. I layer them under everything. They smooth me out a little and I don't have to worry about tops riding up.

AmIGoingMad · 13/04/2014 17:09

Caesarean overhang here too after dc2 (9months). I know it hasn't been a year yet but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I've lost most weight much quicker this time around but that bloody overhang isn't shrinking at all! For the first time ever a tummy tuck sounds like an amazing plan. Finances won't allow that though.

I find dp Bootcut jeans with slightly longer than I would wear before tops are flattering ish. I'm also wearing so many more dresses than I used to but not sure theyll be flattering now that we're moving away from tights weather. I bought spanx after dc1 and just could not cope with them. Any suggestions for slightly less restrictive but do a decent job ones? Sorry for hijack but they might help us all!Wink

Jellaby · 13/04/2014 17:22

Similar problem, after reading this thread my strategies are going to be: 30 day shred, high waisted jeans, less crap snacking , potentially the 5:2 and wearing a waist toner.

Jellaby · 13/04/2014 17:22

Anyone know if slendertones are any good?

MsAspreyDiamonds · 13/04/2014 20:02

This has helped me after having 2 kids.

www.jillianmichaels.com/fit/

Weirdly , my tummy was toned when I used to carry my dd around in a baby bjorn. As soon as I stopped it started to becomes soft & wobbly again.

MsFiremanSam · 13/04/2014 20:20

I second the recommendation for MuTu. I'm 3 weeks into the Focus programme and can definitely feel the difference in my core strength.

bouquetofpencils · 14/04/2014 19:37

I second the primary vests. The elastic in them is really strong and they are long enough to tuck in jeans and they stay tucked in. They are better than control vests IMO, especially if you size down. I wear them under everything all year round, have navy, red, grey, beige.
They make me feel less wobbly anyway.
