If you have acne what makeup do you wear? And do you recommend it?

I've got acne, had it since I was 12 . I've seen various acne threads on MN so I know there are fellow sufferers out there.

All the threads I've seen focus on remedies. However perhaps we can have one about the more short term solution of make up? It can be difficult trying to find make up that works with spots so thought we could share any recommendations/ones to avoid.

I am currently using:

  • Garnier BB Cream for Normal/Oily skin.

This is ok but I'm looking for an alternative. It is not too oily (a problem with lots of BB creams) and doesn't seem to make my skin worse, but it's a little too orange for me especially in winter. I really really like the Loreal BB but it makes me break out after a few days Sad.

  • Mac Select Moisturecover.

I love this concealer, it's really liquid and creamy so no cakiness whatsoever, but you can build it up to get good coverage. Also a huge range of colours. Really recommend it.

  • Estee Lauder Doublewear Light (only for special occasions)

Good coverage without being too heavy. I don't like the full weight version but the light is perfect. Still too heavy for every day use though (for me at least).

Looking forward to your thoughts...

Neutrogena skin clearing foundation is quite hard to get in the UK now but it broke the cycle of my acne.

Hmmm I think I need some of that veil stuff too Sunday!

The website do sample kits so you can get your colour right, I'll send for one.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/03/2014 13:22

Drew - how do you apply it?

I have rocasea, Revlon colour stay s a new discovery but I need a tiny bit more coverage on the cheeks and I think this might work. Concealers are a bit crap ime and not up to the job, Bare minerals is best of a bad bunch.

DrewsWife · 19/03/2014 13:29

Go to their fb page. Veil cover creme. You will see my before an after photo. I'm on my phone and can't link or add in photos.

Take a small amount pop it onto the back of your hand and dab gently with your fingers. I can do it in under ten minutes now and it's flawless. Sometimes I rush it if I'm not too worried.

Use your fingers not a sponge. And pat on it blends using the heat of your fingers.

Oh shame, Im not on fb Sad

SundaySimmons · 19/03/2014 13:33

DrewsWife, I think you are the beautiful bride? You do indeed look beautiful.

I am going to order a sample kit, it looks marvellous.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/03/2014 13:34

We'll compare results Sunday Grin

DrewsWife · 19/03/2014 13:36

I am indeed. I scrub up well. The picture just one or two down is me before and after the week before x

Cocolepew · 19/03/2014 13:41

here is a link to the website is it drying?

fluffygal · 19/03/2014 13:50

Just ordered myself a colour matching kit- looking forward to receiving this! Currently use Estee Lauder doublewear foundation with Benefit boing concealer and really like it but would love to find something perfect for covering acne scars.

DrewsWife · 19/03/2014 13:57

I don't find it drying at all. I use a layer of moisturiser. My skin is super dry. Don't use oily moisturiser or oil based creme.

Cocolepew · 19/03/2014 14:31

Ok, thanks!

Plateofcrumbs · 19/03/2014 17:38

minipie - obviously everyone is different but I found the BB cream I was using (high street brand, L'Oreal I think?) was dreadful for bringing me out in spots. I used it for a while (sometimes you don't realise cause and effect immediately) thinking that it would be lighter and therefore less problematic than a proper foundation, but it gave me some of the worst breakouts I've had in years.

minipie · 20/03/2014 10:39

Plate I found exactly the same with the Loreal BB! (see my OP). It's weird. God knows what they put in it. Silicon maybe?

However the Garnier BB in normal/oily doesn't seem to have the same effect. I also used the Dermalogica tinted moisturiser for a while and that didn't bring me So I was hoping there might be other BB creams out there that are ok... (since the Garnier one is a bit orange and the Dermalogica doesn't give much coverage at all).

Sorry minipie didn't read the OP properly! Actually just looked it up and it's the garnier one that screws up my skin. I've not tried the l'oreal one.

minipie · 22/03/2014 13:25

oh interesting. Maybe the garnier one is not helping my skin either, although not as bad as the loreal one... Must dig out lily lolo stuff.

I got my veil sample kit.
A huge range of shades. None really matched but the closest was beige and possibly Medium for paler areas of my face.
I went for light to medium kit and the samples went from white to very dark.
I may buy two and then blend them. I haven't tried the powder. Nice texture foundation but dries very quickly so would have to blend/apply quickly to get a natural look.

hedwig2001 · 22/03/2014 19:55

Minipie, I used a similar cleansing routine until January. I switched to Superdrug Natural Radiance hot cloth cleanser. I have seen a massive improvement. Worth a try!
I have found the Boots 17 BB cream to be excellent. Recommended on Mumsnet.

minipie · 22/03/2014 20:38

thanks hedwig - those sound right up my street - will have a look.
