To fringe or not to fringe

I'm in my mid 50s, have nape length fine white blonde hair which I have in a (boring) bob, side parting, no fringe. Do I go for a ful fringe, side swept fringe or no fringe? Off to get hair cut Friday, also, do I grow it a bit longer? Shoulder length maybe? Everytime I go for a cut, I end up with it too short, so I look like a pinhead and too granny fied.

I had a one length bob with a side parting for a few years but I was getting sick of it and also my grey was really noticeable around my hairline, even after getting my roots done.

Anyway I cut myself a pretty heavy fringe and I really like it. I think it makes me look younger than my 41 years. My bob is quite blunt with a heavy straight fringe.

I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself though like I did!

I also recommend a heavy fringe I have one at the moment - similar hairstyle to you. I saw it in Vogue a few months ago and rather impulsively got it done I love it but I do need ot trimmed every two weeks otherwise I'd go nuts. I know what you mean about the pinhead thing I hate that. Tel them you'd like to grow it into a longer Alexa chung type bob and hopefully the hairdresser won't chop too much off.

I'm tempted to cut a symmetrical curved fringe into my graduated bob too. The front just seems lank so I end up pinning it back now I know how to use bobby pins correctly.

phoolani · 10/04/2014 22:39

Whitecat- is there a correct way to use bobby pins? What don't I know??

AllDirections · 10/04/2014 22:41

What does a heavy fringe look like?

phoolani · 10/04/2014 22:41

Try getting a fringe without getting the rest cut shorter and see how you go. Funnily enough, I've got hair like you describe and I've decided on a fringe. Had one a few years ago and looking at photos, it looked great. Getting it done Sunday.

phoo I've been opening them with my teeth and sliding the flat side to my scalp. No no no all wrong. Don't open it just slide wavy side down. It grips amazingly well. Just Google.

phoolani · 10/04/2014 23:00

I'm now traumatised at the fact I've been doing bobby pins completely wrong. What else have I got arse backwards?? Argh!

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 10/04/2014 23:17

Ok, heavy fringe it is. Hopefully I won't come out looking like my mum (again) and I never tried to cut my fringe after once doing it and getting a tiny bit of hair in my tear duct. Kin ell that hurt. Cheers! Will let you know how it goes.

Look at Sali Hughes how to dry a fringe if you get one - that woman is a revelation.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 11/04/2014 14:24

Done it! Couldn't do really heavy as my hair is so fine and it would have had to come from my crown, but still good. My hairdresser long ago taught me how to dry it, blast from each side and down wards, don't try and brush too much and it should be nice and straight. But will look at her, thanks.

Any regrets? Getting mine done Sunday.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 11/04/2014 21:39

It's lovely, not my first time though, much softer and less ...old.

Ah, the magic words 'less old'! I can't wait to get mine, hair's driving me crazy at the minute.

Sunnyfeet · 12/04/2014 10:26

I've got a fringe - otherwise I'd be needing Botox in my forehead!
