I've got naturally mousy hair with the faintest hint of auburn in it. I'm quite pale-with yellow rather then red skin. I usually have highlights, but mine are currently a year old so I'll probably get them chopped off

I've always wanted to dye my hair red, and now I'm on maternity leave it seems like the ideal time to try it.

I'd love advice on what might work. I'm totally relaxed about what type of red, except I'd like it to look natural. I tempted to start with a dark auburn, or a strawberry blonde.

Are there any good home dye kits, or should I get it done at a salon?

I was thinking of trying some of Lush's henna maybe....

As someone with pale/yellow skin, I'd steer we'll clear of anything with 'auburn' in the title. Been there, and it never looked good. What really worked was that very dark red like Cheryl cole had, but it's not very natural! Looked great though.

I've dyed my hair red a lot in the past and love the lush hennas as they give a really natural red colour. They're messy though, and a pain in the bum to use, but totally worth it for the end colour.

I've got naturally mid to dark brown hair and used to use their caca rouge, but would leave it on for over four hours to get a good strong red from it. If you've got lighter hair then it wouldn't take as long to get a good red from the same product.

I can't recommend what shade of red you should go for, but a word of warning about the henna is it's not easily reversible, so if you're not keen on the colour, you're stuck with it... So it's a big risk!

If you do decide to try the lush henna, definitely do a strand test first to figure out how long you need to leave it on for to get the colour you want, oh and when you mix up the henna, make sure not to use anything metal at all - if you do you'll end up with a fetching green shade...

Good luck!
