Reporting back on curly hairdresser recommended here

On a curly thread here are couple of months ago and someone recommended Matthew James in Birmingham. Had to wait fecking ages for an appointment, but I saw him today. My hair is a miracle, no frizz for the first time ever. I am amazed - I even slept on it this afternoon and it is still frizz free ( Blush DC running me ragged, which is why am sleeping in the daytime, honest.)

He was really easy to talk to and explained the curly girl method to me properly – I think I've been doing it wrong and not leaving the hair wet enough while the curls are forming IYSWM. Only criticism is that it's quite short as it sprang up a lot, but he did say that might happen we would have to work towards the shape that I wanted.

You could also try co-washing? Its washing your hair only with conditioner. I havent ever tried it but its meant to cut down on frizz and on the drying effects of shampoo on hair.

Just FYI I wanted my hair today with Naked shampoo and truckloads of Naked conditioner, then used Umberto Giannini jelly on it whilst v wet, put clips at the crown and left it to dry naturally, as I didn't have a dryer.

The result wasn't as good as when Matt did it with the diffuser, but it was a good stopgap!

Pixiepie I've tried co-washing dd hair and it doesn't look clean or smell fresh Hmm

Pixiepie · 12/04/2014 22:53

Yes, i cant really see how it works tbh, but others rave about it. You can buy co-wash shampoo on amazon. Maybe thats better than just using bog standard conditioner? Pantene seemingly do one.
My hair is not that curly but i suffer from frizz at the top of my hair in particular. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. It may be that its split ends. Its very annoying and irritates me intensely and i have been looking for things to try when i came across co-washing.

I'd quite like to go and see him. A couple of years ago I went to the salon in New York that trained him up and had an awesome cut their. Unfortunately I couldn't get anybody over here to carry on cutting it right and then I got sidetracked into the stupid keratin straightening nonsense. I now have to grow the blooming thing out (so much for it washing out in 12 weeks) but once its gone, I am definitely going curly again.

HeeHiles · 12/04/2014 23:28

When I washed my dd's hair with just conditioner I would put a tiny bit of shampoo in with the first application - just enough to help lather up the conditioner - rinse then apply more conditioner to the ends but don't rinse out.

Apparently frizz occurs because your hair is so dry it's the hairs reaching out into the atmosphere for moisture ( which is why your hair is more frizzy in a wet/ tropical environment ) so what you need to do is get more moisture into your hair. The only way to do that is to ditch the sulphates and silicones and get back to a more natural way of cleansing and moisturising. Has worked for me anyway..!

Pixiepie · 13/04/2014 10:22

I suffer from fiizz and my hair is just 'kinky' rather than curly really iykwim. I have short hairs at the top and they are the bits that cause the frizz because they curl up and look awful. I spoke to the hairdresser and she says it can be a combination of split ends and hair just growing in. I may try a sulphate free shampoo...i have tried everything else. Any suggestions would be welcome. My recent purchase is kerastase oil which smells beautiful and does help but still the ends persist to stay frizzy even after applying it :( :(
The only thing i can think of thats caused it is my lack of going to the hairdresser and dying my greys out! Its really pissing me off!!!

Tresemme Naturals conditioner is a great leave in. I use Boots cheapo gel on top. Sometimes use Boots curl creme instead of the Tresemme. Must try plopping.

I didn't have a good experience. Think he's better for really curly hair. He wasn't good for my wavy hair.

Jmangel · 18/08/2017 19:28

What do you do if you use a pre shampoo conditioner like coconut or olive oil - would just washing with conditioner remove it or would a sulphate free shampoo remove it?

Ollivander84 · 18/08/2017 20:56

Just wash with conditioner. I don't use shampoo on my hair at all

Katie197601 · 19/08/2017 07:49

The Boucleme products really good. I didn't have a good experience with him. I think he's better for really curly hair not wavy hair and not fine hair
