A real shower of shite

Nothing looks good at all here

And does Emma Thompson have awful posture or is it just the picture?

I have no idea how they continue to get it so wrong. Years ago I would always find something in store, but I cannot remember the last time I was excited by anything. This campaign is another huge failure in my opinion and throwing money at an ad campaign wil not change their fortunes. They need to go out on the streets and see what real women are wearing and start using women who might actually buy their clothiang to test it first. When I see Emma thompson weariang M & S on the red carpet I will look again!

Oops sorry for the typos!

I can see they tried the minimalism (except the print green dress), and I don't believe that is a bad thing (mind you, I don't defend M&S becose I like it, I don't usually). So I don't feel horrified but anyway, what materials are used? I hope not polyester Grin

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 06/04/2014 06:43

Oh dear. I, uncharacteristically, agree with Liz Jones, too.

Catnuzzle · 06/04/2014 07:00

I agree with Liz. Not something I like to admit!

Marylou2 · 06/04/2014 08:26

Have to agree that they've got it so wrong it's laughable. Not a single "leading lady" that I find inspirational either although I was awestruck by Grace Coddington last time.On a morw prosaic note I went to look for PJs yesterday and couldn't find a single thing. Get your act together M&S clothing as we people walking between your excellent food and cosmetic departments have money to spend.

teta · 06/04/2014 08:32

The photographs even make Annie Lennox look like a granny when she is normally elegant.

smallinthesmoke · 06/04/2014 08:39

I just fell about laughing when I saw the ads. They are like a parody of a terrible campaign. Annie Lennox is such a great woman and she's wearing an outfit that my 72 yr old mother would turn down as fuddy duddy. And her posture! Yes! It's crazy.
If M and S are patting themselves on the back for a great campaign then they are sadly deluded.

crypes · 06/04/2014 08:42

I was quite horrified at the advert in the newspaper , all those models looked really frumpy and middle aged. Annie Lennox had lost all individuality and edginess, Emma Thompson looked snooty and colonial as though she was sitting next to a black slave.

Bunbaker · 06/04/2014 08:51

I'm 55 and probably fit the demographic that M & S want to sell to. Those clothes are hideous.

I had a look round the Meadowhall store this week (one of their larger stores) and bought two cotton camisoles to wear under clothes. Nothing els appealed.

There was a time when I used to make myself not go into the store because I would always end up buying something, but sadly it happens less and less often now. Even their knickers aren't up to scratch any more.

Their chief execs need to read the thread about what women want from clothes and take notice.

noddyholder · 06/04/2014 08:54

Emma Thompson soooo patronising every time I see her interviewed

MarshaBrady · 06/04/2014 09:00

It doesn't look great. That's the second Annie Leibowitz shot I've seen lately and thought it's a bit strange. As in strangely not great.

The four on the left look alright in the line up and the three on the right look silly. ET onwards.

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 06/04/2014 09:06

I do agree but also wanted to say "LIZ, BUY YOURSELF A BRA FFS."

Ah that feels better Smile

RonaldMcDonald · 06/04/2014 09:22

I think la Jones looks better than the models and she does make the right points.
M&S just need to photograph some things accurately for the website so that it was less shocking. This has been a rubbish campaign

jaffacakesallround · 06/04/2014 09:49

I think Emma T's pose is ironic 'thespian'- she's posing like a luvvy - taking the p.....

coffeeinbed · 06/04/2014 10:27

It's so unfocused - they all look out of place and awkward.
And who thought Rita Ora was a good addition? Who? And why?

really, it's been driving me bonkers.
The clothes look awful, the campaign is mortifying.

Mumzy · 06/04/2014 10:46

I'm 45 professional and nothing in the campaign appeals to me. I buy food, school shirts, underwear, tights the occasional pair of shoes from M&S. I use to buy most of my workwear from them when I was in my twenties. Things Ihate re: M&S synthetic fabrics peri menopausal so feeling the heat need natural fabrics, poor stock control items not being in stock for months on end, different lines which are confusing, indifferent staff in stores.

elfycat · 06/04/2014 10:53

I don't see it as we're agreeing with Liz Jones, but rather that Liz Jones has finally said something true and sensible (it was bound to happen but I'm sure it's just a fluke and the odds are 1:15000002 of it happening again)

I used to love M&S, but IMO whenever they have something that works - early Per Una for example - they then notice that older people shop there and find it necessary to make the range for older people without realising that the 80 year old shopping in Per Una doesn't want to be wearing clothes which M&S have selected for her, or she'd have been up on the empty first floor looking at colourful polyester

lurkingaround · 06/04/2014 10:58

I find it awkward and sort of embarrassing to look at.

Twinklestein · 06/04/2014 10:58

The new ad campaign is dire - dreadful clothes, models look uncomfortable, odd photography.

But I've just ordered my mum two linen dresses from the website which actually look nice, and I bought her 5 cashmere cardis back in the Autumn. I haven't bought anything but underwear from M&S for about 20 years, so something's changed.

ggirl · 06/04/2014 11:00

I think i'll look for something for my 80 yr old mum from the collection

Southeastdweller · 06/04/2014 11:03

A contrived selection of models and an equally contrived choice of poses of some of those models. I've been cringing this week when I've seen the ads. I feel like if I ever see Rita Ora's face one more time I'll jump off the nearest bridge.

I'm male and not into cross-dressing so can't comment on the wearability but the designs are typically frumpy and dull. I doubt my 62 year old DM would be seen dead in any of this crap, let alone any of the models. I'd say to pay everyone involved cost something like £500,000 when they should have spent that money on decent designers. They just never learn.

The only positive thing about the campaign is that I read that Doreen's donated some of her fee to charity.

To paraphrase Liz, when Alek Wek can't make an outfit work, you know there's something badly wrong.

FrugalFashionista · 06/04/2014 11:04

AL shots of late look badly Photoshopped, and unfotunately in M&S context it does not look ironic.

Cannot understand why they cannot go back to plain silk and cotton basics. They should do what Uniqlo are doing, and because they are not, their future looks dim to me.

Oh and maybe Liz was wearing a M&S fitted bra? Wink

K8Middleton · 06/04/2014 11:07

It's just a bit bonkers isn't it? Assuming you can even identify half of them when after looking them up you still go "erm, who?!". Emma Thompson in terrible pastle pink make up, Annie Lennox dressed the same colour as her hair and Rita Ora???!!! I mostly feel sorry for Doreen Lawrence who just looks so awkward. Terrible.
