Cherie Blair - what not to wear to a funeral

Here
I was quite shocked to see the picture of Cherie Blair at Tony Benn's funeral. Why did she decide to wear a short skirt with very noticable turned up hem, white (or very plae) tights and shoes that looked painful. Most of the other pictures oare of women displaying quiet and sober elegance. CB is fabulously wealthy, surely she could have found something in her wardrobe ( bearing in mind she must have tons of black suits for work) to wear?

The outfit itself isn't that unusual for a funeral, it is essentially a black suit but I agree it's dreadful. Really unflattering and like you say, what's with that hem? The tights do nothing for her legs at all. I expect the whole thing cost a fortune, which just goes to show.....It must have been her stylist's day off!

Frightful!

The skirt looks extremely cheap and NO ONE suits white tights. But then Mrs 'letterbox mouth' is never gonna look good, is she???

ListenToTheLady · 28/03/2014 10:15

She must have had a last-minute wardrobe disaster. Hotel breakfast coffee all over her smart knee-length skirt and black tights. You can see the skirt is not the same fabric as the jacket so not part of the suit. I think she looks good from the waist up.

It looks like he had a great turn-out. Poor Margaret Beckett! I feel bad for looking after seeing that photo.

CommanderShepard · 29/03/2014 19:23

She looks like she's wearing TEDs!

MargotLovedTom · 29/03/2014 19:26

There's a long thread going about this in chat I think, it's a bit heated Grin.

Shallishanti · 29/03/2014 19:31

Maybe she had more important things on her mind than how she would look in the photos
She is dressed conventionally smart, can't think why it merits comment.

JohnCusacksWife · 29/03/2014 19:36

Agree its not the best look but why the need to sneer and point out another woman's fashion failings? Do you think a man would ever post on an internet forum about another man's shabby suit or too tight waistband etc?? No - because they don't judge each other based on looks.

Sometimes women are their own worst enemy.

PPPpickUPaPenguin · 29/03/2014 19:41

The hem length and tights do nothing for her Sad

onedev · 29/03/2014 19:42

I'm amazed all these people actually give a shit - who cares??

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 29/03/2014 19:44

Cherie looks dreadful. Be nice for her if she had learned to dress well - would save her so much criticism. Every time I see her I do, however, think how extraordinary and fantastic it is that she grew up on a council estate and went on to become a leading barrister.

Natasha Kaplinksi looks superb.

Brillenbar · 29/03/2014 19:48

And look at peter tatchel in his red trousers. Yes her legs don't look fab but ffs it's a funeral of a well loved conviction politician not a fashion show

SimLondon · 29/03/2014 20:17

Im shocked at the pettiness here - Cherie Blair is one of the brightest legal minds in the country she's a judge and fights in the European court for things like gay rights and she wore a slightly unflattering pair of tights? WTF - why not say something nice about her top?

TheArticFunky · 29/03/2014 20:21

Agree with onedev.

Why don't you post pictures of what you were wearing today and I'll pick holes in your appearance.

BuggersMuddle · 29/03/2014 20:42

SimLondon I've met Cherie Blair and didn't exactly warm to her.

She is dressed dreadfully in that photo. There are plenty of people who are not blessed in the looks department, or who are overweight who can still dress well. The key thing though for a funeral is being conservative. A slinky skirt 3" above the knee might pass on someone very slim or very young, but she is neither of those and should know better.

I could never take to her, but I had a summer job while at university in a canteen / restaurant. Cherie pitched up, and stood 10ft in front of me while asking her handlers 'What's best? Should I shake hands with these people?'. On receipt of the affirmative, she shook hands with me with a sneer on her face and a wet handshake as though shaking hands with the lowest of the low. She didn't speak at all. I can't claim to be as successful (although I am successful), but I was appalled on behalf of my permanent colleagues at the time who were so glad she gave them the time of day. Anyway - didn't like her before, don't like her now. As a lawyer she's good no doubt, but a cold fish.

BuggersMuddle · 29/03/2014 20:45

To be fair though, Sally Bercow (who has far better legs than me) out to also check her wardrobe. Might be fine for a dinner, but while her legs are great, I think it's a bit inappropriate for a funeral given her age and position.

(To be honest age is a bit of a sidetrack. I wore knee length or below the knee for funerals in my teens and I had a fantastic figure, as most teens do).
