What do you wear in summer if you have ugly legs?

I always have trouble with summer clothes. I am fairly slim and have the 'desirable' gap between my thighs when standing but it all goes wrong below the knee.

My calves are MASSIVE!
Probably wider than my thighs. They have always been this way, even when I was less than 8 stone. I have chunky ankles too. Not only that but I now have very noticeable thread veins all over my legs.
I only feel confident in skirts if they cover me to the floor. I used to wear wide linen trousers, but I think they look frumpy these days. I love cigarette pants on others, but usually they won't even go past my ankles and if they do they look terrible. I have trouble with boots, even Hunter wellies won't fit - can't get them on, so the knee- high boots with shorts look is tricky, although it would probably work looks wise.

Am I doomed to jeans forever?

Wedges are perfect for maxis, some flats look a little odd but it depends on your height I think. If you're short you tend to look shorter and dumpier in flats and a maxi.

Converse with a maxi?Just why?!

MissUumellmahaye · 08/04/2014 12:27

I like the idea of a long skirt, anyone bought a nice one recently?

PrimalLass · 08/04/2014 12:36

Wedges yes, but normal heels no.

Converse because I like a casual look

Agree re maxis and heels. Not a look I would ever wear. But you have t find the style and combo that works for you.

For me, its strappy floaty maxis in strong prints/patterns, bra underneath but the dress needs to have straps that cover up my bra. Also need to be v-neck to flatter big norks. Love those plain jersey maxis bit they look crap on me.

Always wear flats with a maxi, but they have t be pretty - some pretty detail or maybe in a metallic. I'm tall, though. A maxi and high heels would look tarty on me.

For those worried about my weight - I don't think at 9 stone I am underweight - just slim! I put the word 'desirable' in commas because it is tongue-in-cheek. I do have a thigh gap - it is due to my natural body shape. I also have very slim hips & no bum. But I have 30J boobs and chunky calves - not all in proportion. I find the boobs easier to dress than the legs.

Maybe if I dress the boobs well enough no-one will look at the legs!

I did used to wear shorter skirts anyway - in fact really short skirts look ok because I have slim thighs-but the veins in my legs are really bad lately so I now only wear short skirts in winter with thick tights. If I expose my tight-less legs these days people often ask if I have been in an accident because the veins look like massive bruises from a distance. I then explain they are not bruises & the questioner gets embarrassed for pointing it out & then I get embarrassed because they are embarrassed! I did ask about getting them lasered, but they are only cosmetic so I would have to pay £££.

Hey OP, don't worry about the thigh gap - some women are that shape some aren't, it just seems if you happen to have a currently desirable physical attribute you're bound to get criticised for it. Some of us can't help having a thigh gap - it doesn't mean we're starving ourselves.

Anyway, off soap box and back on topic...

Above the knee skirts or maxi skirts suit me best and I won't bare my naked legs in public in a short skirt these days. With thread veins, pale tan resistant skin and cellulite just above my knees opaque tights are my best friends!

I will wear on the knee dresses with natural coloured stay ups for formal wear but for casual it's maxi skirts/dresses in summer definitely with flats or a low wedge, not just because I'm tall and many maxis are not long enough for me to wear with heels, but I think heels with a maxi dress just look wrong unless it's evening wear and even then kitten heels look classier I think.

I also wear wide legged linen trousers (that sit on my hips with plain fitted t-shirts) or skinny jeans/Gap khakis rolled up at the ankle.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 08/04/2014 23:09

I have 'chunky' calves and I don't think they are ugly. Smile in fact many men have quite a thing for them NOT THAT IT MATTERS Grin

My legs suit short skirts and maxi dresses as others have said.

I wouldn't dream of wearing maxis with anything higher than a low wedge - heels and a maxi reminds me of the 'evening wear' section of a 1980s beauty contest. I think they look good with gladiator style flats.

How rude are some people to point out your veins! I would tell them it is very rude to make personal comments about people's bodies. I've never used it but would the Sally Hansen airbrush product for legs help?

Maybe if I dress the boobs well enough no-one will look at the legs! Agree. Smile

Chewbecca · 09/04/2014 10:42

How about this sort of maxi skirt? It's 100% cotton so would be nice for summer.

TheLadyMarion · 09/04/2014 10:51

I think you should go for it and show off your legs. You sound lke you have a great figure.

I am extremely pale skinned and never tan...it made me self conscious for ages in the summer. (Fake tan is hopeless if you are as pale as me...anything more than one shade darker just looks like dirty orange. And one shade darker is just 'slightly less blue' so not really worth it).

Now I am old (45!) I don't give a toss and wear what I like, and I'm a chubster too! Confidence, nice hair, good underwear for control of the wibbly bits, nice fabric and smart sunglasses...you can get away with anything.

And people who mention your veins are just very rude. Ignore.

ENormaSnob · 09/04/2014 11:00

Maxi and heels look bloody awful.imo.

Flats only. Wedges at a push.

Harem trousers?
Chinos?
Maxi skirt?

lainiekazan · 09/04/2014 11:02

Mmm, this problem has always plagued me. I have decent enough legs, but my knees... They are awful . They have big lumps on the inside. Even when I was ill and weighed less than 7 stone I had these protuberances on my knees.

Yesterday I was watching You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan (don't sneer: very suitable film for me and dd 10). She was wearing what would probably be regarded as frumpy 90s stuff - cardigans, wide-legged linen trousers, below-the-knee dresses - but she looked absolutely great.

impty · 09/04/2014 11:27

Just to join in, I too have legs to cover in the summer. Thread veins galore which I have had treated, but have returned! I was told they might...

I love maxi dresses, and wear with flip flops, sandals, wedges (and haven't worn with converse but I might).
I also like cropped trousers (I've veins all over my ankles and feet too, but what the hell), straight jeans turned up.

I also wear knee length dressses, shorts if it get hot enough, and my legs get a bit of colour. Because actually whilst they look blotchy and I don't like them, I don't hate them either. They work and that's quite important.

cupcake78 · 09/04/2014 11:38

I'm having a similar problem. Varicose veins due to dd and ds one of which has gone below the knee and into my calf muscle Hmm

So I will be wearing maxi dresses/skirts. Linen trousers. Leggings under tunic tops/short dresses. Hmm

I don't think you can go wrong with a good wedge and a nice strappy sandle/flip flop and a good pedicure.

Francagoestohollywood · 09/04/2014 11:40

Maxi dresses are frumpy only if you get frumpy ones! There's plenty of lovely maxi dresses and maxi skirts around, and have a look on Pinterest for suggestions on how to style them!

CooCooCachoo · 09/04/2014 20:59

Ooh love maxi dresses, but I'm a bit too chunky to pull one off without looking preggers... In fact these only seem to suit me with a bump!

Envy anyone who can pull them off!

In terms of the thigh gap, it's desirable to me. My legs always rub together in the summer and I don't think I'm big - a comfortable size 14 (when not pregnant) and well proportioned except for my chunky thighs! Always have to wear shorts or crop trousers, and with chunky thighs, they are equally difficult to find.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 09/04/2014 21:17

My legs are pasty white with lots of broken veins. I also have very dark hair so summer makes me feel vile.

My friends have been, in order of preference:
-Hareem pants
-Maxi skirts/dresses
-Jeans and sandals with a very vesty top
