Please recommend a face cleaning product - 37 year old with combination skin and spots

A few days ago I read a post from someone with similar age and skin problems - the recommendation was not to use anything blue, green, washy or exfoliating - all of which describes what I use now Shock. I meant to try out the recommended products, but now I can't find the thread.

I have spots underneath my mouth, down my temples and on my forehead between the eyebrows. I never had spots as a teenager and am at my wits end! In case this is relevant: I don't use make up, and am allergic to Nivea cream.
I've even started to get spots on my back!

Please help!

Wash using a sensitive cream or rinse off cleanser.
Use benzoyl peroxide on spots but no more than once a day!
Use a light oil free moisturiser.

Your skin sound like mine.

I use balance me face wash

And have just started using #lcat=top&lid=EFFACLAR DUO + lark he-posay effaclar duo plus which was recommended on mn a while ago.

I was using something my gp had prescribed for my spots, but tbh it wasn't really making much difference. I have been using effaclar du plus for about a week now, and it am very impressed so far as to how much brighter and clearer my skin looks.

Good luckSmile

Hot cloth cleansing as described by Sali Hughes. Google her Guardian column on it. I'm 34 and had similar problems with mine, and it's improved out of sight.

BendyBusBuggy · 05/04/2014 18:18

Thanks for the recommendations!
I remember seeing the hot cloth method before - couln't remember where and ended up using a far too hot cloth and took about a 50p large bit skin off my cheeks ... on a business trip too! Not a great look Smile

I'll try all of the above out! Thank you!!

Roche Possay face gel - they do a great range for combi/problematic skin. The gel wash has helped me a great deal.

LRP Effaclar products used quite sparingly (I use K for moisturizing in the morning and AI for blemishes, except I haven't had any for months now Wink). Discontinue scrubs, foaming products, serums, moisturizers and BB creams if you happen to be using them. I wash in the evening with castile soap, used Effaclar gel before but found it too drying for regular daily use. I'm using it up as a body wash now.

Also check that your shampoo or hair conditioner is not causing some of the spots. I get spots from all kinds of natural oils and they are pretty common in hair products these days.

I've also tried exfoliating, foaming products, even hot cloth and oil cleansing and but all of them are bad news for my skin (too drying, irritating, rosacea-triggering and cystic acne inducing). My tricky, sensitive acne and allergy prone skin is in fantastic condition with these simple routines in place.

FrugalFashionista · 05/04/2014 18:26

Oh, and forgot to mention, have used Effaclar for well over a year now and it really is great stuff.

I am similar but found that treating it like sensitive skin helped more - I'm having success with NYR Frankincense cleanser which is almost like the OCM as it contains oils and is very creamy. Has really calmed my skin down.

I also use a hot cloth and the NYR frankincense moisturiser. Sometimes use the Decleor exfoliating toner to make sure I get all my make up off, it's surprising what gets left behind.

Finally, reducing dairy has really helped.

Frugal, which shampoo do you use?

Wella Repair and Volume are my faves (superb supermarket stuff on the continent).

Nivea sensitive micellar water.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 05/04/2014 20:43

It was my thread. Still not found the holy grail but it's only been a week or so!

WholeNutt · 06/04/2014 01:41

Sufferer of 5 years with nodular acne no treatment worked until a dr prescribed hibi scrub. I have been using it daily for 6 or so months and my skin is great. I haven't had to wear foundation for over a month now and even my usual hormonal breakout didn't happen. My routine is this;

AM:
Hibi scrub
Elemis lavender toner
Effaclar Duo

PM
Elemis pro radiance cream cleanser
Hibi scrub
Elemis lavender toner
Effaclar Duo

Twice a week I use the Elemis papaya enzyme and then a mask.

Hope that might help

I was inspired by recent threads to try the LRP effaclar range to try and sort out my recent outbreak of spots (previously managed with Clinique anti-blemish, but hasn't been doing much for this bout of spottiness) and after 2 weeks I'm seeing pretty good results. My skin is that annoying blend of spotty/oily and also sensitive, and the LRP seems to be sorting out the spots without drying or irritating. You can get it for a good price online. Good luck, spots are very demoralising especially when you feel like you should have outgrown them!

DumSpiroSpero · 06/04/2014 09:39

I'm a similar age and my skin tends to more dry but I still get bloody spots and excema in my hairline & eyebrows when stressed.

I keep it as simple as possible - remove make up with baby lotion and cotton wool in the evening, and use the mildest possible face wash in the morning, plus Olay serum & eye treatment.

newgirl · 06/04/2014 09:42

The only thing that worked for me was going back on the pill - skin was perfect. Off it now as can't be on it for long and skin starting to be mixed again. Boooo.

NinetyNinePercentTroll · 06/04/2014 09:46

I love the clinique take the day off cleansing balm. I find anything foaming dries my skin out any, creamy washes don't do much and hot cloth cleansing creams break me out as they are too thick. Balm cleansers work best for me and the clinique one is the best one I've tried.
