Cowlick and fringe - I should just give up shouldn't I?

I have had a side fringe for a while and it has been reasonably accommodating of my cowlick, but I recently changed it to a heavy, blunt cut fringe. I love it, and it suits me, but I cannot get it to sit straight no matter what I do.

I have BBH'd it, used straighteners, tried the Sali Hughes back and forth method (had most success with this), but even using my teenaged ds' 'freeze hold' hairspray, after a few hours the wave comes back and I end up pinning back the fringe in frustration.

I noticed this morning that I had written in my diary, in capital letters STOP CUTTING IN A FRINGE - now I remember why Grin

Before I give up completely, is there anything else I can try?

Me too, and I sometimes forget and think I'll cut in a fringe, only to regret it and remember the promise I made last time!
My niece is a hair dresser and says you can use relaxer on it, like perming solution, which will work, but will obviously grow out.
I think the only thing to do is get used to a side fringe and be happy with it!
(take photos of your kinky fringe so you don't forget again!)

I have a huge cowlick and a huge fringe. It has to be heavy, and dried from soaking wet with the back and forth method. If it dries even slightly before that, forget it!

jammietart · 07/04/2014 12:20

I was going to suggest Sali Hughes 'back and forth' method but see you have tried that! it works for me but only if i do it to the letter and brush and dry it the second I get out of the shower ie while it is still dripping wet.

jammietart · 07/04/2014 12:21

Ah cross post with Stat

AnnabelleDarling · 07/04/2014 12:52

Yes, I could be letting it air dry too much before the back and forth! What do you put in yours before you dry it? I got a straightening balm (Charles Worthington maybe?) but I didn't notice much difference. I should watch Sali again and see what she recommended.

I don't use anything -hairspray after but that's all.

SorrelForbes · 07/04/2014 13:05

Ditto to the method StatisticallyChallenged uses. I have two cowlicks!

Eatriskier · 07/04/2014 13:10

I've just recently had a heavy fringe cut in and my hairdresser suggested that, in addition to the other methods above, to sleep for a while with a hairband over it to teach it to stay put. It does seem to have helped a lot, as I can now wear my fringe without a ton of hairspray in it, with it just needing combing back into place every now and then.

Mintyy · 07/04/2014 13:10

Is it safe to google "the back and forth method"? Am going to try.

I have a cowlick and a v high forehead and much prefer a full fringe. I kid myself it makes me look younger too.

PrimalLass · 07/04/2014 13:12

Try changing the side of your parting. That worked for me.

tethersend · 07/04/2014 13:24

I've just persuaded cowlick-bestowed 5yo DD to have a fringe cut as her hair was going in her eyes.

It looks like the council cut it. I am devastated. However, so is she, so I am having to spend the day telling her that its amazing and now hair is not in her eyes.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 07/04/2014 13:24

Cowlick here, had a fringe for the last 4 years. Keeping it. Cant face the alternative! My hair is fine so nothing to weigh it down either. Straightening it gives me approx 36 hours without it, unless it gets wet!

DarylDixonsDarlin · 07/04/2014 13:32

Oh ok :) have just googled the back and forth thing snort cant link from phone but there was a guardian article about fringes where it is mentioned.

What she describes is exactly how i have been drying my fringe since I've had it, which explains how i have been able to bear it so long I guess haha

jammietart · 07/04/2014 13:48

Nothing. Its too wet to put anything in it! Sali Huhes recommends a primer but I've not tried it. here's the video of the 'back and forth' method.

murphys · 07/04/2014 13:55

I have been graced with one too. I have a fringe but part it the other way now so the heavier side weighs down the cowlick part. When I dry it I blow dry that part down flat - no roller brushes or anything like that - just downwards with a flat brush like you are flattening that part.

It works for me most days

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/04/2014 14:11

Snap sorrelforbes -two cows links and a big widow's peak in the middle. I need some sort of fringe as with long straight dark hair I end up looking like a Cher impersonator otherwise

Dumpylump · 07/04/2014 15:04

Just watched that link, going to give it a try later, although I am usually able to tame my fringe with ghds. Never seen Sali Hughes before although I had heard her name....liked that video a lot, will have a look for some other stuff - could use some advice on how to put eyeshadow on without looking ridiculous!

PaulinesPen · 07/04/2014 15:13

After nearly 50 years I waved the white flag of defeat on this some time ago. I accept my hair now for what it will do instead of fighting it to do what it won't.

And my goodness I've fought that fight to distraction over the years.

It'll never be thick, I will never have a blunt straight fringe, curls and waves aren't happening, and it only grows to a certain length then stops.

Otoh it's a nice colour and looks ok with a side type fringe.

The cowlick won.

somedizzywhore1804 · 07/04/2014 15:20

I have this problem and I've had success with the back and forth method and super strong hold mousse (quite a bit of it) in the fringe roots. Try that before you give up- only thing that's worked for me.

IrishBloodEnglishHeart · 07/04/2014 15:24

I used to get my wavy (European) hair relaxed years ago. It used to last for about 5-6 months. I think this treatment is more common than it was, I only knew of one stylist that would do it on Euro hair back then. It smoothed everything out and I could wear a fringe.

AnnabelleDarling · 07/04/2014 21:28

Thanks, you have all given me hope! I shall persevere Smile

But what about wind?
Any breeze at all, fringe instantly falls into two pieces, courtesy double cowlick weird look. Not good and can't stop this happening even a la sali huges and loads of hairspray!!
