There is no way I will look Italian but I don't want to look like an old scruff.
I'm 5ft 8in, good legs, fair skin and freckles.

Any ideas?

(Dark) neutrals, conservative items, no colored skinnies and no spray tan and you'll fit in. Italians are lily white right now, the preppy college girls wear sheer and opaque black tights with moto boots, micro shorts or loose tops and Balenciaga or Falabella bags. More mature women wear all possible types of boots with jeans or skirts. No bare legs. People are slowly transitioning from winter to summer clothes but still preferring winter items.

Lambstales · 31/03/2014 21:20

Thank you. Do you mean knee high still or just ankle boots?

Italian women seem to love chunky boots. Riding boots are not that common unless you are actually going riding, and a cuban heel is deeply passe/ worn by a Texan tourist, but during the winter I've seen lots of quite chunky ankle and calf length boots.

My DD committed a faux pas recently. She put shorts on, in Spain Shock
along with all the other northern hemisphere students! She was getting along quite well till then...Especially as she looks Spanish (just 8" too tall).

Taller than me!

I disagree with Frugal, when in Rome you don't have to dress like Romans. We have a house there and Italian women's style is quite diverse. I would just stick to tasteful, classic clothes, no bare legs, no spray tan, no 'quirky' Boden prints or frumpy florals. Make sure everything is carefully ironed and you'll be fine.

Lambstales · 02/04/2014 22:11

I think that I'll be okay then, as I don't like florals.
Not likely to do bare legs (blue) or bother with a spray tan, they just look so odd. I'm more bothered about burning, yes, even in April.
I can iron clothes to look smart but my hair goes bonkers... how do I tame that?

Twinklestein · 02/04/2014 22:19

It's very sunny there at the mo so you could feasibly burn...

What about a keratin treatment for your hair? It lasts a while...

(There's a lot of wild hair in Italy anyway..)

Lambstales · 02/04/2014 22:36

I've got curly dark grey hair that seems to be getting curlier again.

Sorry, it IS dark brown

I'm dredging this up again because DH has to go next week (shame) and I might tag along.
Have Italians switched to autumn wear?
I'm still very pale (don't tan) will everyone else be really tanned?

Boots or sandals?

We often go to Italy ( Rome, Milan ) and I follow more or less exactly Twinklestein's 'rules ' and feel pretty comfortable ( tho will never look Italian, sadly).

IME, Romans definitely into their autumn uniform , including boots, by now - though I have happily worn sandals when appropriate for walking round Roman archaeological sites, etc.

Lambstales · 26/09/2014 18:28

Thank you Polyhymnia, very useful to know. The silly thing is that I haven't packed my summer clothing away as it's still so warm here.
I've decided not to mix and mash! so will be packing autumn clothing and layering. It will also reduce the weight of my case Grin
