What do properly stylish women wear for weddings?

I would like to be one!
I have a summer wedding to go to and am really feeling very 'meh' at the floral dress and bolero/wrap combo that seems to be on offer everywhere.
Happy to consider an outfit with trousers ..or anything tbh!

I quite fancy a posh jumpsuit - but they seem to be in black or navy

You have to start with a firm sense of your own style.

What do you like best? And/or attract most compliments in?

meditrina · 10/04/2014 09:25

This jumpsuit might be posh enough?

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/04/2014 09:35

This done more formally could be fun and different if you have the height, deportment and chutzpah. (So perhaps not the easiest option.)

This is a wonderfully bold colour combination.

Personally I am furious that I was not born with Zaha Hadid's bearing and wardrobe; I would happily wear anything she's photographed in to a wedding - or any other event.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/04/2014 09:37

Sorry X'ed - no ideas on jumpsuits....

frankietwospots · 10/04/2014 09:52

Liking the idea of a jumpsuit! I've got a late summer wedding to go to and I'm thinking of doing a printed trousers and top combo, something like this:

Trousers in the Blue Party Floral:

This top in either the pink or the navy:

And perhaps these heels in the china blue:

That's a great summer wedding outfit Frankie.

I haven't got any weddings to go to this year, but if I did I'd wear something like this skirt in wine:

Or possibly in Blue:

With this top (or one like it):

Huge heels and a nice clutch, and maybe a chunky necklace.

PrimalLass · 10/04/2014 10:16

I have ordered, tried on and send back so many dresses. Have decided to go for a posh maxi skirt, lace tshirt and a blazer. Then I can wear it all separately.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/04/2014 10:27

Not going anywhere if I can't wear this

PrimalLass · 10/04/2014 10:44

I would rip that when I was drunk dancing.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/04/2014 10:58

...few rips would only add to its coolth.

foxysocks · 10/04/2014 11:51

also have a wedding coming up - think i'm going to wear a black silk top (reiss) with either mint green (celine), a pale neutral (reiss), or black/silver print (whistles) skirt. with metallic pointed flats, still to be purchased.

Karbea · 10/04/2014 12:19

How about this dress

TheGrassIsSinging · 10/04/2014 14:41

A dress you love. Not too many accessories.

People always go crazy for sparkly boleros and fascinators and hair accessories and hats and bloody spangly, flowery tat at weddings. Its not necessary.

Just a really great dress that you love is all you need Grin

AmberNectarine · 10/04/2014 14:57

I quite like a trouser suit/tuxedo look at weddings. Possibly with tailored shorts for summer.

AmberNectarine · 10/04/2014 14:57

Love that dress Karbea.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/04/2014 15:26

Why don't I love that dress? (Karbea's link.)

I think because there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Sad to say, but if I make a particular effort to get dressed I kind of want people's faces to do thisHmm...

And, in my head, a few days later they might be doing thisEnvy face. Or they might not.

PastaandCheese · 10/04/2014 18:48

frankie you've inspired me. Struggling with something I can breastfeed in at a wedding. I've sent 4 dresses back this week.

Looking at your outfit I feel inspired to go for separates. I've ordered the Chelsea trousers and the short sleeved lace top in ivory.

I'll get a nice navy shrug thing and high heels and I'm done. I won't even have to fake tan my legs!

Finbar · 10/04/2014 18:51

I also love a tux or fitted suit with bright handbag. But can't find any. Also it may be too hot for such a suit in August ?

The personal shopper service @ John Lewis might be useful to steal ideas from & then buy similar outfits from less expensive places.

Personally only truly fabulous women tend to wear big hats these days. Now they are not the norm the meek and mild haven't got the guts for them anymore. So I say if you want to stand out a really sassy hat (bigger the better) does the trick

Finbar · 10/04/2014 20:21

Love a hat too!
It's all sounding a bit seventies ...but that's good isn't it?
