No matter what I buy, and I buy a lot, I always think other peoples clothes choices are better than mine

Why am I so insecure regarding my own clothes. I buy some great stuff, work hard at putting it together but never really feel I get it right. Is it just me? I've just turned 40 am perhaps having a style crisis.

I must take up running again.

Get me away from rug rats....!

I like to look like Michael Kors adverts. I end up Little Britain... Sigh

I feel like this too - I think I've carefully bought something and will look good and then suddenly I look at my outfit choice and think - good God! But this is the feeling that drives the fashion and beauty industry. It's worth billions - so god forbid any of us would feel like

  1. We had enough clothes
  2. We were good enough (wearing what we've got)

It's this sense of insecurity and of wanting to be judged favourably and to look good that makes us spend, spend spend.

Have enough - typo .... Smile

I guess if I had to pinpoint the way I'm feeling, I feel like I'm losing self confidence. I find that I buy too many clothes to compensate for this. I see myself through negative eyes and am my harshest critic but seeing that I did just turn 40 and do look after myself, in terms of food and fitness, I just wish I could be kinder to myself. The other thing, that people have hit upon is the fear of trying something new. I cling to my long heavy hair when I know a shoulder length style would be more flattering but have been dithering for about a year....

Just to add, I feel like I'm mourning the old me which stops me embracing the new me which could be lurking beneath the surface. New me, as in slightly older, with a style that makes me happy and confident in my own skin.

Someone up thread mentioned heavy, long hair - I had this too, til three hours ago! I now have shoulder length hair with a few long layers. I love it and am convinced I look younger and brighter!
