So... what does one wear for a 'date'???

This feels slightly tragic. I'm 33, and haven't been on a date in a decade (I've been married... husband has left... I think I'm ready to start trying again). I haven't thought about this stuff for a long time. I live in work clothes and normal kicking around with the kids stuff (jeans).

While I know this first date may be a disaster for so many other reasons, I want to at least feel like I got it right clothing-wise!

Can anyone suggest something which says 'attractive, subtle undertones of sexiness, but not trying too hard'...???

Wear what you usually wear, be yourself. If you get all dressed up and he's a casual sort he may feel that you don't have much in common.

It depends where your date is, but I usually wore skinny jeans, boots and a nice top. For a general daytime dinner or drinks date somewhere casual, don't overdo it or you might come across as a bit try-hard.

Fwiw, my now DP took cues from my profile, wearing things I'd said I liked, including stubble and a non-branded shirt, as I said I wasn't into designer clothes etc. turns out most of his clothes are branded (not designer, but a definite step up from my supermarket clothes!) so the image he portrayed on the first date wasn't really him!

Has your date mentioned anything specific about the sort of style he likes?

I would agree on wearing the sort of thing you usually wear, but super flattering so that you feel good on the date.

Personally I very rarely wear dresses so wouldn't wear one for a date unless it was a black tie ball! I would wear nicely cut jeans with a flattering top, but then I do generally dress in jeans.

Just make sure you feel comfortable in whatever you wear.

Enjoy it!

I'm with cafecito. I originally had something like this in mind, only a bit shorter, above knee.

In the end you must go with what you feel most comfortable with. And we have all tried on several outfits before going with the one we naturally gravitated to in the first place!
