Semi permanent ash brown hair dye and HOC winters

Has anyone ever successfully covered grey with this? I am a newly diagnosed HOC winter and have read in my booklet that colouring grey hair, with a semi perm ash brown colour is the best thing to do, but I am sceptical that it would cover anything. I am nervous about permanent colouring in case it goes too black, or too red for my winter coolness

I use permanent ash brown (6.1) majirel and it is a very close match to my natural hair colour. Covers grey completely. Its a tiny bit red in string sunshine but so is my natural hair colour. Start with a shade lighter than you think you need because its easy to go darker than to lighten. I am a HOC Winter too.

Sounds nice maraki. I'm a bit wary of going perm though, am curious to try a semi, I might just go for it, what's the worst that can happen if it only lasts a few weeks!

Currently using l'oreal semi perm light ash brow n after a disastrous experiment with medium ash brown (ridiculously dark). I've bought the permanent version of this now that I'm happy with the colour as it didn't do anything for the grey hairs.

Thanks, it's a shame, I always have visions of semi perm lightly covering my grey, just to give a beautiful highlighted effect. I'm dreaming I think!!

I find ash brown turns out way too dark. You might be better to use one of the castings chocolate tones.

Witchywitch · 03/04/2014 10:28

Really? That's interesting. I don't want it too dark but I've been advised to use ash brown as it's the coolest of the browns, as I don't suit warm tones. It's all very confusing really. Hmmm, what to do...

I use semi permanent light ash brown, as anything medium or dark comes out way too dark. I have used the Nice and Easy semi perm before with good results and I've got a Casting Creme Gloss in Iced mocha, which I've used a few times. It's recommended for blonde/light brown hair and my hair is dark brown, so it just adds shine and covers the grey.

BUT, it doesn't last for the 28 washes it promises and I only have a light sprinkling of grey.

I would avoid using a permanent colour repeatedly as it just builds up on your hair and the grey will still come through eventually.

Anything not "ash", so anything that says warm/golden etc just gives me that awful dyed reddy/ ginger tone.

Witchywitch · 03/04/2014 10:47

Thanks downtown, that's what I'm afraid of, that reddy look which doesn't suit me at all. I have more grey than you but will give the light ash brown a go I think. Nothing to lose really is there, with a semi perm!

I agree with Maraki, but let my hairdresser do all the work.

Witchywitch · 03/04/2014 10:50

I am tempted carrie, but I just can't afford colour at the hairdressers at the mo :-( why is it so expensive?!!

Nice and Easy semi perm in medium ash brown. They have light ash brown which is also cool.

I would also recommend Aveda's Black Malva conditioner for when your hair turns a bit red (this often happens a few weeks after a dye job esp when its been sunny) and this product works by cooling down the red tones.

Witchywitch · 03/04/2014 11:00

Thanks scatter, I'll have a look for those

I like the Loreal Castings but they do come up dark. I use medium brown and it gives me a darkish brown. I don't feel Iced Mocha is that ash? Iced Latte is but grey coverage not fab. Light Brown better grey coverage but actually medium darkness.

Witchywitch · 04/04/2014 08:32

Thanks for all the suggestions x

Nice and Easy medium ash brown covers grey well and no red tones as far as I can see. It is perm. though, do you may want to work up to it.

tackytiger · 04/04/2014 08:55

I've just used Nice and Easy permanent light Ash brown and though it is quite cool toned, it comes up much darker than I expected.

ygritte · 05/04/2014 17:02

Same here tacky....the light ash permanent - (although i was expecting it to be very dark brown.)
I thought it was just me who was imagining a growing redness over the weeks, but think I may get some Aveda to neutralise it.

kimimimi · 05/04/2014 23:39

witchywitch, it does have the peroxide to mix so is not coming off totally. I use Nice n Easy 77 medium ash brown and is still a bit reddish in some light but not much and is the most closest to my natural colour anyway.

and

I do only the roots and the whole every tho months or so, other ways is going to dark from build up, is something to consider.

kimimimi · 05/04/2014 23:41

*two months

Witchywitch · 06/04/2014 08:35

Thanks kim
