So... Maternity clothes these days?

Right - I am totally putting the cart before the horse, but if I was looking for nice maternity clothes, are there any 'new' places that have cropped up in the past 5/6 years?? I mostly used Gap (for jeans, tops and summer dresses) and the odd Isabella Oliver thing for work tops (plus Top Shop smart work trousers, weirdly). Any ideas of reasonably priced places that have started doing maternity stuff in the last 5/6 years???

I was on ASOS yesterday and noticed they have a vast collection of maternity wear now, reasonably price and on trend.

Greenstone · 11/04/2014 12:17

I guess it depends on what kind of clothes you need (work or casual) and maybe to a certain extent how old you are/what your shape is. The ASOS range is very affordable and as Amber says, extensive and on trend, which is refreshing. However the range is just full of polyester, the dresses especially. I would look elsewhere if you need a really nice dress, but I do love the ASOS maternity Radley skinny jeans and probably some of their tops are handy.

Topshop is worth keeping an eye on but the stuff looks less flattering than the ASOS stuff. I think they could try harder tbh.

GAP - Never bought maternity stuff from there but I might yet (am only 10 weeks at the mo). The basics look like they're decent quality and some of the stuff is convertible to nursing wear from the looks of it.

Dorothy Perkins does some well-priced maternity stuff but again, I've never gotten anything there.

H&M can be really excellent if you go at the right time, but there's not always a great choice.

With my last pregnancy I mostly just tried to be canny and sized up in the normal ranges for things like stretchy tube skirts and longline stretchy tops for under stuff, then topped up with ASOS bits.

Keep an eye on eBay too of course.

Thanks both! Will definitely check out asos. I'll be, err, an older(ish)mum this time round I think! So no short skirts etc but then again I wouldn't have worn them first time round (DC1 is 6 now).

I never really got on with h&m although the long vests were handy. And I forgot about DPs. I want pretty reasonably priced stuff but can't stand synthetics. Thank you!! (Fingers crossed I need the maternity clothes shopping advice soon...)

Seraphine has some nice things and is a bit cheaper than IO.

BikeRunSki · 11/04/2014 19:07

Boden do mat wear now
I also liked JojoMamanBebe
New look too

BB01 · 11/04/2014 19:15

H&M good for decent quality basics
New Look great for on-trend and huge range (online) but quality not amazing
Next ok for some stuff but some v frumpy pieces
Seraphine do some lovely dresses

AmelieRose · 11/04/2014 19:20

I love Topshop maternity wear but it's quite expensive. The 'nice' stuff I wear on the odd occasion I go out at night is from there.

I like ASOS for basics (tights and vests particularly good!), but have found some other stuff to be of varying quality. Their jeans are good though. One of my friends likes H&M but beyond a pair of leggings the stuff hasn't really suited me.

I've done a similar thing to Greenstone above and for tops in particular have gone for baggy non-maternity tops or a size or two up.

okimighthavenamechanged · 11/04/2014 20:37

Crikey - forgot about Boden.... Shop there for children when there's 50% off but never quite right for me. However, undoubtedly solid good stuff so will give it a go!

Like the idea of bigger sizes. Was back in normal jeans a few weeks after giving birth after first two children but was rather ill both times (recurrent severe mastitis, not mad dieting... fab).

Never tried seraphine but will look for work gear (if and when necessary). God, I'm getting over excited...Blush.

H&M or Topshop for jeans. New Look is good for basic tops. I had a few Topshop dresses - good quality but quite expensive.

beccajoh · 11/04/2014 20:42

I ordered some stuff from ASOS but sent it back as it felt like it would burst into flames if I stepped into sunlight (v high poly content).

I bought quite a lot from Matalan last time around (DD2 is 14 months so reasonably recent). Their range seems to vary wildly though, from almost nothing/endless leggings to really decent lovely stuff, so you have to check back regularly. I got a really nice lace evening dress (fitted stretchy thing, lace sleeves, super comfy and flattering) for £28 from there and wore it to death for every social event I went to throughout the entire pregnancy. Also bought 2 long stretchy tunics that I wore endlessly.

I had a few things from Dorothy Perkins too, although the Matalan stuff was cheaper and washed better.

I bought 2 items from Asos - a chiffon evening type dress, which I sent back as the fabric was hideous and it was very unflattering - and a pair of 'yoga' type stretch pants when I was massive at the end and everything dug in at the waist. They were ridiculous - about 6 inches too long (and I am quite tall and would usually buy 'longer length' trousers) and too thin/stretchy to sew or Wonderweb the hems and the waistband felt really comfy at first but very quickly stretched so that I had to keep hoiking them up. Would never buy anything from Asos again after that, although I know lots of people who love it (and have one very glamorous and stylish friend who swore by their maternity stuff)!

I'm a big fan of asos maternity. Sure there's a lot of manned fibre but if you can live with that, the sheer variety means there is bound to be something you like and they have regular sales.

I bought this dress last week and had so many com
