dye over dye?

Can any hair colour experts advise me? I'd like to dye my hair red (I have perfect 10 reddish blonde to try) The main issue I have is that in the past, when I have dyed my hair red, the grey goes a very startling bright red, in comparison to the rest of my hair. In the past this never used to be an issue, but the more grey I go, the more it happens.

I was thinking of dyeing my hair a colour to my natural colour (a dark blonde) and then a couple of days later, using the red to get a more consistent all over colour. Would this be advisable?

Thanks!

You could try! What type of hair have you got? Is it in good condition? Would it stand two colours so close together?

I'm not a hair expert, but I colour my hair....a lot & quite frequently. But my hair suffers for it. I've put up to 4 colours within a week before & my hair hasn't fallen out. But my hair is very very thick & strong. And it is now very wrecked! I've put it through some serious abuse lately!

So in theory, putting a more natural colour on your hair first to obtain a more even base colour to blend the grey, then applying the light reddish blonde - may work, however it just depends how dark the 'base' colour would be. You'd have to choose a lightish blonde, but at the same time it needs to cover the grey. I wonder if a very light brown would do the trick? Like lightest brown or something? Have a look at nice n easy they have quite a few shades, good luck!

Thanks! my hair is fine, but a lot of it, still quite shiny, except the ends which are a bit dry.

The base colour is one I use a lot, it certainly looks more blonde then brown. When I apply anything darker, my hair goes too dark. I know the red will fade, so I'd rather have a lighter base to fade to than a darker one. Or does it fade because of the light base, or does that not make any difference?!

I guess it would be easier if the base colour was lighter rather than darker, but at the same time you need to make sure those greys are covered! It's tricky. I don't know if it's a bit cheeky but would you be brave enough to ask a hairdresser in a local salon for advice? You could just pop in & ask the question! You don't have to mention you're intending to do it yourself!
